You did a great job explaining everything in an easy to understand way and addressed many things I was wondering about. My little guy is just 4 months old, so I don’t think I’ll have to worry about this just yet. I took him to the vet a couple of weeks ago...not because he was sick, but more so to get a few questions answered and to start building a relationship with a good vet for when I really do need one. I spoke with her about hibernation and brumation but she said for now I won’t need to worry about it because he’s so young. She said just as you did that the main intention of a true hibernation is for breeding purposes, which is definitely not something I will be getting into. I was happy to hear this because true hibernation scares me. I’ve read in a few places about adjusting the timing of your lights as the seasons change, but my vet said to just keep it as it is year round. Right now I have the bulb (mercury vapour) going on at 6:00 am and turning off at 8:00 pm. Anyhow, thank you for all of the excellent information and tips. You did an incredible job and I love that you also included a snippet about how to tell if the tortoise is sick. I’ve saved this video incase I need to refer to it again the future.

      @@LorisHartland Hi Lori,
I'm from Broward, FL, mostly hot and wet whether. I have a 3 month old baby Sulcata. During Thanksgiving break I drove to Tennessee, all the time I keep him inside his tank, warmed up and with water and food. However, he stopped eating, although he drinks. He just sleeps and opens his eyes when I wake him up. Could be stressed from the trip? He looks healthy as always. I need help please! 🙏

Very informative! I JUST adopted a Russian Tortoise 3 days ago... I have general tortoise knowledge and assumed he was going into or already in some sort of hibernation but was somewhat concerned he could be sick because he hasn't eaten since we brought him home. I did soak him on the second day to make sure he's hydrated! This has made me feel much better. He doesn't show any other signs of sickness and from what his previous owner described it sounds like he may have already been in brumation before he came here. Thank you for all the great info!!

Great video, I think you've covered most people needs to know on this topic very well. I'm a novice owner to a baby red footed tortoise & will probably always have questions to ask about everything. I usually learn more after a purchase of most things despite all the searching & reading on the related topics, I was at least able to tell my tortoise is female which surprisingly the salesman at the pet shop claims he couldn't. But I'm still not sure of her age since I forgot to ask & she at the time of purchase appeared slightly larger than others which is one reason I choose this one, I guess my tortoise is healthy because I see no sighs of discharge, breathing problems or slow responding. But my question is she slowed & now stopped feeding after the first few days & spends all of her time sleeping, I brought her in February & the weather from where I'm at is between 12-22 degrees celcius for this time. I kept a UVA+UVB mercury full spectrum lamp on for 15 hours a day & indoor temperatures is about 20 degrees celcius when light is off at the coldest, please tell me if she's in the latter 2 situations when most of the times her eyes are shut but can still wake up when being moved.

So brumation, hibernation, and aestivation are the things that make me very hesitant about owning a tortoise; more hibernation than the other two. The idea of putting your tortoise in a refrigerator is just scary to me and I'm afraid I would hurt them. Anyway, so you take him out to soak, so it's okay to "wake" them up during brumation or aestivation to do that? Like waking them up won't mess with them or anything?

Hi! Thank you for all of your informative videos. I’m having trouble with this issue. I’m caring for a wild, (injured), EBT. Her instincts are very strong and is trying to do so even though her lights and temps haven’t changed since summer. It was rec. that she not do it this winter due to her injury. She went over 4 weeks without eating so I ended up tube feeding her for fear of starvation, etc, I don’t mind decreasing her light hours and temps, but in the numerous articles I’ve read re. Brumation, the temp must be below 50*F or their metabolism is still working somewhat, and this can result in starvation. I’m so confused and panicked at this point. Can you touch on those subjects for me?! Thanks

hello i have a tortoise that my dad found in the middle of a very busy intersection (we were able to get it before it was run over any cars) anyways my dad decided to just keep it because there's no nearby safe area around us where a tortoise could roam free so we figured someone probably either "dropped" it or lost it (sorry for referring to the tortoise as it because we don't know it's gender) so since im in southern california and based off the photos i saw on google i have a guess that it could potentially be a desert tortoise, when we first found it we didn't really see any issues for months till recently this january 2021 and i still can't figure out if it's hibernating/brumating/or it's just sick so can you please help? (we would consult a vet but my parents can't afford to pay for the bills so im having to research what's wrong and hopefully it can be treated at home)

Hey! I have 2 tortoises so I know plenty that May help. To find out the gender of a tortoise look at its tail. If it’s tail is long then it is a make. If it’s short then it’s a female. Tortoises need a big enclosure. If it’s a baby then keep it in a smaller one for now but it’s probably a bigger one so I would recommend getting a big box (NOT CARDBOARD) from Walmart that’s not see through and go to petsmart and get something for substrate. I would recommend reptibark. Tortoise need a hide for them to hide in. They also need a shallow water bowl (only fill up to their chin.) mist their cage once a week and depending on the species I would recommend 1x a week. They will need a bath. Now If it’s a desert tortoise it’s not going to need a bath often so I would say 1x a month to 1x a week if u prefer. There diet is 80% veggies and salads and 20% fruits and flowers. They can eat many things depending on your type of tortoise. I would recommend sprinkling their food with calcium with D3 3x a week. Some veggies could be Romaine lettuce (NO ICE BURGE LETTUCE) and google some others! Sorry if I didn’t cover enough u can google any other things or just ask me any other questions. I’m only 12 so I’m sorry if I didn’t explain well. Hope this helps! Good luck! ☺️

Our 4 yr old Horsefield has spent the last 8 weeks in his hide unless bought out for food & put beneath his uv - beneath which he’ll just bask for 30 minutes tops before returning to a super-introvert lifestyle...we’ve a Hermann the same age - separately but she and the two other older guys we have all go about daily stuff as expected for the late summer / autumn. Has anyone else had this ‘ 3rd state of hiding away ‘ which you say can be to escape constant high temperatures ? He has enough alternative un - UV lit space for respite if necessary but it’s’ straight back into hiding ‘ for this little chap. He will eat if plonked in front of food but has never been a big eater - compared to his 8yr old Spurthigh Auntie called Eric who’ll eat everything and more....If you’ve any thoughts that would be cool. I have a Hermann's and every year in fall or winter she gets super over active and will not eat. This can last up to 6 weeks then she just starts acting normal again. She's about 5 years old. Ever heard of that?

I guess it's normal since my one does that too. I've only had it for a few weeks and it is super active from 9am till 4pm and eats nothing then sleeps. It actually wakes up and sleeps on time with a schedule. I was worried since it's not eating anything but I guess it's normal since it's winter here where I live and it looks totally healthy. I've asked some pet shops and vets yet most were clueless. However seeing other people's comments here on RUclips made me feel less concerned. My tortoise is a Greek tortoise.

Pleased to see someone who doesn't use a fridge. We've had our marginated toitoise (a fairly hardy breed) for 50 years and I would never put him I a fridge. It's just not a natural environment and I think the natural variations in temperature help them survive, as long as its never ever below 3-5C 38-41F. I don't think our toitoise has read the book on brumation, he will move around in his large closed box when he is supposed to be "hibernating", and often wants to get out in the middle of January if it's mild (>13C 55F peak daily temp for a few days), but won't eat, but probably drinks, then goes back into deep sleep for another month or so. I always worry that all the pictures of toitoises being put to hibernate in a fridge are of very young toitoises, as if these owners haven't managed an older one. P.S I've just gone to buy some scales.
