From Cádiz to Almería, passing through Córdoba, Seville and Granada, we take you through the workshops of 5 of the best active Flamenco guitarists / luthiers in Andalusia, Spain.
    00:00 INTRO
    00:14 VALERIANO BERNAL FLAMENCO GUITARS
    Region: Cadiz | Andalusia
    Web: www.guitarrasvalerianobernal.com
Contact: Rafael Bernal (Son and also luthier)
The most prestigious spanish guitarists of the past and present of flamenco have played with their guitars. Father of three children, his legacy continues in the figure of his son Rafael Bernal Gil - "Rafa de Valeriano" -, the only one in his family who follows the trade of making guitars. In fact, he published a new harmonic bar system based on his father's work, called the Valerian system (see: es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valeria...)
07:10 JUAN MIGUEL GONZÁLEZ FLAMENCO GUITARS
    Region: Andalusia | Almeria
    Web: www.juanmiguelgonzalez.com
    Contact: Juan Miguel González
Miguel González, Juan Miguel's father, began to build guitars in 1935 and was a contemporary of the Moya Brothers, andalusian guitar makers from Almería who learned the trade from Antonio de Torres, allowing his undeniable mastery to lay the foundations of a solid guitar tradition in Almería.
The relay of this tradition is collected by his son Juan Miguel González, who began at a very young age in this vocational craft of artisans in his father's workshop, thus introducing himself into the exciting world of the construction of the Spanish guitar and expanding the artisan legacy of his parent. His work masterfully combines craftsmanship, innovation, technique, research, dedication and a lot of passion.
The noble materials used by Juan Miguel González for the construction of his guitars, carefully selected and with a high acoustic potential, have an exceptional quality. Much of these materials belonged to his father's original workshop, and they have benefited from a careful and careful controlled aging process to now have wood of the highest quality.
    10:38 GRACILIANO PÉREZ FLAMENCO GUITARS
    Region: Andalusia | Cordoba
    Web: www.gracilianoperez.com/
    Contact: Graciliano Pérez
In his workshop, the highest sound quality spanish flamenco guitars are built for high-level guitarists and great flamenco figures. He currently works with his brother José, who with great skill and knowledge has put into practice everything that his brother Graciliano has taught him, becoming over the years an indispensable craftsman for the workshop.
By having a purely artisanal limited production, using techniques such as working with “solera”, for example, since they are open to making the modifications that their clients request, delivery times are several months, but they are convinced that the wait will be rewarded. when the guitarist has the custom guitar in his hands.
12:21 FRANCISCO SANTIAGO MARÍN FLAMENCO GUITARS
    "PACO MARÍN"
    Region: Andalusia | Granada
    Web: pacosantiagomarin.es/
    Contact: Paco Marín
He comes from a family of guitar makers and flamenco luthiers, and has been building guitars since 1965. He has loved wood since he was a child. His father, Francisco Santiago Oliva, a cabinet maker by vocation, instructed him in the trade and with him he remained in the carpentry until 1963, the year in which he entered the workshop of his uncle, Antonio Marín Montero, to complete his training as a guitar maker.
His guitars stand out for their great projection, balance and sound color, which is why they have been preferred by great international masters of this instrument. Paco builds his guitars completely by hand using traditional methods and designs.
For Paco, the basis of the Granada school are the guitars of Antonio de Torres, however he has never stopped researching and developing their construction. He is not a fan of modern materials and new techniques although they can give more power to the guitar, at the cost of the quality of the tone, but prefers to stay true to the acoustic tradition and nobility of the woods themselves.
    13:52 FRANCISCO BARBA FLAMENCO GUITARS
    Region: Andalusia | Seville
    Web: franciscobarba.net
    Contact: Francisco Barba
Francisco Barba's professional career begins in the 60s of the last century. He learned the trade of carpentry from his father, although at the age of 17 he decided on a self-taught way to specialize in the construction of guitars in the same house where he now has his workshop.
He is considered one of the best guitar makers of all time and his guitars have been (and are) praised and used by some of the best guitarists in the world.
At present, his sons pick up his tradition as a guitar maker and continue to make the wonderful guitars that are so well received by stars and flamenco fans.

I had the pleasure of meeting Valeriano when I was in Arcos about 2002 and, being a pro guitar player, I met a few flamenco guys and was overawed by their playing. They all said go to Bernal's taller in Algodonales and buy the basic Prodigio model - he opened up especially on a Sunday and then we all went back to his fantasic house on the hill at Olvera for wine & snacks, he was very funny and I treasure the memory. I learnt to play flamenco a little and bought two more of his guitars from his son. Thanks for posting, I'm very fond of the Spanish people and especially Andalucia.

I've had 2 of Barba's guitars a 2002 and 2003 both blancas and a 2014 Graciliano negra cedar top/brazilian. 3 of the best guitars I've had the pleasure of owning and recording in the studio with. Great video. Thanks for giving the smaller shops in Andalucia the exposure they deserve.

Wonderful video! I would love to know who is playing the music in the background. I tried to use my phone app to identify the artist(s) but was unsuccessful. If you could provide that info it would be awesome. 😀

Hi there! I would love to be able to help you, but most Andalusian flamenco music is spontaneous, that is, there are very few studio recordings, since they are made in tablaos, local festivals and competitions, and corresponding festivities. Let's hope that the Flamenco sound library grows far beyond the great masters with new composers and guitarists who cross our borders. Greetings!

De Andalucía. Faltaría por poner para mi gusto a Antonio Marin Montero y Manuel Bellido.

    • @ZilaChannel
      @ZilaChannel  3 года назад +2

Hi Pedro! Antonio Marín Montero was born in 1933 and is not building guitars anymore by himself (actually, I don´t know if he's still alive). His nephews are the ones building guitars now. Same thing for Manuel Bellido, he was born in 1939 and is not working anymore. Jesús and Mauricio Bellido are the ones building guitars now for the Manuel Bellido workshop, and by the moment, are not on the 5 Top Andalusian Flamenco Guitar Luthiers List, although they are on the Top 10 :-)

Hello! I appreciate your comment, and although the workshops you mention are excellent, my video is about the 5 best ACTIVE ANDALUSIAN flamenco guitar luthiers. The Conde brothers are in Madrid, and Manuel Reyes died and his workshop has been closed for years without any successor to continue his work. Best regards!

@@ZilaChannel well that's true but anyways manuel Reyes son is still doing guitars and they are the same as his father since he started doing them with him over twenty years ago, and Felipe and Mariano conde are still doing very good things in Madrid. Hope this adds to the info here 😁

@@oscarriestra68 Hi Oscar! Manuel Reyes Sr. was a genius in the construction of flamenco guitars. The luthiers that I mention in my video are also great artists and highly renowned artisans. I have no references about Manuel Reyes Jr.'s guitars since his father died, but I found the address and contact phone number (I hope it's current). I leave the link here in case someone is interested: www.andalucia.org/es/cordoba-ocio-y-diversion-compras-manuel-reyes.
As for the Hermanos Conde workshop, as I mentioned before, they are from Madrid since its inception, when Domingo Esteso founded it. The workshop is still active thanks to a branch of the family after the dissolution of the partnership between the successor brothers. If I find any other information of interest, I will not hesitate to include it. My intention with this video is to promote, within my limited possibilities, a sector that has been seriously affected by the current situation, almost totally dependent on exports and with losses of more than 80%. Thank you very much again for your interest and I am here for any questions or requests that arise. All the best and don't stray too far, because I'm sure you'll like the video I'm preparing next ;-)

@@ZilaChannel Manuel Raimundu? I s he not eligible? (I'm a UK player... Forgive me if I'm being ignorant) - But I felt certain that he builds with a 100% Andalusian philosophy. Workshop in Valencia... I don't know which region that is...

@@blacktoothfox677 Hi there! Manuel Raimundo is a great Spanish guitar luthier, but he is from Valencia (Spain's East Coast) not from Andalusia (South Spain), and my video is about the Best Andalusian Flamenco Guitar Luthiers. Flamenco was born in Andalusia. There's a huge difference between Spanish guitar and, specifically Flamenco guitar. Even though Manuel builds fantastic Spanish acoustic guitars, there are better luthiers from the classic flamenco school. I leave here Manuel's website, which is also in English, so anybody can access his workshop. Best regards and thanks for playing our music and traditions! PD: If there's anyone here with doubts or difficulties finding luthiers or specific workshops, don´t hesitate to ask! I'll be glad to help! guitarrasraimundo.com/en/

Francisco Manuel Diaz .... his children, Victor and Francisco, Jesus de jimenez, Andrés domínguez, Peña Vargas etc etc .... your list has neither head nor tail. Who says which guitar player is better or worse? Does Valeriano make better guitars than Jesus de Jimenez? You should change the title and put as well as: "my list of the best Andalusian guitar players"
lutheria is an art, not a competition, the guitars speak, and what fascinates one guitarist, may not be good for another...
