      Wind down for bed for me after a hectic day. There could not have been anything better video for me on RUclips than this. However, the breakfast was torture to watch for this ex pat Andy. When I get back to the UK my first go to is haddock and chips, the second bacon and eggs! Keep these videos coming Andy!

    Hello,
    My brother and I just finished watching this video and have to say how amazing your woodland shelter seems to us. The firepit and grate, the wood stove, the shelter itself are all wonderful. We are older men of 71 years and would love to have a place such as this to spend time away from the noise of the world. Your creation has a magical quality to it, an almost shaman quality. Your spirit and quality are very much revealed in your unique shelter and also in your presentation. You have no idea how much I wanted to eat the chicken and the egg sandwich! A real joy to watch!! Would love to see more of your offerings!!
    Thank you!
    Greg and Chris

    When splitting up your firewood on The chopping block have you ever tried standing your wood up on the block or about a third of the wood is hanging off over the side? Makes it split a lot easier from no resistance under one side of your wood pushing back at you instead of peeling off. 👍🏻🇺🇲

    Andy, If you want to keep your fire going through a bit of rain, put the grill over the fire and put flat rocks on it. Even if you pile on small ones, the rain will steam off of the hot stones and your fire will not go out.

    That's not an invasive Asian hornet, I'm pretty sure it's our one and only native.

    • @lexluthor9966
      @lexluthor9966 Год назад +1

      Considering there are only 2 confirmed sightings of Asian Hornets in the UK this year I'm also siding with you this was a European species.

    • @snorkherder
      @snorkherder Год назад +1

      I agree not an Asian hornet, Hornet or not, I don't understand the need to kill it to remove it from your shelter, I've caught wasps, bee's, spiders etc. Many times with my billy can and moved them from my shelter and away from harm. I don't get the point in heading out in to nature and killing something your not going to eat.

    • @Martyntd5
      @Martyntd5 Год назад +1

      @@snorkherder Yeah, I broadly agree. But I do agree with killing Asian hornets if you correctly identify them. They aggressively kill honey bees and other bees that are the primary pollinators of our food. They are mass-murderers of the little good guys. One AH can easily take out an entire hive of honey bees. You could make the argument that if in doubt, kill anyway as the European hornet is common and can tolerate the loss and better to be mistaken than let an AH escape. I dont know about that, as mentioned above the AH are fortunately super rare, for now at least. Better I think to take a picture of it with your phone, GPS mark the location and report the sighting to the gov. I think there is a web page for it.

    • @snorkherder
      @snorkherder Год назад

      @@Martyntd5 I agree with your stance and what to do about invasive hornets, I've followed this channel for years and love the vids, it does sadden me though when the old "swat the bothersome insect" scenario happens. I thought it was about leave no trance ?, Thanks for the reply :)

    • @Martyntd5
      @Martyntd5 Год назад

      @@snorkherder Yeah, again I broadly agree, but in this case I think killing the hornet even if you've got the ID wrong, is reasonable. If I hadn't got a phone or had no signal, and I genuinely thought it was ...or even might be an AH, then I very well might give it the heel of my boot.

    Just thinking about all the cool shelters you've built over the years. This one seems quite like the ones in Sweden on the first trip. Well thought out so that it's a place to sit as well as to get out of the weather. If it was really bad, you could drop a tarp. Yes, french toast is good, you've done pancakes and of course eggs, Simon just did waffles made from canned biscuits; I'd imagine there are a lot of products that would make a hearty breakfast. You'll come up with some good ideas; you've a knack for that! Thanks for another terrific video.

    European Hornets are a bit unfairly maligned. They have have a frightening appearance but they're unlikely to sting, in fact they'll quite often bump into you as a warning rather stinging if you go too close to their nests.
    They're also don't wipe out colonies of bees like some of their relatives do.
    I had one land on my arm when I was asleep on the train once. I brushed it off (on the second attempt they're quite substantial). I probably would have gotten stung if that was bee or wasp. Definitely an unnerving experience though.
