This retort method is quite wasteful. You need (and eventually use up) the metal drums and you waste a lot of wood by using them as fuel. It does seem easier and more certain than the cone pit method (which is far more efficient) although the latter does leave some room for error.
Did the Amazonians do all these? Can I use normal charcoal which is made from old trees and wood, then do the bio part?
yes can but better to use soft wood

Hard wood take long more time to burn but is the best
