You, sir, are a blessing to us all - in your humor and in the way you share your accumulated knowledge. Thanks for sharing your history and so much more. Whoooo Buddy!
Shug, Thanks for Clowning around for all these years. You are a REAL entertainer ! From juggling to eating caned meat or telling us who to hang a hammock.
Thanks for the hike down history lane Shugitty. Clownin' is in your blood, and you don't need no transfusion. We like you just the way you are. Birds Legs out and a great big Slainte comin' at ya!
It all makes perfect sense now! I have watched may of Shug's backpacking videos and could not help but think that this guy natural performer and was left wandering what his background was. I have had the pleasure of working with people who work their art on a stage. The good ones have a certain je ne sais quo, and that quality was immediately obvious in this man. Thank you for your work!
Those crazy days shaped our lives. As I get older I think back on those times more and more. Loved seeing you at the CC Reunion. Having you in the alley was a great part of my whole experience. We never know how good we have it when we are in it~~
Now there is a life not many people have had. Great stuff Shug! Very interesting. I'm glad you have shared some of your gigs with us too from fairs and what not.
This Video said a lot about who you are. You are one amazing person that can make anyone smile. That's a gift morre people should have. Thank you for the link you sent to me. Have a good day
Shug, Been watching your videos with my 4 and 5 year old girls... Really put a smile on their face. They only stopped watching so they could dance to the background music. Thank you for sharing!
I generally watch your camping videos, and there were two things that always stood out to me. One, that you are incredibly comedic. Two, that you are extraordinarily good at juggling. After seeing this video for the first time, the pieces of the puzzle finally fit. I always use to think "Shug missed his true calling as a performer" lol 😂. Thanks for sharing your story with us all, its really remarkable. It would definitely would make a great book/film.
Jim Vogelgesang! Now there's a memory. He and I were in the same grade in school and then were college room mates. I remember well the evening he showed me his application to Clown College. I knew he was gold when I read it. Love your videos, Shug.
It takes a lot of courage for people to be and enjoy themselves. I am glad you are able to do that, and share that goofey side with us. My life isn't boring, infact it is very busy. The short time that I watch your Vids, I find you are a welcome distraction from the seriousness of life and a reminder to laugh and have fun. Thanks for sharing the fun. Many blessings to you and yours.
I have been watching your backpacking videos for awhile now..I always knew you were into clown performances. It was so great to watch your performances. I hope 2021 finds you well best wishes to you and your.
Just found out the Greatest Show on Earth is coming to an end. I enjoyed seeing the circus come to town when I was a kid in Eastern North Carolina, and it saddens me that future generations of kids will not experience the same sense of wonderment that so many others have over the last 146 years. Sadder still is knowing that there are a lot of great entertainers like you that are going to be out of work, and I pray that every last one of them will find the opportunity to continue bringing smiles to peoples' faces, young and old alike, just like you do Shug.
I'm a huge fan! you make my days great, and I love all of your vids on the outdoors cooking biz. thank you. my favorite clown. I wish I could afford your entertainment. fantastic!!!
Sitting here in soaking up some of that southern Arkansas morning sunshine, sipping coffee, and enjoying your Vids Shug! The quality of your gear reviews accompanied by your entertaining humor is "solid gold" in my book.!
Thanks for sharing Shug. It's so interesting as we dont see much about clowns behind the scenes and their progression to becoming the artists they are. I bet it's a ton of work and practice.
It's funny, I started watching your videos late last year, knew you were an entertainer, didn't register that you were with Ringling until today. 12/2 was my fifth month with Ringlings Red Unit as an electrician. It's amazing to see what has changed, and what has stayed the same. Thanks for an amazing look into the history of a tradition myself and others are trying to preserve today. Keep 'em laughing!
+psychoatberea I sure has changed! No elephants now. Infatable ring curbs. No embassy backstage. Video screens. They were the best days of my life in retrospect. I loved getting to know Irving Feld. Keep it alive I say. I thankee.
Thats cool that you are from Charlotte. I was born and raised in Pisgah Forest, NC. I have been watching your videos for a few weeks on hammock camping. Thank you for all the great videos!
Hi, Sean! Loved this video! Haven't seen a lot of the pictures! Gosh, 37 years ago; thanks for posting this! I've been going through my own circus memories since I went to Baraboo last summer for the reunion, had a great time! Kathleen Herb (Red Show clown, 75-81).
WoW!....now there is a voice from my past. Hope your well and I do think of you in my memories of my first year on the road. Wish I had gone to Baraboo for the reunion but I did go to the one in Orlando. Even Skeeter came. Here are my pix from that...flic.kr/s/aHsm91wjdo Hope to see you someday!
Thanks so much! I loved the pictures; lots of people I remember with great affection but haven't seen in years and years. Somehow I didn't hear about the reunion, because since I'm retired, (high school teacher) I could actually have gone! Hope to see you someday as well!
There's a song that says "Thats a Life you can hang your hat on", first thing I thought of when I saw this. Love this along with your hammock vids, prepping for my first backpacking hammock camping outing with my son. Thanks for all the help!
Brilliant... Always wanted to be a clown when I was a kid and Charlie Carolie was my idol, who was a clown in Blackpool Tower Circus in Lancashire, UK. Loved the video clips and photos. And YES, it explains why you are who you are on your hammock videos... Thanks for sharing...
Very cool, thanks for sharing! You're a great performer. You're a great clown. I probably saw you during your time at Ringling Brothers when I was a kid, but your Karl Childers is what really gets me every time. Love it. Mm hmm. Whooo buddy.
Amazing Shug ! Ive watched your trekking videos but had no idea about your history as a circus clown and juggler, even though there were plenty of clues ! I love watching jugglers, its mezmerizing.
Spot on big fella. Gobsmacked I am. You are the main man. Great pics of Minnesota - great country. And a grand life as a clown. Best Wishes from Scotland. Fast Eddie
That was just awesome! I just got done reading Water for Elephants. I thought it was a great book about circus life. I have always wanted to run off with the circus. I am now pursuing a career being a magician. Not quite the circus, but I get to make people happy and be close to home with my family. Thank you for sharing this. I would like to see more clowning and circus videos.
Obvious from your videos on backpacking and hammocking you are a HUGE talent - thanks for letting us know how you developed it. Wish more people were like you!
Great video, as usual, Shug. Thanks for introducing us to the world of clowns. I could tell these photos mean a lot to you. Thanks for sharing them with us.
It's not often (ever actually) that I want to sit through a "slide show", but you Mr Emery, sir are the exception! Thanks so much for sharing such a big part of your life! Very cool!
Aw Shuge! You're awesome! Now I can see where the antics are coming from. You're entertaining and educating all us folks here in RUclipsland. I tell you what, it's a lot of fun to watch your videos and learning all those fun things about hammocks and hammock camping. Keep them coming! Regards from a Tah heel in Gee-ahjah.
Nice video Shug! My uncle used to live in Charlotte after retiring from being a traveling magician. He kept a ranch for retired showbiz chimpanzees there for a while. I really enjoy learning about you. You are very entertaining, and always brighten up my day sir. 😊
Thanks Shug a great bit of history and the article was so well written. Not at all like the rot you read today. It had everything, hometown, history, human interest, all the w's and intelligent and thoughtful writing but most of all YOU good buddy.LOL
Hey, Shug! I just found this video after watching a lot of your hammock videos. I've been blessed to meet and become friends with a number of Ringling clowns through the year. Pricilla Mooseburger, Frosty Little, Chuck Sidlow to mention a few of the old-timers. It's great to see the skills you've learned. I've just recently retired from using a clown character to teach kids life and fire safety for my local fire department. Take care and keep up the great videos!
A good friend of mine was a Ringling clown, funny most of my friends are jugglers, clowns, and stage performers. I wonder if that's why I enjoy these videos so much. lol. Good stuff, I'm binge watching your camping videos for Christmas
***** I worked ren faire in California and Nevada for a long time, so I met a lot of performers (serious about the craft and otherwise) there, and many are still dear friends
I have been super interested in the idea of hammock camping lately, so I have been making my way through a bunch of your videos. I saw one where you were balancing a ladder and one where you did a perfect flip. Mix that with the humor and I said to myself, "he has got to have a circus background. This guy has been in front of a crowd. He's too charismatic to never have been in front of a crowd." Today this video popped up on my feed. I actually shouted, "I knew it!" I have fond memories of the clowns of Ringling Bros. I enjoy your videos very much.
just happened upon this and think its awesome. thanks for sharing, say what you will as a backpacker and hamocker, I have great respect for you and have learned many tricks from shug of the third person. hope you keep up with posting vids
Shug, you're an amazing dude, man!! A clown's shoes are some of the biggest ones to fill, but you fit them snug Shug!! I remember going to the circus, when I was a child, and being awed by gents like your self. Just think of how many people you made laugh? That in its self must be the best feeling in the world. Keep on makin us smile Shug!! :)
well that explains everything ;-) (not that your videos gave it away or something) Shug, I loved this video very much. There is a lot of heart packed in every minute of this flick. Thank You.
Oh wow! If you ever came to Atlanta, I probably saw you! I was a kid then, and we went to see Ringling Bros. every year. My mom was a huge Gunther Gebel-Williams fan. Red show, blue show, my grandparents bought us all tickets, even though they didn't always go. (We were envied a bit for this-few poor kids had anyone in the family who could afford circus tickets!) Thanks for the memories!
I remember going to the circus when i was 14. It was my first. I met a clown who I followed around most the show. I dont remember anything else much from the circus but those clowns. I asked him how i could become one and eventually he brought me a pamplet for clown college. (He never spoke) I never made it as i took my music to the road at 17 in bands. But deep down I always thought of that clown college. My daughter says im a silly clown daily. Thanks for posting this.It was fantastic!
Shug, This revelation explains a lot! I mean, it's comforting to know that you actually went to school for this stuff... yet you are a natural. Whoooo Buddy! Haden+
You have obviously put a lot of time and effort into developing those skills. Great stuff, Sean. Love it all. You remind me a little bit of Robin Williams in some of the things you do.
Very cool indeed! My dad played trumpet in the St.Paul Osman Temple Shrine Circus for many years and my sister and I went with him every night because mom worked nights ,dad worked days,no babysitter so we had a blast going with when the circus came to town atleast 6 years straight circa 1970 - 1976 backstage shaking hands with clowns was wild ,getting our programs autographed ,all the animals,it was amazing and that wasn't even the Ringling Brothers.
***** that put a smile on my face looking at your memories and thinking of those days when achoo d clown was out of the box...but I've still got my Ben Nye and rainbow hair in the closet and very rarely those balloons just kind of creep into my pockets when a kid is having a really bad day.
***** don't we all? When I've been in the hospital years ago I'd wake up and twist a bunch up to have my magical helper put around the pediatric ward for them to wake up to in the morning. These days they don't allow it but it was great for morale.
I came across your channel while searching "hammock camping". I lay in bed until midnight most nights watching the videos of your excursions.....wife thinks I crazy (maybe I am??) Anyhow, love your videos and very interesting to see some of this early days stuff!
Wow, no wonder you have me laughing throughout all your videos I've seen so far. It's so refreshing to see your talent shine through in your hammock and backpacking videos. I figured you were just a goofy oddball but you're literally a Clown. I love it when you break out in improvised song and soliloquy. Don't mean to get too serious on you, but it does my heart good to know you're out there. Thanx for the inspiration sir.
Wow! This was great! It certainly put a face on some history that I experienced. Really cool. I had not thought of Gunther (quite the celeb back when) in a long time. Thanks for the time travel. I do think that you should maybe look into some documentary perhaps. With all the new RUclips studios popping up there might actually be an outlet for your circus story. VERY entertaining.
Shug, they say you "can't go back", but I think you just did. Just a little, but it was in your voice during that narration. Thank you for sharing. Ken
The world needs more people like you ....it makes life more colorful!! Thnx Shug!
I little of me goes a long way)))))
You, sir, are a blessing to us all - in your humor and in the way you share your accumulated knowledge. Thanks for sharing your history and so much more. Whoooo Buddy!
My pleasure. We are getting ready for the 50th Clown College Reunion in Florida. Gonna be nuts!
Shug,
Thanks for Clowning around for all these years. You are a REAL entertainer ! From juggling to eating caned meat or telling us who to hang a hammock.
Holy crap, i didn't know Sean did this much. The guy is extremely talented. Hope he comes back to the WI State fair for many more years
It's a wonderful life! Thanks for sharing your life with us.

Thanks for that! You have had an amazing life in the show and it was beautiful to get a glimpse of it!

Thank you for the memories!!!
The Big Show~~~~ It was the best time ever. Especially looking back on it. We think about it everyday. Glad you have good memories too.

We grieve it here. There are many other circuses out there. Ringling tried to get too modern and should have remained nostalgic. It is very sad.
Yes, it is very very sad.
What an amazing life you have lived thus far! Talent in so many cool things. Glad I stumbled onto this channel.
I look back and realize that I have. Easy to forget sometimes here in the 'Burbs! Thankee.

Thanks for posting and sharing a little piece of clown history.
It reminds me of the good old daze and being young and poor!
What a incredible assortment of talents you have!
Thank you and I am bowing here.
I thankee.

Trumpet is so important in a circus band!
Awesome stuff. I really appreciate your sharing.
So great! Thanks for sharing!
+Joseph Polk Whooooooo Buddy. Some great days.
Fantastic! Its fun to look back.
The days of my life. Thanks for watching it.
Great stuff Shug! Thanks for sharing!
Shug, you are the greatest show on earth .. well You Tube anyway.
Enjoyed this, great bit of history, now we know why your soooooo good! :-)
that was something special thanks for sharing
***** that put a smile on my face looking at your memories and thinking of those days when achoo d clown was out of the box...but I've still got my Ben Nye and rainbow hair in the closet and very rarely those balloons just kind of creep into my pockets when a kid is having a really bad day.
William Kennison Still have my first clown nose....
Thankee....see you at midnight!
I try to be a Mr. Brightside....someone has to be! Thanks.
No one likes Mr Bungle after all, unless it's the band ;)
Way cool! Thanks for all the laugh.
Y'elcome.
