    Great makeup!
My favorite haunted house movie of all time. When I saw this back in the 60s, it stuck with me forever. I never looked at wall patterns the same way ever since.
BTW - you do see the ghost/spirit in a sense towards the end of the movie, IMO. There's a gust of wind that blows across a specific scene. It's subtle. Once you see it, it becomes obvious. A nice touch.

Two final comments, this film is less is more, it's more frightening NOT seeing the ghost and letting the imagination run, something Christopher Lee was a fan of. Lastly, I will wonder for many a year how there was little to no reaction when Grace popped her head out at the top of the stairs, not even a jump to the music.

This is a fantastic movie! Actually, the reason why the miniseries on Netflix "The Haunting of Hill House" is not a direct adaptation of Shirley Jackson's book is because its writer-director, Mike Flanagan, thought that this film adaptation couldn't really be improved upon, so what he did with the miniseries was to be inspired by the book and this film, and use them as a jump off point to create something else in the same spirit and using some of the same names, but creating a totally different story with different characters. Personally, I love both creations.

Like, this movie is just fantastic. There is no full explanation and the only overt sign that it's ghosts is the breathing door, while the rest could be a result of Eleanor's troubled mind.

agreed. FINALLY! many of these movie "reaction" people refuse to watch b&w films and they're missing some of the best movies ever made.

in the book the wife isn't a paranormal skeptic but an enthusiast. like her husband. but not from a scientific interest, like her husband. she was expected to arrive and she and her male companion, who doesn't appear in the film, played a bigger role in the plot.

As an adult I have tried to find this movie, but the only fact I had to go on was the name of it that Swedish cinemas chose, which would translate to ”Hill House is haunted”. I have looked for black and white movies with names that have ’haunted/haunting’ and ’Hill House’ in them but the best fit I found was an old Vincent Price movie which doesn’t have the door scene in it, and also was really silly. I always recommend this movie to people because I believe that it's one of the best examples of non-slasher thriller/suspense/horror films. The scares come from camera angles, audio effect & music while leaving a lot to the imagination. This is the best formula for keeping audiences on the edge of their seats.
Another fine example of this type of film is 1980s "The Changeling" with George C. Scott. (It's a great horror-ghost story-mystery.) They each show very little and let your imagination scare the daylights out of you 👹.

Scared the crap out of me when I was 10 or 11 in the late 60's. The whole ghost house whilst never seeing the evil left me leaving the lights on when I went to bed that night.

I'm a new subscriber and I really appreciate your love for these classic movies. A few suggestions for older movies for Halloween or anytime really are as follows:
1973 Legend of Hell House (the Mt Everest of haunted houses)
1971 Let's Scare Jessica to Death
    1964 Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte
    1961 The Innocence
    1946 The Spiral Staircase
    Thanks 🙏

I usually don't watch reactions to movies I haven't seen, but I have this thing that I really need to procrastinate today, so I did anyway. I am into older movies, '30s to '60s, but have somehow missed tthis one, and I'm surprised of how graphic and sinister it seems to be for its age, especially the opening scenes! Lots of interesting cinematography and camerawork, I really need to see this, how irritating Eleanor even may be. xD Thanks for showing this!
    Greetings from Sweden

That is the best makeup job! I thought you were part of the cast before I saw what it was. What you are watching is a CLASSIC and its wonderful. Its Shirley Jackson, the mother of all spooky house books. The book is better but the film is wonderful and the main actress (cant think of her name right now) is amazing.

IN the mid 60's on Friday Nights, our tv station showed spooky movies. My mom and I would watch them together waiting for my dad to get off work.

    • @tarmaque
      @tarmaque Год назад

I did the same thing in the 70's with my Dad. We'd spend weekends with my Grandparents, and my Grandfather worked Swing Shift. My Dad would let me stay up until 1:00 when my Grandfather got home from work to say goodnight. At 11:00 there would be a British show on TV, usually _The Avengers_ or _The Saint,_ and at midnight a scary movie would come on. Usually Hammer Horror. I'd like to say I made it through _all_ those old movies with my Dad, but that would be a lie.

I have fond memories of this creeping me out when I was 12, the first grown-up scary movie I ever saw. This time the only fright I got was when I clapped eyes on you. My God! Where's my sunshine angel? Hill House was badly in need of your summer's-morn radiance. Pretty tame stuff by today's standards, I suppose, but I really like the way everything is done by sound and shadow and suggestion, cinematically quite satisfying.
Julie Harris was effectively irritating, a fine performance. The exquisite Claire Bloom, who has played opposite every major leading man you would care to name on stage and screen, is rather wasted here. She never really got the big break she deserved in Hollywood. Likewise Russ Tamblyn, a sensational dancer. Should I be sorry you didn't see a ghost? Maybe not. The mirror will have to do, sweetie.

You missed the whole point. This movie needed no visible ghosts- it was scarier without them. SCARIEST HORROR FLICK OF ALL TIME- ALTHOUGH IT WAS MORE OF A PSYCHOLOGICAL DRAMA THAN A HORROR FLICK.

Without doubt one of the finest haunted house films. Don''t waste your time watching the remake its dreadful. The film is an adaptation of Shirley Jacksons book " The Haunting of Hill House " partially inspired by the real life story of the haunting of Borley Rectory.

Sorry but its the UK that drives on the wrong side of the road 😅
Last year i had the opportunity to drive in Scotland and at first i was worried to be driving manual on the other side as usual for me as a continental. But all it took was one day of constant driving and i adapted very well. Other than the direction of transite and using the left hand to shift, everything else was just the same. The car i drove, a KIA XCeed, was very lovely, ftll inlove with it in the mix of the gorgeaus country that is Scotland.
