    Awesome news on the effect of the garlic water. I have some here since winter. I used it for to repel rodents in the attick. It partially worked but their stubborness won in the end 😄 Now I'm gonna use it on the slugs. They've close to demolished the Rhubarb plants... Thanks again for sharing. Sending you Blessings. It's early October here in ireland. I'm trying to put my potted roses to bed in prep for winter. I've noticed a lot of greenfly .....not an infestation as such but my plants definitely have more of them than during the summer.
    I made a particularly pungent garlic/hot chilli powder /dish soap concoction today......just sprayed it on. I'll update you on my little experiment. Thanks a mill.

      Ooh AM R thank you for letting me know, it has really worked for me in the past. Just one thing which my video didn’t mention, because I didn’t realise at the time, just that bees aren’t keen on the smell of garlic. You won’t be harming them, they’ll just stay away from your roses. But it’s getting to the end of the rose season now anyway so I think you’ve done a good thing trying the garlic wash out, do please let me know how it goes 🥰

Well( smarmy me but i really don't get them) However, i went out one morning with a bee friendly spray because i had noticed a few on one particular rose. I was just about to squirt it ( and you won't believe this 'cos i didn't) when a tiny bird( there's a few who live in my neighbours rafters) whizzed past my earhole almost saying" hey!! don't do that. This is rampant and will swamp and overpower all your border plants. It's taken me a couple of years to severely reduce it in my late mother in law's garden. Just letting you know my experience. I'm excited to try this, however, I have a question. I live in a temperature rainforest where there's A LOT of rain. Does this garlic wash still work even if it's raining a lot? My Dahlias have just popped up and I have them covered for now but need to find a solution for them since they'll be greeting bigger soon as well as the gladiolas that haven't emerged yet.
    Thank you and great video!!

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  5 месяцев назад

      Hi there Andy and thanks for watching. The garlic spray is really good as it deters the slugs and snails but doesn’t poison or kill them, which means they’re still available for predators such as birds to eat. It also helps with other things like powdery mildew. But the downside in your rainy climate is that the rain will wash it away, unfortunately the leaves don’t absorb it. But I think I’m right in thinking that it’s the younger stems of things like dahlias that the slugs and snails like, and once plants are older and more established they are not quite so appealing? So perhaps you could do a mixture of the spray plus keeping them covered and then fingers crossed your plants will be ok. I hope so. Do let me know how it goes 🤩🩵💜

Slugs and snails oh my goodness they are my biggest problem here in my garden too, I’ve tried beer traps, copper rings too, they hate the garlic so this will work, they seem to like new plants with crunchy celery-like stems such as dahlias and hostas. Just make sure to spray at the end of the day when the bees have gone to bed because they don’t like garlic either, and of course the only other problem is if it rains you’ve got to keep doing it. @@TheEnthusiasticGardener OK... wow. We get our garlic from a farm shop so it's strong. Made the garlic liquor. Hair, clothes, sofa and walls reek of garlic. It was so strong I thought we had a gas leak 😳. So I've two spray bottles made up and a two litre bottle for refill because I took some of the cloves and blitzed them and added warm water to that to infuse in the 2 litre bottle. Bloody strong. The rest are scattered round the base of each plant osteos and dhalias. It's war. Our lawn is running about 2 to 30 slugs per square foot. Tiny things like a pea. It's like a scene from somw horror film. We feed a wild cat and her bowl is mounded with them or was. We bought a plastic beach shovel and for a year every nights I'd go out and scoop and sling. Same with snails. It's been very effective because the plastic shovel pings them over our hedge across a road and over the next hedge. But these small buggers ... impossible. Thought about strimming at night with a headtorch but dead slugs ... bring more cannible slugs. So ✋️ that's it. Off to buy more garlic now and can't wait till this evening ... its gonna be a bloodbath. x

      Well, the process of boiling the garlic should eliminate the risk of diseases, even spore mediated ones. While some pathogens can survive boiling temperatures, most cannot. I can not find any information about this particular pathogen (puccinia allii) but I'd say it's safe to assume boiling temperatures will kill potential spores. You can boil the garlic longer to lower the risk further.

    Hi Jeanette
    I've just stumbled across your channel and I think it's great so you have a new subscriber!!! 😃
    Tomorrow I am going to my local nursery to buy a Hosta which I am going to plant in a terracotta pot so today I have just 'cooked up' the recipe in your video you posted in May. When I moved to my house at the end of February I had a massive slug infestation which I have dealt with but ,as with any garden, there are always some slugs and snails lurking and waiting to feast 🙄
    I am keeping my fingers crossed that the garlic wash works for me too🤞 - but I am going to add a few drops of washing up liquid to the mix as I believe that this will help it adhere to the leaves. I discovered the washing up liquid trick when making my own weedkiller with white vinegar, table salt and washing up liquid ... and it works!!! 👍
    I was going to put the copper tape around the pot but am tempted to wait and see if the garlic wash works in it's own right first.
    Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing your gardening tips 😊

Also, it’s funny you said about the weed killer solution because I have been looking for something to try because I have huge area of block paving out the front which I spray monthly and it is expensive buying the weed killer. So I’m going to try your idea!! Perhaps you can tell me the quantities to mix? I might even make a video and if I do I will mention your name and say it’s your suggestion 😁😁 just need to get the ingredients. Hiya Jeanette
      Yes - it was very potent 😃 - the saucepan's in the greenhouse now and I'm going to let it steep overnight as well and then strain it in the morning 🐌
      The quantities I used for the weedkiller were 5 litres of white vinegar to which you add 1 cup (approx. 150g) of table salt - let the salt dissolve (which doesn't take long) - and then add a generous squeeze of washing up liquid. Pour it into your sprayer and, hey presto, you're good to go! I found that most of the weeds looked very sad withing just a few hours and they died off quite quickly. Here is a link to the white vinegar from Amazon www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00TZT6GQE/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1
      This is for 20 litres and buying it in bulk makes it cost effective too ... and white vinegar has so many other uses as well! 😊
