Wow - haven't heard this for a looooooooooooog time. It was so refershing in the early '70s when there was so very little else to chuckle about going on in the world.
This song came out during my senior year in high school and we sang it constantly at parties, on busses, etc. Why did Loudon change the melody in this live version? And I miss the fiddle breaks.
@twinkie57401 It's a tune by Leonard Cohen. The most famous among the dozens of covers was done by Jeff Buckley, himself the son of a great great singer songwriter . . .
You know, I grew up in Little Rock and loved this song as a kid. I even preformed it in my third grade talent show and it was a big hit with my classmates--because it is funny. Come on Loudon you had one hit song and you made fun of the people that liked it the most. THAT seems to lack intelligence to me.
Nothing better than a great song with great friends to play around a campfire getting stoned. Thats how I remember this wounderfull little dittie
I was a teen gettin hiidh and listenning to WMMS in cleveland ,ohio when I heard this song and I have loved it every since.
Our ukulele gang will be performing this song tonight at an open microphone session!! Gold!!
As someone who was born in 1969, this looms larger in my memory than one might expect.
Great song for us old timers before we kick off. Thanks for the memories.
Gawd I remember this song... reminds me of driving through the back roads of Oklahoma and Texas in the heat of Summer.
I taught it to my daughter too, and now I'm teaching it to my grandkids. Gotta continue the proud tradition of corrupting the world with funny songs.
Proud Little Rocker here! And live that song!
Great tune..Germany might not have been the best place in the world to do it,but this song makes me smile everytime I hear it..He looks fab!!!!!
My parents taught me this song. I haven't heard it in years but I think of it every time I smell a skunk.
I remember that people didn't believe me that this was a song. I got free drinks for singing this song by heart.

Arien and I would sing along on the ride back from the casino... after we had lost all our money.
I was introduced to this song by the late great Bob Collins. :) Happy bday "Uncle Bob)

I prefer the 76' Rockpalazt version, if I'd have to chose one, but nice to see someone else up something.
No. He was from Hope, Arkansas.
Didn't Jud Strunk originaly do this song waaay back in the 60's
PHAIL!
He sang a song about MacArthur in an early M*A*S*H episode too BTW.
@alphadork1 Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road is NOT a Leonard Cohen tune, and Jeff Buckley never covered it. You're thinking of Hallelujah . . .
Is this song really as old as it is?
Thinking of a politician I don't like.
+Philip Piggford for me thats all of them
Every politician
@coolahndluke so im i
The audience look like it was their pet skunk that got killed.
Actually it made it to number 16 in 1973. The germans need to be more alive than that.
"totes Stinktier" is correct
Now tell me Germans don't have a sense of humour; love the Frauleins too .......
No, Loudon's son Rufus is openly gay.
