I love it when guests tell a personal reminiscence around a film they’ve selected like Lee’s Claudine story
this was so beautiful! what a nice guy!!
Hall & Oates shirt gets an A+ from me, sir. Also, I’m sorry about your father.
I wonder how old that t-shirt is but you can really tell he wore it with a lot. 👕
He directs right?
@@tiananesbitt7156 Yes he does.
That T shirt is legit.
Love that t-shirt. May Darryl and John one day set aside their resentments.
Takes his aunt to see a movie.
After seeing it, she slaps him.
And _that's_ the moment he realizes he wants to be a director??
I now love this man, and I've only seen one of his movies!
The picks, since a link has yet to be listed in the bio:
8½ - Federico Fellini
Essential Fellini - Collector’s Set
Do the Right Thing - Spike Lee
Querelle - Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Female Trouble - John Waters
Pickup on South Street - Samuel Fuller
The Piano - Jane Campion
Claudine - John Berry
Spartacus - Stanley Kubrick
Never been this early, but I’m glad I watched. This man obviously puts so much care into what he does. Amazing 🎉
Love this guy, loved The Paperboy.
Mr. Daniel, thank you for sharing your favorite movie selections and the rationale behind them, but more importantly, thank you for sharing your life with us. I'm sure that your dad is looking down from heaven with pride. Peace be with you and your family.
This man to me was "The Great White Hope", then he as Roop in "Claudine", I was 13 and it still resonates to this day. Thank you, Sir! You will be sorely missed.
What a fascinating director. He has a great choice of films picked out.
I’m fourth but have no idea which of the three above was truly first.
That bag got filled up!
absolute legend.
Lee has some great selections. Fellini, Sam Fuller, Jane Campion. I remember in the late 1980s going to the Art House Theaters in NYC. Being all Cosmopolitan or trying to develop a certain sophistication with the Arts and the city. Great times and great film. Finally RIP James Earl Jones one of my favorite actors. I do remember Claudine.
Lee Daniels is so dreamy.
Right? And I must add, which way to the gun show, Lee?
Love a Sam Fuller shoutout! Wish we could get a White Dog upgrade and would LOVE to see Run of the Arrow get put into the collection!
Reppin' classic Hall & Oates. Yaaaaaaasssssssssssssssss!!!!
I love the Fellini set.
Finally a great one. Funny, too. Thx Lee
I just watched The Deliverance on Netflix, it was interesting.
Still waiting for someone to pick Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment.
❤❤
😊😊😊😊great
I'm really the only person who can't stand 8 1/2, huh? Querelle is pretty good, not my favorite Fassbinder. Love me some Richard Widmark. Interesting choices.
Fuller underappreciated methinks 🤔
Good taste for someone who makes awful movies

I love absolutely when a Criterion-Closet visitor shares how their early-childhood film experiences with their family influenced their choice to be a filmmaker. Lee Daniel's sharing his choices and his heartfelt memories here is a treasure.
His choice of Claudine could not have been timed better, RIP to Mr. James Earl Jones.
No doubt I watched Claudine for the very first time a week ago and it was fantastic.
RIP James Earl Jones from "Claudine".
One of the Greatest Actors who ever lived.
Miss his work ALREADY
The Piano is a superb movie. The movie and score blew me away.
@@Mark8v29 their 4k release of it also looks fucking phenomenal and has great supplements
Rainer Fassbinder, Spike Lee and John Water pickups are great! ^^ His story about attending the theater for Claudine is absolutely beautiful and it’s awesome to see how film has made these directors make film :3
I thought Criterions Spartacus release was out of print.
Shouldn't this video be called 'Lee Daniels Presents LEE DANIELS' CRITERION PICKS: A Film by Lee Daniels'.
Sorry. It's a cheap joke but it makes me laugh.
That was great! As a Philadelphian, seeing Lee Daniels' work and success is always rewarding! Love that he talks about his life here, rocking the Hall & Oates tee-shirt, and that he filled up that bag, hahaha! I would never even imagine "Claudine" is in the CC!! RIP JEJ!!
"Make yours a happy home"!
This is one of my favorites, so honest and pure.
100%. Kinda envious of his verve, his passion for his vocation and, seemingly, life. Dude is, in the classic sense, cool. No one is cool anymore.
Great picks!
I was a little frustrated that he threw the big Fellini box in his bag without talking about it, but when he slowed down towards the end, I could really feel what these movies mean to him. Bless you Mr Daniels!
I wanted to know more about that Fellini box too. It looks like it didn't have 8.5 in it?
@@peybak yeah, it seemed like kinda weird edit. I’m gonna look into that box!
Lee Daniels is spectacular! What an awesome personality. Great director and totally relatable. Legendary closet picks. 💯
In Nederland heeft bijna niemand meer een dvd speler omdat ze alles streamen. Hebben ze in de USA nog steeds dvd spelers? Ik zou ook graag een keer in de kast willen 😊
How does none of Fellini's stuff not make sense? He must mean latter career Fellini when he was more surrealist & experimental because early Fellini was a pretty straightforward neo-realistic phase albeit his films were no less powerful & memorable. That's always been one of Fellini's biggest draws that he had two very different phases as a filmmaker & was very accomplished at both.
That instantly annoyed me. Fellini changed the way I see the world…helped things make more sense. Hmm
Watched le samourai last night for the first time. Awesome (talk about not being straightforward lol)
@@hitman9t92Grabbed the 4k last week. Essential upgrade.
8 1/2 is overrated self indulgent crap with some nice visuals.
@@hitman9t92Le Samourai by Jean Pierre Melville? How does that connect to Fellini?
Candy store indeed! Lee's bag seems heavier. Were there other films he took but did not discuss?
He seems immensely likeable. I haven't gravitated towards the kinds of films he makes, but now I'll have to make a point of it.
Really sold me on watching Claudine! Especially with the passing of the great James Earl Jones!
I'm so glad he mentioned both Thelma Ritter & Sam Fuller. I love his diverse choices.
Loooove him and his picks!! Thanks for the Thelma Ritter shoutout!! Claudine! ❤
Did he just make a new horror movie on Netflix? I maybe did not know who he was. by name wise. Hence the Question.
Yeah it’s not very good tho lol. Seems like a cool dude but the only film of his I really liked was Precious
The Deliverance
Cool thank you both 🤝🤝
Fellini all the way! Love his stuff!
I wonder what Stanley Kubrick would say about “The Deliverance”
I instantly want to become friends with this guy
Who cares what Lee Daniels like?
Did I just witness a robbery?
Damon dash ran up on this clown and demanded the 2 million he owed dame
I don't recall anyone ever picking 'Querelle' before ... amazing movie, great choice. In fact, Fassbinder films are seldom chosen for some reason. Great choice with 'Claudine,' a fine film with great performances and, as was rightly pointed out, a kick-ass soundtrack.
Lee Daniels is my first choice to direct a Static Shock film.
He had more than that in the bag! Release the directors cut!
Hearing Lee sing Female Trouble makes me wish we had that song on streaming. Pure trash. Fabulous.
Vale both Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones. Claudine is a masterpiece.
I look forward to seeing more from Lee Daniels. 🙂
What interesting pics!!!!
Nice to watch, and listen to.
He seems cool and I’m sure his film is good, but “The Deliverance”? Couldn’t they find a title that isn’t nearly the same as the 1970s film?
seems like a beautiful dude! i wonder if he likes Withnail & I? not sure if that's part of the collection; but, if armageddon is...
It is, but it's out of print.
You should consider doing a contest/drawing for fans to enter to have a chance to experience the Criterion Closet. I would absolutely put my name in that bucket!
HELL TO THE YEAH!
How about doing interview of Ralph Fiennes, Sir Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Michael Keaton, Tom Wlaschiha, Ralph Ineson, Daniel Radcliffe, Daniel Craig, Tom Hanks, Jim Carrey, Christian Bale, Cillian Murphy, Sandra Oh, Matt Damon, Jason Isaacs, Quentin Tarantino, Mads Mikkelsen, Steven Spielberg, Ang Lee, Will Ferrell, Coen Brothers and Mel Brooks on Criterion closet picks?
Do none of them have a closet video? I’m surprised if none do. Probably depends on availability tho
At the very least, would love to see Jack Huston, Nick Offerman & Megan Mullally, and Team Downey.
@@deakensomoza3305 three of those people are dead
Doesn’t Lee Daniels still owe money to Dame Dash?
How about stfu and watch Lee Daniel's recommendations?
First
@criterion you should choose me, a normal cinephile to take a run in the closet. Think about it!
I wish these people would clearly state the titles and display the covers on these BluRays.
Watch the very end-it clearly states what each and every film is.
@@goldenhurricane20 The man is a director. He should be aware of what he shows to the camera: Rather than just telling us his feelings, he should show the cover of the video clearly and state its name.
He’s so charming here that you almost forget how awful his last movie was!
Trump 2024 or Harris 2024?
Won’t say because I don’t wanna get yelled at 😂
