    For the M42 screw mount adapters, there are little holes in the adapter where you can use a hex wrench to adjust the placement of the lens on the Mount. That is how you center the f-stop controls and depth of field section. The reason is different manufacturers lenses screw on at different points like Zeiss Jena lenses vs Takumars.

    • @williamgollatz1911

      M42 to F from K&F Concept is not meant to be adjusted. It has glass in it and just one small phillips set screw, which may not be for adjustment. Their M42 to RF comes with an allen wrench for adjusting with its 3 set screws.

    • @robert18productions
      @robert18productions 9 месяцев назад

      @@williamgollatz1911 Interesting but odd. I do not know which model of M42 to FX adapter you are using but why would it have glass in it? Do not FX cameras have a short enough of a flange distance for M42 lenses to reach infinity focus?
      The only time I have seen glass for an adapter is to correct for infinity focus, is some type of teleconverter/telecompressor combo, or the glass is used some other optical compensation.

    • @williamgollatz1911
      @williamgollatz1911 9 месяцев назад

      @@robert18productions I corrected my reply for F mount for Nikon. Its F mount part, but recent DSLR is a FX mount. There are actually two versions of the M42 adapter for F. The deeper one I got, with some glass is designed for "infinity" focus. I believe it helps lenses that might need some extra space. The flange is a little deeper. I presume the glass is there to compensate for the extra length. If I set the 100mm f/2.8 to infinity focus, the interior barrel (I don't know the part names) comes out maybe half a millimeter beyond the threads of the lens. I supposed this adapter is designed for lens that might go father.

    • @williamgollatz1911
      @williamgollatz1911 9 месяцев назад

      I will say that on my F mount Nikon, the centerline is way off. Just for aesthetics, I'd rather an adapter that can be adjusted. The M42-Nikon F adapters from K&F can't be adjusted. The non infinity focus adapter is just a flange.

    M42 makes a lot of sense for a low budget lens. Completely universal without losing anything, because it's manual anyway and can be adapted to any camera incredibly cheaply. Massively cheaper to produce. Cheap to adapter. Quite clever really.

    It should be noted that this is completely expected. This lens purposefully uses an optical design that was patented in 1893, the Cooke triplet. It's kind of amazing it performs as well as it does. It's a lens intended for people who know this, kind of like that Petzval lens you reviewed all these years ago. Except this one is affordable.

    It's funny that you don't at all understand one of the most popular vintage mounts, or the optical lens design, but great that you enjoyed it for what it is all the same.
    It feels exactly what we vintage lovers want from a lens, but sharper. Even that wide open centre sharpness is more than we typically get from the actual old stuff. It's going to be a great lens for a lot of people.
    and the original it is based on being so expensive, it's a huge deal on price. Though you can get other, similar lenses for half as much, they won't quite be the same.

    This is a lovely and welcome edition for creative boke lovers. Now if TTArtisans could clone the Biotar 75mm F/1.5 next that'll be great. And while I do realize there is already a russian clone of it called the Helios 40. I'd like to see if TTArtisans could do a better job at it or even improve upon it with a higher MTF and reduced weight. If they can do that and sell it for $250.00 I'm sure it will sell like hotcakes. And please make it M42 for the film lovers as well as E-mount so we can keep the lens more compact without an adapter.

    It's a copy of the 100mm f2.8 trioplan. Most of the originals, are in m42 mount, which is probably why TTArtisan, made it in m42 mount (bear in mind, most people buying the old ones, which is the biggest market for this lens are buying it in m42 mount. This TTArtisan lens is actually good value, because the old originals now sell at ridiculous prices, and the new ones from the resurrected badge, Meyer-Optik Gorlitz are just ridiculously priced for a one trick pony lens, with only 3 elements. The optical performance, seems the same as the old originals and newer copies. I might get one at some time, as I've seen some really nice wildflower photography done with them. But as I say, they're a one trick pony, shooting wide open at f2.8 where there are lots of specular highlights in the background. At other apertures, you might as well use a better lens, and add some post effects, if you want to make look low contrast.

    This lens is a bokeh toy, for close up shots. For that you need extension. Extension tubes are extremely limiting in so many ways, so many of us use helicoid adapters for M42 lenses. That's what you can do with this lens, reduce it's MFD significantly and get closer to macro territory. That's way more useful than having this lens in E, Z or whatever mount. I wish all my manual lenses were M42. Actually, I didn't care to buy some modern lenses because they aren't.

They are more secure than clip on ones that can fall off and I have almost lost a few clip on lens caps as they have fallen off my lenses when I thought they were secure. I never thought I'd see a new lens with the M42 screw mount. I have been thinking recently of getting a few M42 screw mount lenses and adapting them to get artistic photos with, but I won't be getting this lens though as usually if I am looking for a new lens, it has to have sharp enough image quality and good image quality in the corners as well and good contrast.

    Another point I should bring up is that the lens adapter can really matter in terms of sharpness. If the inside of the adapter is reflective it can cause reflections decreasing contrast. If the fallange distance is too short or too long, it can either focus a bit past infinity or not reach infinity. As a result it can affect the depth of field markings on the lens. Another issue is the width of the adapter, this can cause the lens to loose image quality especially in the corners.

    • @robert18productions
      @robert18productions Год назад +1

      Then again I think this lens uses a triplet design which is one of the oldest lens designs. Famously used in the Meyer Optik Trioplan and Cooke Triplet lenses. The design was often used for cheap lenses and is similar to the Tessar design where it becomes sharp around f/3.5.

I own an old silver trioplan, and seems the image quality of the original and the clone is quite similar. Wonder if you are going to have a side by side IQ comparison video later? The old Trioplan is quite overpriced, but the new version is just over-overly overpriced, even if IQ is supposed to be much better. So, then would be nice to see how this clone compares to the 'original' ones. Thanks for your videos, really enjoy watching them, they are also very useful and informative!

    This lens does exactly what the samples and tests here says it does. It is a specialty lens for certain effects. Outside that range it may be undesirable for other uses. I do not use it for bubbles and find them hard to create in my use cases. I use it for tight portraits for a softer effect.
    The lens gives three effects that I use, all aperture related.
    At f/2.8, soft glow that wipes out the pores and tiny wrinkles in harsher, older faces, at f/3.5, the glow is lessened a bit and is more usable for cleaner younger faces, f/4 to 16 it is a normal sharp lens with softer corners, the out of focus areas do not take on the shape of the aperture blades. I have no need of this lens for anything else as I have contrastier lenses for other uses.
    At 3.5 it is similar in character to my Zuiko 100mm 2.8 at f/2.8 in the softening effect, at f/4 the Zuiko is normal in contrast again.
    Softer does not mean less sharp. You can see the detail, but it is under a veil of glow. Not as much as some lenses at f.95 or at the max opening of some other fast lenses. You can see the individual hair in the subject but each hair is surrounded by a spread of light we call glow. At f/3.5 that spread is less, at f/4 it is gone. It is this spread that lowers the contrast in wrinkles, spots and pores that makes this desirable to me for my use. It is not the same as using a filter. Close but not the same. I can also achieve some of this in DXO using the contrast and micro contrast controls but it is not the same.
    You just have to play with it and see where it fits in your use. Not for everyone. But Cheap enough to try.
    This is one of three TTartisans lenses that i have.
    The 35mm f/2 is an all metal tank, as they say. A good walk around lens for me as I can carry the weight. I have carried far heavier. Nothing wrong with it. Just a normal lens for normal pics.
    The 50mm f/1.2 is a nice but cheap lens without the plasticky feeling that you would think you would get for the price. I use it for the effect it gives for upper body portraits. It is unique on full frame since the sensor coverage is really for an APSC lens. Swirly bokeh and darkened corners. Not for closeup portraits, not for every lighting scheme, not for every subject, but it is there when the use case arises. That is what I feel these lenses are for...For me.

    This lens was delivered to my door last week for 127USD. It shoots way above its weight/cost. Want sharp edged corners...look elsewhere...this lens is not about that...nor should it be. It's main purpose is portraits, and creating bokeh backgrounds. In the right light...f/2.8 will do...but you might as well just shoot at f/3.5 to f/4...contrast and nice color saturation. This is an old design and modern engineering improves it, but is also constrained by the design. You have to watch the direction of the light...get that right...everything falls into place.
    Btw...if you enjoy B&W...this lens will reward you.

    I just come across this release from TT artisan and I was surprised how clever I found it all. People looking for more 'arty' lenses to get a different look than everyone else have been looking at vintage lenses for a few years now. M42 means they don't need production for all the current lens mounts, those looking for this look probably already have an adapter and, if not, they are easy to get. Its funny how some simple photos with the 'bubble bokeh' will get a lot of 'wow how did you do that' comments.
    A little sad its not a bit sharper/contrasty across the frame at f2.8, but I guess they just straight took the old optical design with no modern updates. But I guess thats why they can offer it at the price, make it expensive and even those looking for this look might turn away. Offering cheap lenses with more arty rendering looks like a great niche for them to take advantage of I think. I haven't ordered one yet, but I'm really tempted (hence the browsing for videos on it :D).

      It is irrelevant whether or not the camera setting for lens corrections is on or off, because the lens itself and the dumb adapter are purely manual - there is no correction information to be had. It can only be done in editing software, once a lens profile has been created.

    Hi, not sure why you would turn camera corrections on for the contrast / sharpness test. It has no electrical connection to the body, so I don‘t know what the body would correct? Using M42 sounds more logical to me than building one of these for each possible mount - just get the adapter for your body and be done with it. I wish more manual-only manufacturers would do this, that way you could take all those new manual lenses with you when you switch from one make to another!

The M42 mount will not keep anyone away who is interested in dabbling with bubble bokeh. If I didn't already have a Trioplan, I'd probably get this lens!

    M42 mount film cameras have a large flange focal distance. Its only really Nikon F mount that is longer, so the lenses are easily adapted to most DSLRs as well as mirrorless. I adapt M42 mount Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50/2.8 and Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Lydith 30/3.5 lenses to my Nikon Z6 and theyre so much fun, and give very unique character.
    I dont know whether this TT Artisan is a direct optocal copy of the Trioplan (it looks like they've coaxed extra sharpness from the 19th century Cooke Triplet design) but the bokeh definotely has similar bokeh. I'd love to try this lens on some flowers close-up with the sun bouncing off some dew in the background - circumstances like that is where this lens excels... it's actually quite a smart move from TT Artisan

    M 42 made me laugh, BUT, for now probably 10 to 13 years I watch photography channels proposing the use of analogue lenses and film photography! And for quite some time mirrorless cameras make it so much easier! And with M 42 you can use the old Petzval lenses! I myself plan to get a mirrorless and turn her into a "cyborg" with old Zuikos and Minolta MD Rokkors ;-)

    Lovely. I have always wanted a MOG Trioplan 100 (I collect MOG and other vintage Lenses) but people have wanted silly money for them on Ebay. This might be TT Artisans best idea yet. Let's hope they are 'inspired by' other classic (and very overpriced on ebay) vintage lens designs soon. This isn't a lens for sharpness-obsessed pixel peepers - its for 'character' and using it for what it is good at.

    • @tridinh1011

      Chromatic aberration is basically stray light, so the most common colors of CA would be the ones that affect the wb of the image, the rf135L has red CA

    • @fandyus4125
      @fandyus4125 Год назад

      Probably has to do with the fact that conventional lenses are usually designed to focus red and blue light on the same plane. Aberrations differ slightly for every individual wavelength however.

      This lens is essentially a copy of the Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Trioplan 100mm F2.8. The demand for the original Trioplan lens has been so great that Meyer-Optik Gorlitz released a new version that sells for about $1,000. At $150 the TTArtisan version is hoping to cut into that market.

    • @princeharbinger
      @princeharbinger Год назад +2

      @marksieving7925 It certainly will cut into that market. I don't see too many photographers eager to spend that kind of money for a MF lens with no weather sealing. Even buying the older used copies for $600.00 is a bit much. If they wanted to make a good comeback they would have sold the MKII version for $350.00 tops. It's a hard sell at $1,000.00. When you could invest in a nice kit of vintage lenses for that price with arguably better boke. I also learned that this Chinese copy outperforms it. I'd be curious to see if they can clone the Biotar 75mm.

    Here is a question, does using a full frame camera in APSC mode change the bokeh you get?
    Alternatly, will using a full frame lens give larger bokeh on an APSC sensor?

    • @helgeschneider4417
      @helgeschneider4417 Год назад +2

      Given you stay at the exact same distance, yes, the details in the bokeh will get larger. Though they are always larger on an APSC-camera, regardless of the lens type. (Though, again, only if you stay at the same distance.)
      If you adjust composition for the crop factor (by moving away from the subject) then I'm not really sure what the end result would be in terms of size of the bokeh compared to full frame, but it would be noticeably less creamy, since the higher distance increases your depth of field.

    As much as I admire and celebrate smaller companies doing competitively prices products and come up with interesting ideas, I POSITIVELY DO NOT see the point of making and releasing lenses as bad as this one that no one can really use for all practical manners. Any sort of acceptable IQ at stake is ground zero with something like this. And worse, coming out with products like this utterly destroys the manufacturer's reputation.. at least as far as I'm concerned that puts them instantly in the category of not taking them seriously. I see a lens performing like this and I stay from the brand permanently and resolutely all together because, if their optics are already as bad as this out of the box, just wait till the mechanics' reliability (or lack of) kick in, in no time once you actually start using them. These lenses will fall apart worth of oils spills, funguses, dust and stuck aperature/focus mechanisms in no time flat on top of genetically pointless horrid performance. What's the point? I guess for some there is one as people keep buying them and the manufacturer keeps making them. Affordable Trioplan or not, no thanks. And thank you as always for your informative videos that save sensible people from throwing their money out the window :)

    I wish more manual focus lenses came in M42 mount. You can not only get adapters to use them on mirrorless models you can get m42 - some (I have Canon RF) with the adapter including a helical focus mount allowing closer focus than the lens alone can do. It is great when lensmakers compute new designs that actually make use of the shorter flange focal length but when they are just making things that will focus to infinity on old DSLR's, the space may as well be put to good use rather than just giving us a longer empty tube. TTArtisan seems to prefer lenses with poor sharpness at wide apertures or even at any aperture. I returned my TTArtisan 21mm f/1.5 a couple years ago for exactly that reason. I love my Laowa 105 f/2 STM. It allows the user to chose sharp or not and degrees of 'character' rather than following the 'fuzzy is fine' theory. I'm glad we have third party makers who specialize in things that only a few will actually want. We have come a long way since the days when the arty crowd smeared Vasoline on their UV filter edges.
