@@GanderFlight i have repaired a few new curb rashes and peeled the wrap around the area. 4k made it more difficult to peel but it still came off with just a tad more work. Its been almost a year and was one of my DIY projects to date.
Interesting. I’d like to revisit this now, 2 years later. I have a repair to my John Deere seat, using dry wall reinforcing mesh and liquid Plastidip, that has held up. I used Flex Seal on some gutter joints (gutters are reclaimed leftovers from other houses) and places where I capped unwanted downspout holes with tin can lids. I found the Flex Seal became brittle after 2 or 3 years.
Hey with this idea, i just did mine with gorilla brand rubber spray. And because of what you said at the end, yeah i took off anything that seemed slightly cracked or brittle. And i peeled back as far as the foam looked stained from water where the adhesive would likely be compromised in the future. What i did differently and got great results, is i used ALEX painters caulk and coated all the foam first to put a nice thick layer to stop from foam holes and to raise the seat more leveled with the rest of the peeled cover. Looks better with less of a transition. But the gorilla brand is outstanding compared to plastidip that i used on my RV Spare Tire cover that didnt last 6 months and was incredibly thin. This gorilla stuff looks very thick and feels hearty.
I've made seat covers for formula cars and race bikes with professional-grade gaffers tape. It looks like matte black duct tape, but it's a different animal - better adhesive and very tough. It holds up pretty well for a year before the edges begin to lift. I never tried spraying Flex Seal over it, but that might be the ultimate. Be advised it's a lot more expensive than duct tape. A roll of the good stuff is about $30.
That was an interesting thing. I was betting on the wrong one for the outcome. Many of the "As Seen On TV" items just seem to the same thing as other products, just pushed out there with a marketing push. You have me rethinking that now. I was glad to see there was a significant difference. ❤️👍👏 Donovan & Jodi
Try using A harbor freight heat gun on the seats before about 16" to 24" away from the plastic seat cover. To soften and loosen it up first. Before spraying on the flex seal. Then as it's drying repeat that method about 18" to 24" inches away from seat and cover once more all over the entire seat cover and let cool and dry completely.
It lightly heats up the sealer just enough to spread it out evenly throughout.,an over the entire top of the damaged seat cover. In the areas that are most needed badly and missing in spots on it to.
Thanks for the video. I replaced the seat cover on my MC with vinyl sheets and vinyl glue which worked great. The seat was a convex shape but the mower is concave so I'm not sure how it will work.
I bet it would work ok - just take your time smoothing out the vinyl - might be a bit more nip and tuck around the edges with the mower seat shape than the motorcycle.
I think it would absolutely work for a time - might be something you have to repeat each year. Could also be something you do two or three coats/wraps to make it overall thicker. Might make the seat TOO slippery and hard to sit on. Test it out and let us know!
Good job. No ones gona see it when your sat on it anyway. On the forklifts at work we use old pillows wrapped in black bags or burst inflatables and then just strapped or bungeed to the seat
if you dont get fancy you can get a replacement seat for 30 bucks.seems that beats spending that much to spray over a seat that's breaking down badly. I spend 3 hrs at a time in the mower seat.
Personally. If I'd end up with this issue. Considering how expensive these specialty airesol cans are. I think I'd be best to completely remove the plastic and foam. Buy some new foam and w.e fabric that is and make a bran new seat with the old shell.
garage sale old inflatable beds work well as covers for $2 (queen size covers the whole mower i mean) But i guess you could use the vinyl to re cover the seat too.
Using smaller inflatable toys as seat covers or seat pads works well also. We’ve done this on our forklifts at work either got black bags or an old inflatable toy and stuffed it with an old pillow and bungeed to the seat. U could just use a flat shaped inflatable as is inflated and strapped to the seat but it wouldn’t last long before it burst lol
Flex Seal and Plastic-Dip are both latex paints in a can. In other words get a quart or gallon of good exterior grade house paint. Much cheaper and thicker material. Will outlast any junk spray on mess.
Hmmm, thats the first I've ever heard of that. Based on how I've seen Plastidip behave when removing it from my car wheels or on the DIP YOUR CAR RUclips channel I'm pretty confident its not just latex paint.
Hey man-watched this and your other video - good job. I see it's been a while since you put this video up - how are they holding up? I have a very expensive Kubota seat that is not brittle, it's just torn where you enter and exit. I tried your Plastidip w/duct tape and it did not work. The Plastidip just rolls up as you get on and off and eventually you are back where you started. On the back where you did on your other video, I'm sure it would work well. Do you think I'd have better luck with Flex Seal and spray foam? I'm curious because that Craftsman you did with Flexseal has been done in much the same locations as my problem area. You also seemed to elude to you could not get the Flexseal overspray to peel back off where you did not want it, so I think that may be a good sign. Thanks if you have advice on that.
Hey James! Yeah, plastidip is semi permanent so it makes sense that its coming off. I no longer have that mower so I can't speak to how its holding up today - but I think flex seal would be a better choice to try. Definitely tape off what you don't want overspray on. I'd also try to "feather" the spray if you can instead of having a hard tape line -- maybe try getting a wide piece of painters tape and stick down the outside edge leaving the inside edge up and spraying that way - might achieve a "fade" at the edge and less to grab on your pants.
I think that commenter just enjoys being contrary. Notice he had zero comeback when you asked him that rhetorical question. Clearly a replacement seat costs just a bit more than $10. 😂 you’ve made a very straightforward and extremely helpful video here. But there’s typically a negative Nelly in every group. Lol Be well!
Surplus Center has a catalog with all types of equipment with a lot of it being hydraulic pumps, fittings and hoses, also gears and bearings, just about everything you can think of. I just googled them and they have an online store with everything they carry. Onto the seats, after a quick search I found a couple of lawnmower seats from $29.00 to $39.00 dollars, that was under two minutes. You might find something cheaper with a better search, it’s more expensive than your spray on repair but it’s also going to last more than the two months that your repair didn’t make. It will look better and probably last 2-3 years even being stored outdoors. You should request a catalog, they’re fun to browse through, or just google them and type in what you’re looking for.

Great video. Question: If the seats are left in the hot sun, does either of the coatings soften and stick to pants?
They both were a bit tacky in the direct sun, but I never noticed any coming off on my clothing.
