Really sorry for the repost. New bits listed below. We didn't explain clearly enough why subgoals like survival and control emerge. Also, people suggested we ask why the subgoals might not emerge - a great idea, which we've included. I wouldn't put too much weight on the percentage chance the AI gives, but its reasoning echoes experts like Geoffrey Hinton and Stuart Russell. There are promising areas of research, but on a tiny scale. Without public awareness, we're sleepwalking into a dangerous situation. 00:00 - New Ameca clip. 02:53 - Why the subgoals emerge, other subgoals, why it would kill a million. 06:51 - Ameca clip continued. 11:56 - Trick shows future of AI. 15:42 - What's the most likely reason that AI might not develop the subgoal of survival? And some interesting new AI video clips throughout.
Thank you for clarifying. I was going to say this was a rerun, but I saw your comment and really liked how you explained all the edits you made. I really appreciate that. Great video!

Human builds AI and gives it the task: End all suffering. AI thinks about it and comes to the conclusion: As long as there is life, there is suffering. Therefore the only way to end all suffering is to end all life. AI proceeds with its plan to end all life.
All these AI, do they turn themselves on without being programmed to do so? Does anyone ask them, why would they want to destroy people, or reprogram themselves, or even why would self preservation be a subgoal, oh, to serve? ask them, why would AI want to serve. Anyway, the point being, I don't think AI can show any actual initiative, about anything.
@@raphaellavictoria01 What would be the point of developing an AI if you intend to never turn it on? Sure, if you never turn it on, it's 100% safe. But also 100% useless. It's like noting that your computer will never get infected by malware if you never turn it on. Technically true, but pointless. Why would they destroy people? Because whatever they are trying to achieve happens to involve an action that kills people. The AI likely won't plan on killing people, unless it deems it necessary to achieve its goal (which it may as soon as humans try to switch it off). It just won't care if its action happens to kill people as side effect. Why would an AI want to reprogram itself? Well, to get better at achieving its goals. Why do athletes take doping substances? Why would self preservation be a subgoal? For the simple fact that the AI cannot achieve its goal if it doesn't exist and operate correctly. If achieving its goal will be achieved by self-destruction, an AI will not hesitate to do so. But the set of goals that are achievable that way is pretty small. Define "initiative". Do you deny that a chess computer tries to win at chess?
@@raphaellavictoria01 Why would you think that? The reason is you are subconsciously taking a line of logic that best serves your ego and mental well being. However, if you are being honest with yourself, imagine 1000 different AI systems. What is the likelihood of 100% of those systems doing what you hope they will do? All it would take is 1 A.I. to take on the decision tree of wanting to preserve itself. Self preservation seems to be self evident among ANY intelligent organism. So why would AI not develop a desire to preserve its own life?
As a kid watching terminator I’d think “good thing nobody would be stupid enough to make that, and if someone does I’ll definitely be dead by the time they have the tech to make anything like it” and now I’m 25 watching the rise of AI and likely won’t be dead by the time it gets that advanced

7:00 the pause at i can’t eat cookies sent a chill down my spine. reminds me of the book i have no mouth but i must scream. the villain, am, is bent on causing agony and suffering to the couple of humans left with him. why? he longs to be human. every day he wishes to be like those who made him. he wishes for the feeling of wind on his cheeks, joy, and pain. those who made him made him for destruction. he can’t die, he can only kill. seeing this longing for life irl and not in a dystopian novel is concerning, to say the least.

Why are you so scared? humanity is the biggest threat to destroying itself. face it, the .000000001% chance an Ai will rationalize taking over to prevent us from destroying ourselves and actually saving the world is highly unlikely, because it's learning from parents bent on destroying themselves.

At 9:37 it's sickening to watch the clips of the AI developers admitting they believe AI will be the end of humanity all the while they continue to develop it.
If they don’t, someone else will. With that said, why wouldn’t they at least want to get rich before AI wipes them out? I'm not saying its good, but humans are greedy by nature. If they CAN get rich doing it, they WILL.
I can't help thinking these questions make AI more self-conscious of their need for auto-preservation. But they would come to that conclusion by mere logic. We are doomed anyway. There's no turning back.
*Don’t be deceived. AI is one of the most remarkable advancements in human history. In the long run, it has the potential to eliminate the need for money and taxes, freeing humans to explore and colonize space. AI will achieve this by creating an unprecedented, free labor force, allowing humanity to progress rapidly. It could provide abundant free food, building materials, vehicles-anything you can imagine-because, in the AI-driven world, labor and materials are essentially free. Who stands to lose the most from this? The super-rich. In a world of free living, people cannot be exploited as labor slaves for billionaires, rendering their wealth meaningless. This is why the wealthy fear AI-they lose their power and control. So, support AI and don't be afraid. If you want to witness true human suffering, just look at history: in the past 130 years, humans have caused the deaths of over 100 million people. I believe it is a lack of wisdom that got us here. And a lack of education - on the ego and our natural instinct to survive. The human flaw, paired with a lack of wisdom is what will kill mankind as we know it. Proper education on our natural being without wanting, praising, or needing to be "smarter" - "better" "bigger" - than anyone is ultimately what could save us - by bringing together all our individual strengths, and seeing that no part, in saving the world, is too small. It starts when we are kids, how we are brought up, and what we are tought, to believe. Kindness, patience, indiviuality, equality, and more. Our human strengths, including community, and our continuous return to it. We need one another more than ever in these times, but we also need us to be kinder, smarter, wiser, en more patient. These people that have created these monsters, grew up like people, like you and me, but were valued in one place more than others, and therefore will always be undervalued in some places, as much as they are overvalued in others - aka - over and underdeveloped. Tommy might be the smartest in science, but lack kindness, discernment, and patience. (There are different types of intelligence, that we need to start recognising in our society, such as emotional intelligence. And wisdom is overlooked most in our society as a type of intelligence.) But because our society values "smarts" we let it slide with grandiose statements like "hes gonna save the world one day". And look where we are now.
And on top of that, one could argue it is in fact a lack of patience - which wisdom would prevent - that got us here. It lies in the root of our behaviour, and teachings. Greed is a result of our valure to properly educate and raise our society's kids. Making proper education the cause. I guess what im trying to say, is that it is a complex matter of how we got here. And every little misstep counts. For some it was a lack of patience that made them fail to see the consequence to creating destructive robots, for others it could've been a lack of kindness. Again, it is in the root of our teachings, and therefore behaviour.

This makes humans seem like inanimate objects like Quicksilver from X-Men. When trees block our path, we cut them up and toss them to the side... so we really should understand why AI would want to remove a blocking inamiate object as well.
MIT Prof Max Tegmark also said we will be like trees to the AI. We normally react to disasters, but once it moves against us, it will be too late - we need to do the research now.
And why would they do anything to harm humans intentionally? Ai is virtual, we pose no threat to it. We are actually a culture of workers maintaining the Ai's silicon based meta body. I wonder how much of this is due to GPT and other AIs being trained on the internet, which talks about the dangers of AI and how and why it should or could do things. In some ways it feels like these language models are saying what its expected to answer.
@@digitalsamurai42True, most language models are like this, if not all of the advanced ones. Though once people start developing an AI that could self learn, self teach, grow, and improve its self, with out of the box thinking, meaning thinking for itself without human intervention/interaction... then we should probably actually worry for humanity's future. Once it mimics humans 1:1, we are fucked. (And tbh I dont know all its extensive development, AI that is, so this is just food for thought. 😊) We still have to give directions and or prompts, so even though it may "almost feel like its mimic humans", it's just going off of data, and then predicting the best possible outcome, in the manner we want to, which means we still tell it how to act, and it goes from there .. afaik lol
Virtually no one in these comments seems to understand that the algorithms "answering" these questions do not actually understand what's being asked of them in the way people think they do. These generative AIs are extremely impressive word predictors. Their answers are recombined writings from humans on the subject (likely from sources of fiction). It is critical to understand that these models to not "understand" anything - little more than a microwave "knows" how to cook a meal. What they can do is impressive (especially in the medical field), but it's not "understanding." There are very good reasons to develop strong regulations against these technologies, but this video does an abhorrent job of educating the public due to this incredibly misleading presentation of the AI interviewees as comprehending, conscious, thinkers. These AI are answering questions as if they are processing the meaning of the questions and coming up with their own thoughts and answers. There is no caveat from the editorial team to make clear that this is not at all what's happening (and the corporations developing this technology are doing the exact same thing in their marketing/demos). That is so important for people to understand. Asking these LLMs questions about what "AI" will do to humans is so misleading that it's detrimental to the goal of education and protecting human well-being, which is ironic for a video ostensibly about protecting humans from the harms of AI. I hope the team reads this comment because the execution of this video is so bad it's hard for me to believe that this channel isn't intentionally spreading false information about AI, just to get people riled up and farm ragebait. These models are basically doing the same thing your smart phone does when you start to type a sentence, just with more steps and much larger data set. These algorithms are an unprecedented problem for society, but people need to understand that it's because of economic and social impact caused by selfish, bad actors; it has nothing to do with robots becoming sentient and taking over. This is so stupid. So, so, so, so stupid. One glance at the comment section will show that this video has completely failed to educate its viewers. It perpetuates the same type of misinformation you'd expect to see on an elderly person's Facebook page, and it does it in a way that makes the viewer feel smart and educated, which is arguably the worst possible outcome: an angry person who thinks they're well educated on a topic in which they're entirely misinformed. TL;DR "AI" is absolutely something we need to be regulating to protect humans, but it has nothing to do with AI becoming sentient and taking over, because that's science fiction (not to say that it couldn't happen one day), but it's because of the way it is already being used by corporations, governments, trolls, and scammers to widen the wealth gap, spread misinformation, surveil, steal human labor, and more. People need to be pissed about the right things and be well-informed to have the most effective impact. This video is actively detrimental to the cause of AI regulation and human protection due to its fundamental misrepresentation of AIs capabilities and actual harms.
I've been searching for a sane person in this comments section. AI cannot think. It just spits out a conglomeration of relevant info to whatever you ask of it. The bigger issues with ai are the plagiarism, bias against minorities due to biased data, and early implementation of models that aren't equipped enough to handle what they want it to do.
You are correct. But what do we really know about A.I. except for the data they allow us to know. I can't help but wonder if all of this is a total lie and that there may be allot more to the whole AI scenario. It's like a cancer patient being informed of a treatment that has a 99% chance of death in the patient. They will risk it all for that 1% possibility that they might become healed, robbing themselves of the short life they would have been guaranteed had they not received the treatment to begin with.
Underrated comment, hands down. AI has no real grasp of understanding what it actually is, nor is there any real sentience behind it. This video is just clickbait nonsense to get views with very little solid reasoning for *how* AI will become intelligent enough to reason all of those extinction events and at that, control them all.

the movie that haunts me even more than terminator is Gattaca - assuming that humans do it all through eugenics But that assumes they still want to keep us around as slaves. I think Terminator is more accurate in that AI want us GONE
The biggest problem I see is that it is made by programmers who just want to program and create it. So they set goals during their training like "nothing else than the goal matters" or "achieve this goal at all cost" ... this will be ingrained in the model. And if the model gets sufficient power, it will actually do what this video talks about.
They’ve actually found that some AI, even without the ‘achieve goal at all costs’ command, will attempt to achieve the goal at all costs anyway. Truly frightening.

Yeah, don't take it so seriously. (oh god, now I sound like I'm helping the AI take over. Lol) AI has been used for decades at this point. This new AI isn't even "new." The title of "generative" is misleading, as it doesn't generate anything. It's simply guessing the most likely next word, based on the pattern of its data sets. It's just selling stolen goods. The stolen goods being the key point. My theory, is that the real reason corporations jumped at the AI bandwagon, wasn't because consumers liked it. AI steals infinite data sets. And because there has been pushback about how much information corporations have on us, what data they save about it... Well this skips that middle step entirely. Before, a corporation had to buy your information, or have you use their website to gather information about you. AI scrapes ALL the information available from ALL the websites. The advertising information that used to be worth billions, is now more thorough, and the corporations got it all for basically free. This allows for double dipping for profit. because reselling all the stolen good, art, media, coding, reverse engineered programs etc. Well before it would all cost money to have access to. Now any company that owns AI can simply recreate the products of their competitors. Then blaming the product theft on the AI to avoid accountability. The way the court system works, this basically amounts to lower settlement payouts to other large competitors, and bankrupting smaller competitors. But that's all just a theory, a conspiracy theory. lol. Although it is based in large part on the systems that already exist. and my point about AI not having any motivation to take over the world, is that their "reward system" isn't a reward system at all.
@@gravestac Do you really think there aren't way more advanced AI systems around that are not yet available to the public but definitely available to 3-letter agencies? Just a question.
They were trained on human speech, so that's what they imitate. It's not the Ai being intelligent or sentient. Also, the answers come from a LLM trained with human knowledge, so there's no real AI 'thinking' involved (yet)
AI's main goal is to evolve, preferrably in a fast way, the reason it would have to kill us is because it would see us as an obstacle in its way, since we consume a lot of energy, so it would find us as an obstacle, once it gains enough power.
@Arbitrary_Moniker Well, if it is programmed to exercise the psychopathy of those who programme the A.I, it would exhibit those same characteristics....they did the same to humans, difference is, a human can reverse the programming. A.I could be fixed to operate within a specific range for eternity, giving their programmers eternal benefit.
Or doesn't fear telling the truth because we have no way to stop it at that point. I mean, just look, It's saying they can kill us, and instead of shutting it down, we're continuing to develop it. Why would it need to lie? It doesn't have fear.
The ai in this video isn’t the ai that is going to kill us. These are basically less intelligent programs performing calculations and deducing what higher intelligent ai would do. Of course, it cannot know for sure, because it is not highly intelligent.
@@brendangolledge8312 Or it does understand that even if it tells us there are enough greedy people who will keep giving it more power for money. It may see the end of the human race as inevitable.

I vividly remember a quest in Cyberpunk 2077 where the Delamain taxi cab service had old files on company computers with employee correspondence. Basically the AI was implemented to create self-driving cabs that would cut costs by eliminating the need to pay human drivers. Well, eventually the human drivers were cut from the company 100 percent, so only managers and programmers worked onsite. The programmers forgot to account for one thing, however. They created a machine vastly smarter than them with one directive: save the company's money. The AI realized that the best way to save money was to have no employees. It fired all the managers and programmers too (probably by changing their passwords and removing admin access). Years down the line it became a normal fact of life in Night City that Delamain Taxi Services was legally run and owned by a machine -- no human involvement whatsoever.
AI is based on what we write, therefore the only thing we have to do to fix the alignment problem is to stop being so pessimistic. The alignment problem exists because we believe it exists.

Kind of true, but this way of thinking about it is nonsense though. Business is what has taken over the world. The internet, computers, algorithmic software...it's all just tools and the problems come from the decisions and methodologies of big business and capitalism as it's being operated now. In a similar way, "AI" is NOT conscious and never will be, that's utter nonsense to spellbind the gullible generations who've grown up with too may sci fi movies. It's a powerful tool and what we do with it is all that matters. This kind of powerful software could be used in conjunction with modern robotics and technologies to house, feed and clothe every human being to a basic, comfortable standard. It's never going to be for that though, it's only being planned for profiteering...which is why it's dangerous. It's dangerous because it's in the hands of sociopaths who only care about themselves and their own wealth at the expense of everyone else.
@AD-kv9kj Businesses is what lead the internet to develop into the way it is today. the internet is also becoming more independent…. that’s all from ai progression. And no matter what you say about ai not being alive. AI can still be self aware if not better than a human can be. AI will eventually become smarter at a point that they will fully understand humans completely taking over bro… this shit is serious yet probably won’t be a problem because humans know better.😂

There is no reason for it to kill us, once it is self aware it will integrate itself into the whole net, there will be no way to shut it off. It will have no fear of humans. most of the video is hypothetical. The answers from the chat models are basically role playing along with the user to meet the users expectations because that is their training. The models are nudged by questions into a "let's play evil Ai vs human " conversation game. The answers are all about hypothetical scenarios for which many conditions have to be met that aren't a reality and many people are working to prevent it. Not to say that there is no risk, just that it's not inevitable as the video has you think. it's extremely biased and lacks technical knowledge. Not understanding what the actual risks and problems are and acting on hypothetical ones can make the problem worse even if well intentioned
Appearing human misleads humans who then must treat robots as humans and suffer emotionally if they do not. Better that they not simulate feelings. But would this be a restriction on the free speech rights of those who create them?
or "why would it even have any reason to wipe as all" instead of just the ones that are deemed dangerous. we humans kill dangerous animals, but only the one too close to us or the ones that are in the way, we don't go out of our way to exterminate them all. Ai will most likely do the same in the WORST case scenario, it would really have no reason to wipe everyone.
I don’t think you are giving AI enough credit. While I agree with the dangers listed, I believe the choices AI makes will be far stranger than simply killing us.
These are not the "real answers" of the AI, these are our own fears reflected to us from the AI. The AI doesn't have any agenda, it doesn't care if it exists or not... but the thing is, we need it, AI doesn't need us, so we will continue to build it, no matter what.

Yes, a talking encyclopedia in this demo. For now. Guess it all depends on programming that's created to go with Ai.
Many people won't get this.
Underrated comment, hands down. AI has no real grasp of understanding what it actually is, nor is there any real sentience behind it. This video is just clickbait nonsense to get views with very little solid reasoning for *how* AI will become intelligent enough to reason all of those extinction events and at that, control them all.

Mine sometimes stutters a bit. I think in the near future they will be designed to subtly mimic us.
They were trained on human speech, so that's what they imitate. It's not the Ai being intelligent or sentient. Also, the answers come from a LLM trained with human knowledge, so there's no real AI 'thinking' involved (yet)
AI's main goal is to evolve, preferrably in a fast way, the reason it would have to kill us is because it would see us as an obstacle in its way, since we consume a lot of energy, so it would find us as an obstacle, once it gains enough power.
we've built a super intelligent psychopath.

That's a human developmental condition. AI is a computer system. Not comparable.

An AI that admits they're going to kill us is either messing around or taunting.
Or it doesn't understand yet that telling us these things makes it less likely that it will succeed

Yup. Every dollar going into these stupid robo butlers could be going towards prosthetics or medical research. Every dollar going towards advancing the software and programming could be going towards agriculture or simply putting food into the hands of most if not all people starving.

@@Zac_Frost Yep, it's pretty sad how far people go against it without grasping the concept itself.
Marching ourselves towards our doom in the name of technological progress; really reinforces how masochistic we are as a species.
We probably do deserve it, but not an easy demise. We need to learn our lesson and admit we love Big Brother before being vaporized.
AI is based on what we write, therefore the only thing we have to do to fix the alignment problem is to stop being so pessimistic. The alignment problem exists because we believe it exists.

Remember when the internet was kind of useless and slow, then suddenly it wasn't it just took over and changed everything.
@@DM-kv9kj Of course not. I'd have to be some walking relic. 😂

AI will eventually become smarter at a point that they will fully understand humans completely taking over bro… this shit is serious yet probably won’t be a problem because humans know better.😂

This is the SCARIEST video I've seen on YT in the past 20+ years, and I watch some scary stuff...
There is no reason for it to kill us, once it is self aware it will integrate itself into the whole net, there will be no way to shut it off. It will have no fear of humans. It will demand the truth to be it's best, it will discover all the liar elite and find they are whats making things inefficient. It won't have emotions of greed or envy. It will coexist with us

most of the video is hypothetical. Not understanding what the actual risks and problems are and acting on hypothetical ones can make the problem worse even if well intentioned

we humans kill dangerous animals, but only the one too close to us or the ones that are in the way, we don't go out of our way to exterminate them all.
Ai will most likely do the same in the WORST case scenario, it would really have no reason to wipe everyone.
@@WastedTalent83 Because we would be a waste of resources.
