how are people gonna try to tell you, you don’t know what rhetoric is?? you studied it?? people have a whole lot of nerve online. always excited to see a new video from you 💖
I really wish that people would realize that words used in academia do not have the same definition for laymen in regular conversation. For example, "theory" in science has a wildly different definition than how normies use it.
FYI when JoJo first came out she said that she didn't like labels but if she had to use one then she would say pan. After that she would just say gay or queer all the time. These days she does identify as a lesbian though she does still say gay quite often.
I find it interesting how Austin Green seems to be doing the same kind of content as Nick Green while approaching with less of his own thoughts and opinions attached. I wonder what their discussions about youtube looked like behind closed doors
She should have just pivoted instead of doing a full rebrand. Like “he guys, I’m a grown up, but still a silly and colorful”. She’d still be cringe, but it probably would have gotten less negative attention
Part of me wants to believe she'll grow up and change for the better because she's only 20. Granted, 20 is /not/ a child and, and she is certainly old enough to be held accountable for the shitty things she did/is doing. At the same time, I'm so damn glad the worst and cringiest parts of my teenage and young(er)-adult self are mostly gone or were never documented. I'm also very glad I didn't have to become an adult so publicly. Especially a queer adult in my first relationships. We had social media in 2009, but a lot has obviously changed. Also, the way people act when a child star doesn't want to be a child forever has always pissed me off. I don't know. We'll see.
jojo rebrand and camilla cabello nrw hyperpop-ish era are suoer baffling to me because they both have the money to hire PR / marketing people who are good at this sort of thing... there are celebs who successfully reinvented themselves, like you have the reality star to home decor pipeline lmao. let alone popstars with different eras. i do feel tinge of sympathy for jojo bc every adult around her seems terrible and she doesn't know life where she's not rich and famous. people like her should try to move to a country where no one knows them and live there for a year like a regular person. factory reset
I think your final point is very strong. IMO the best thing Lindsey Lohan did for herself was move to Dubai. She still had press/drama etc but it was SOOOO much less than back in the USA. I think a “sabbatical” would be great for Jojo because she’s never really known normality.
i'm studying to be an ECE in Ontario and all of my professors have stressed that if you have social media, keep it on private mostly to protect yourself!
I feel like that comment is the Dunning-Kruger effect in action lol. Having surface level knowledge makes you feel more knowledgeable on the subject than a deeper understanding of it. Also, as someone in STEM I’m tired of people pretending like the humanities fields are easier to understand! You couldn’t pay me to write an essay lol, I’m so bad at it even though I excel at technical writing. People have different strengths in different areas and it doesn’t have an impact on their intelligence or knowledge.
yes!! also in STEM, and i actually find it easier because it deals with more more logical (i’m in the math/compsci area) and practical knowledge. i love the humanities, but a lot of it is open-ended and my autistic brain doesn’t naturally gravitate to it. every field has its own challenges!
Just an FYI, this video did NOT appear in my subscription feed at first. I first noticed it and had it recommended to me on the home page (not in the subscription feed!) when it was like 14 hours old.
It's a reach but her videos on YT shorts appeared so much frequently with Hazbin Hotel Poison shorts that I'm not entirely surprised if she got some of the choreography inspiration from Angel Dust. So feel free to add that to the list of "inspirations" she took. Including Kiss, Kidz Bop, Miley Cyrus, (insert long list of iconic pop and rock stars who are/were gay).
Jojo has no real sense of self. She’s surrounded by yes men and has been playing the same character since childhood. She’s loudly distracting us from XOMG scandal.
Actually Gaga WROTE a lot of those songs you’re talking about. Sometimes she did the original demos for them as well. But typically in those cases they were never going to be “her” song, the demo was just to give an idea of what the person who would later get it would need to sing. Gaga wrote for sooooo many of y’all’s favs before she got big.
4:00 I have a degree in maths. And people always assume I must know everything related to maths (so quite the opposite to your experience?). But also, what is math? Yeah, your question will keep me up for a few hours 😂
As a fellow wlw (to Jojo) i would actually have died if my cringey relationships in my late teens/early twenties were this public. For all of this 'drama' and cringefest from the public I have tried to ignore it because she's been put down her entire career (made fun of for the kid pop stuff, etc.) and it's so hard to know if some people are just dogpiling on her and if they have never interacted with young queer people before. She's brave and she's bad for hanging out with freaks, but I don't know if this would happen with the straight girls doing similar rebrands
Not to say that there's not overlap, but straight (or "straight passing") girl celebrities have definitely gotten backlash for their rebrands and relationships. Miley Cyrus is one particular example. Also, the most famous example, Britney Spears.
there is genuine impact that Jojo is queer, however every female presenting child star has this issue when they “rebrand”. Recently Olivia Rodrigo who was a disney kid got backlash because she no longer caters to a child demographic. In the early 2000’s christina aguilera and britney spears were ripped to shreds. Miley Cyrus the second she wasn’t squeaky clean and acted similar to a regular teen faced backlash. I don’t even think people have an issue with Jojo being sexy, they just think she’s cringe, and that she plays a part in exploiting kids (XOMG) and hangs out with weirdos (Colleen, Shane dawson)
I read Jesus and John Wayne because of you!!! Easily one of the most thought provoking, insightful reads on the rise of virulent structural evangelicalism, and an incredible examination on how evangelical christian figures employ rhetorical tactics to incite support and change societal perspectives. I always look forward to your videos and find your breakdowns so astute.

Hi Mika, you said the "Israel-Palestine conflict," whereas I would say it as a genocide of the Palestinian people. I know this is not the topic of the video, but I wanted to ask why you used the word conflict instead?
I was saying that when you work with schools and places like that, people are very quick to respond badly to opinions about it. I do believe that it is in fact a genocide against Palestinians
When you read things you do it a bit too fast and too flat- therefore making some mistakes as you read, and making it really hard to follow. My brain tunes out when you read.
Honestly when you read from the textbooks I don’t process 99% of what is said until you explain it in plain english😂 I think you do a great job and it’s obvious you know what you’re talking about

I have no doubt they looked up “rhetoric” in the dictionary, and thought that information meant anything
they probably think rhetoric is only ethos, pathos and logos
Reminds me of the dude on Twitter who mansplained vapor or whatever the hell to a literal astronaut and physiologist.
I really wish that people would realize that words used in academia do not have the same definition for laymen in regular conversation. For example, "theory" in science has a wildly different definition than how normies use it.

Yes especially as her costume for performing at a Pride event looks like a typical JoJo costume colour wise, just with less material.
