this version is so great. less innocent, more unsettling. the vocal treatment and the extra guitars in it...man, i wish there were more Syd treats that would leak out (like the BBC sessions from Floyd).

Syd changed things all the time. That's the beauty. Maybe you've missed that. Plus With the jangly guitar accompaniment it could be Graham Coxon or Blur
That was quite a something. After hearing "There was king who ruled..." for 40+ years of my life, to then hear instead the opening lines from Hilaire Belloc's poem Jim. Aficionados will already know that Syd would return to the same poem for the closing track of his second and final solo album Barrett. That song, Effervescing Elephant, borrows the same octosyllabic swing and involves someone getting all eaten up.... Syd's lyrics are due to be published in 2021.
The final solo is complete!!!! I always wanted to hear what happens when it fades out; However, I realized something; this version, I believe, is talking about a burning down house of someone's childhood... And that must be what the other one is about too... It's very sad.
@@markharwood7573 The mono "Saucerful" actually sucks, that's the year the industry primarily switched to stereo. But anyway, you can find a vinyl rip of that online to download, or you can buy the Record Store Day reissue, if you are dying to hear it.
Dear Syd. I like this version better. Thanks for the other one though. That's fab also 🇬🇧 His guitar power strumming from about 2m 10s in... sounds modern. It could be Graham Coxon or Blur. Or even Johnny Marr.
+jorkanmx Hilaire Belloc was dead since about 13 years (1953) when the Pink Floyd began to record this LP (1966). If anyone is to blame it is the Hilaire Belloc estate (I don't know who it was in 1966-67) ... not the poet himself who never knew about that song. As an ardent proponent of orthodox Catholicism he would probably refused it anyways, but ... he didn't make that call.
jorkanmx weve no way other than assumptions to know if that would’ve been the case. Lets hope that the beautiful use of the work is revered and honored upon high!
I'm not sure you can blame anyone other than Barrett's lack of knowledge of copyright law. This is a cautionary tail about getting legal permission before using someone's work. This has happened before and will certainly happen many more times. And I do think this sounds better than the released version.
It's so much better than the album version. I'm not exactly sure why they didn't use it. The album version is great but there's like this random cut in the middle, where 1:54 is here. I guess they just cut out the 9-9-9 part for whatever reason or found the idea of the house burning down too "dark" or something.
They couldn't use this version because it contained lyrics from some poem, and the poet's estate didn't want to grant Floyd permission to use the lyrics.
The outro at 2.45 forms the basis of a different outro on a later (post Barrett) Pink Floyd song, Remember A Day - featured on the Relics LP. The nostalgic.remembering childhood lyrics were heavily influenced by Barrett. The bands later works are so littered with Barrett influences its as though he never left the band.
When i first listened to this version, I thought it was a parody song of the original Matilda Mother, due to Richard Wrights voice sounding different and the unusual initial lyrics. But when I heard Syds voice I knew it was the real deal. And man, is this the superior version by far. Although the album version is quite good, it makes you wonder how much better The Piper at the Gates of Dawn could have been if Syd had more control over the production. Other versions of Flaming, The Gnome and The Scarecrow seem to confirm this...
They should still be on youtube, which are usually labeled BBC version. Unless i'm mistaken, they haven't been taken down. I would definitely recommend listening to Flaming BBC, it's really fantastic.
this is interesting, i would mix and match based on personal preference haha this version’s first verse album’s version second verse this version for the rest with the chorus’ on this version
I hadn't deciphered 'scribbly black' before. The music track is identical, I think, apart from the long fadeout? Excellent - must go and read more of the Mojo Syd edition now!
This version sounds so much better than the original. The original just sounds like a demo when I go back to listen to it now... I love the original but this is just incredible

kind of a bummer they cut the "999" verse- I really like how it comes out of nowhere
Richard Wright's vocals are much clearer than the "classic" version but the different lyrics are jarring after hearing the others for 53 years!
wow
i prefer the original of course, but we know anything one could find about Pink Floyd AND from 1967 it's simply an automatical treasure!

He had such a lovely voice. RIP Rich. 💔
This is amazing. Far superior to the album version! A rich, full and expansive sound. When they sing “999” it gives me goosebumps.
Now so do I ...wtf?
Slices of delicious ham
Wow!! The final solo is complet!!! Amaizing Syd!! Even if his way of playing guitar is simple, it has touch, and soul, really original.
