How often are you barefoot? It may come as a surprise but most modern shoes made today are HORRIBLE for you feet. If you care about optimizing every aspect of your health & body - you NEED to also care about what shoes you put on your feet. This means ditching shoes from major shoe brands that don’t let your feet function optimally.

Wear Vibram shoes (furoshiki and 5 fingers trail) since almost two years for daily life, gym and travel. With Yoga practice aside, i'm feeling progressively more grounded and straightened, especially at the level of the big toes, calf arch, hamstring (front bend as Uttanasana helps for this). Futhermore i've noticed a better motricity with my barefoot run on sand. It's feeling like being in 5x5. Before that it was a more "propulsed feeling" by each foot.
Finally, shoes appears to me as a contextualizing tool for protecting the skin from the danger of the environment but it's not substitute the Natural feeling that we experience with soil contact or tree (temperature, humidity, grip). At the end, shoes inhibit the transfer of data from the outside to the nervous sytem and at the other hand its put a stop to the electrical discharing that we gather from microwaves (phone, wifi, blutooth etc.) and which can it normally drain off to the ground.
      Anyway, hope to be usefull
Have a good walk and long life all
      Thanks for video

At home: Barefoot all the time unless it’s frigid and then I’ll wear some wide, goofy house slippers.
At the gym: Never, but I use Luna Sandals or Xero shoes, which are fairly minimal. Unless I’m at a gym with a pool, I’m not barefoot for any length of time. Not worth the ringworm for me.
Playing softball: Never. I’m still on the hunt for cleats that don’t make my whole legs/back hurt.
Circus classes: Barefoot or socked all the time. Need those grippers out to hold onto the lyra.
Kettlebell and pull up bar at home: Barefoot. I don’t even bother getting out of my pajamas first.
    Fishing: Crocs all day, unrepentantly.

What happened about 4 months ago?
Something must have changed, recalling events running up to the day you first noticed the pain may point you in the right direction.
Interestingly, injuries and or illness involving the spine can cause acute pain just about anywhere through a process called referred pain. So I wonder what happened prior to the pain manifesting. It may be worth checking out a chiropractor. Just make sure they are registered with the correct governing bodies in your country, and that their qualifications are also recognised. A good chiropractor or osteopath can give a more holistic diagnosis.
I agree with this chap that orthotics often just support the weakness instead of helping strengthen the weakened muscles.
I also appreciate that many like to go barefoot. Personally, I wouldn't recommend this except indoors, or areas like grass when camping etc.
The diseases on our streets are awful. And pick up on our feet with ease. Just think of how many dogs have fouled the area, how many drunks have vomited on the pavement. How many people spit, and also spit out their chewing gum.
You don't know where other people have walked in their boots. How many have stepped on poo and traipsed it wherever they went. It's not visible, but the contaminant filth will still be on your skin. And your skin is the biggest organ of our body, and will absorb ,into the bloodstream, whatever your bare feet are exposed to. Just a thought, but my personal experience with osteopathic and chiropractic treatment has been overwhelmingly positive.
      Hope this helps.🖖

@@merin5230 Hi Merin, Thank you for your considered response. I should clarify, my definition of "always barefoot" isn't entirely accurate and is probably exaggerated, but i only wear footwear when necessary such as running, cycling, hiking etc. I'm not a hobbit per se but for the majority of the time i am barefoot around the house or i'm wearing thongs (flip-flops) and have done so for many years. The circumstances leading up to the development of PF were no different to usual. no new shoes for at least 3 months for example. I actually monitor the usage of my shoes i do wear through Strava, and i only wear quality shoes that are not worn out. I did have a pars defect 15 years ago, but i have overcome the problems associated with that and until these symptoms commenced i was running on average 40km a week and cycling 200km a week for over a 6 year period. i've recently explored the idea of it being caused from hip tightness, but that has been to no avail. I don't really think my hips are that tight; i have good range of motion and squat "arse to grass" comfortably. I think i'll reach out to a physiotherapist now.

    • @timonix2
      @timonix2 3 месяца назад +2

For short duration, high impact sports a narrow footbox can help direct force towards your big toe. Useful for quick turns at high speeds.
For longer duration sports like marathons, or sports with more controlled movements like weight lifting a wider toe box generally gives better performance. Better balance and more comfort.
Some specialized sports like climbing don't only have a narrow footbox. They literally force the foot into an arch. As well as crimping down the toes forcing them into a kind of toe fist.
Sports have different needs than regular day activities. But for someone with an extreme pair of sports shoes its even more important to have wide shoes for their every day life for long term health

Owning horses was a sign of wealth and so people started wearing those shoes to look like they had wealth, it’s became a fashion statement and over time the societal norm/blueprint for shoes. Similarly high heels were originally for men, to appear taller. History has the answer to most questions

I try to spend as much time barefoot as possible! And I never wear shoes when I lift. I even walk on my treadmill barefoot. If I run I do put on shoes for the cushion.

I went to a podiatrist to check out an ingrown callus and the first thing she did was sell me orthotic insoles with arches. She was pissed when I questioned that, so I just went along and now have a $50 pair of inserts sitting in the shoe rack that I wear if I ever go back. I hate wearing shoes unless they are wide toe box and minimalist.

I was always told to leave space for my thumb on the sole in front of my big toe. That way the narrow front of shoes doesn't affect the foot.

Been walking barefoot at any possible moment my whole life, my mom bought me only wide toe shoes. I'm 24, with severe fallen arches and other problems including in-turned toe. I visited several specialists, all of them forbid me to walk barefoot if I want to walk without pain in couple of decades 😕

Barefoot as much as I can at the house. I feel like I have the opposite problem where I have huge arches and it's difficult for me to properly pronate. Also, right big toe is more compressed compared to left side. Broke that toe and foot years ago. Any tips to address? Thanks!

I have a bad bunion on my right foot. It badly affects my balance. I also have high arches on top of that. I wear barefoot shoes when I work out and wide boots at work and try to go without shoes as much as I can. My bunion hurts a lot of the time and all of the bunion fixing tools I've tried do nothing. I'll probably need to have surgery but man I really don't want to..

Holy crap....I JUST realized I have bunions on my big toes! My arch likes to collapse. I'm also overweight and exercise a lot. I wear flip flops around the house because otherwise my feet hurt. What shoes should I wear at the gym?

  • @merin5230
    @merin5230 3 месяца назад

I disagree with the business of the cause of the bunion. Ive never worn those tight pointy shoes. I do have a bunion. One. On my roght foot, whicch has a fine arch. Actually, higher than most. My left foot has the same high arch, but no bunion at all.
Genetics are the most likely reasons for bunions. And tight, restrictive shoes will of course make it worse.
Some people are born with flat feet. The inward roll of the foot, pronation, will cause knee and hip problems over time, and pronation, which looks like the ankles are rolled in, WILL cause the right pressure in the wrong place to cause bunions.
Its always worth checking with a podiatrist(foot specialist), chiropractor or osteopath for a second or third opinion
The fact that the patient was recommended an orthotic by a chiropractor indivates the chiropractor in question either isnt any good or possibly not really a chiropractor.
The support is auch an old fashioned outdated therapy, I'm amazed it was recommended.
A quick skip through google will give better advice than that.
Also, shoes are not the usual cause of bunions unless you wear them so tight its uncomfortable. Genetics are more likely.
Andnas a parting thought, i only go barefoot where i KNOW the ground isnt subject ro dog poo, spitting, spit out chewing gum, vomit,(outside pubs and clubs). I never go barefoot on beaches wither, unless i know the beach well. If you look down, just see how many sharp bits of glass from broken booze bottles, how many discarded syringes, condoms, dog poo, you name it, its there. Eew.
