- Students at the University of Pretoria, South Africa are up in arms over the use of Afrikaans as an official teaching language. Following days of violent protests, the university administration has reportedly resolved to conduct all lessons in English only. CCTV's Julie Scheier has the story
So English is not colonial but Afrikaans is?
Funny that boers had independant republics
i think English is a colonial language, too.
Michael Felix it is, of course.
+Amadeus190890 well the first colonist spoke dutch (afrikaans is a dialect of dutch) and after the english took over the boer kept talking their language
Not really, English is not a colonial language if you are a native speaker... Spanish is not a colonial language but an Indian one, if you are a Mexican 75% Indian blood, and you speak only a language: Spanish becomes an Indian language because your are an Indian. Of course you can call it "Latino" to soften the effect, but nothing changes
You’re protesting against an entire language because of apartheid, and then replace it with English, the language of the largest empire that ever existed.
What. The. Hell?
RKRL don’t forget they were the empire that colonized them fully
You clearly don't understand the context for why black people would prefer English to afrikaans
@David John Murray Reynolds the people who spoke Afrikaans were the ones who implented apartheid, hell apartheid is an afrikaans word in itself. The people who spoke English, particularly outside of South Africa, were against apartheid, even the white English speakers in South Africa were either remarkably less pro apartheid or even anti apartheid
Here u are posting in English
Anglo-Irish Mapping not to mention the Afrikaans were just a small group that was there that had nothing to do with English colonization
In Mexico we used to have 60 different lenguages and nobody cares about it, people can barely speak Spanish so😂😂😂😂
They should teach native languages in public schools

It kinda felt unfair to do every subject in English which is not my language and someone out there got to do it in their own language
But removing it is like taking 10000 steps backward. Why can't we learn from the past I mean yes it was sour but removing a whole language that's like wiping away the whole culture
If they do that to Afrikaans why not do it to every language
All I am saying is involve more languages into the education system
If someone can do Math,Physics,Life Sciences,Geography e.c.t subjects in their mother tongue why can't I in my own African language
It may take time but if they could do it we also can
But destroying a whole language like how dumber can you get??
You sound like you apart of the go along get along crowd that type if thinking is part of the reason why 90% of the wealth of South Africa is still in the hands of the white minority.

Like seriously 🤦🏾♀️ protest to add Zulu or something not to remove Afrikaans, you're just going to offend the people who speak afrikaans and cause chaos and I think that's one of the problems we are facing in South Africa, we are still carrying the grudge of apartheid from generation to generation. Being innovative is a lacking skill that is needed :(
It is so sad what goes on in the southern africa region in general. I mean theres apartheid scars in south africa, zimbabwe suffers economy issues and scars of rhodesia, namibia suffers with corruption and poverty, zambia is slowly becoming a chinese colony. Botswana seems to be the only hopeful place without these tensions
Germans still speak German. Should we ban German cause Hitler spoke it? How silly.
That’s so stupid. There are still way more official languages in SA that people speak. If you keep university in Afrikaans that’s disadvantaged many students. If you add More languages it’s a waste of resources.
Lol, so you're scared of offending boers? 😂😂😂
Wisest comment here - this logic of advocating for equality by taking away advantages instead of bringing those advantages to others. Instead of uplifting the poor, we want to punish the rich. The mindset of "I can't have it, so nobody else should" is ridiculous. If we want equality, should we all have 2 homes and 3 cars, or should we all live on the street? Afrikaners (and British) being able to study in their own language is a problem, but the way to fix it is not to take that benefit away, but rather give the same benefit to others. I've seen schools in the MENA region teach in English, French, Spanish, German, Hindi, Chinese, etc. while the official language is usually Arabic. Many European schools teach 3-5 languages!
AFRIKAANS WIL NEVER FALL
So uh.....how is English *less* colonial than Afrikaans???
Didn't the Brits rule literally HALF the planet at one point?
my only idea is that English is an ‘easier’ language.
They ruled the world but in a democratic way. They brought democracy, freedom and civil rights. Afrikaners were basically Nazi-friendly, and apartheid was a form an Afrikaner Nazism. The Brits were not totally perfect, but they have been the liberators of the developing world.
Yes but today when you think of english its associated with internationality ,whereas when you think of afrikaans you think of the language priviliged racist white people spoke during apartheid.
Basically everyone who tried to resist the Brits got their shit pushed in
It was more like 30%.
I've seen some dumb things in my life, but to ban a language because of it's history is just about the dumbest
Mmn depend on the context
like let's say we want to ban German language in Israel because of the Nazi, wouldn't you agree that it's ridiculous
+Kah Weng Chok
It's different still Nazis killed jews because of a party German is not synonim of Nazi.
I 'm not saying Afrikaans is evil, but to understand the things that southafricans brought this it' s important understand more the apartheid.
Then maybe we can understand the context.
The apartheid was the culmination of hundreds of years of white supremacist ideology. Sure, Afrikaans might be a symbol of that unjust system, but in the end, the language itself is neutral, it was the mentality of the people that matters.
Just like how Bernie and Trump shares the same language, but the ideology they represent is vastly different. Can you really say English language is the problem here?

I suggest you look further into Afrikaans as a language or think about it in a manner similar to English with AAVE. Afrikaans has its own set of dialects, but the one used predominantly by black South Africans is looked down upon and not "pure" like the dialect of the white people, much like how the American black accent is taught to be improper in the US. It excludes and questions the validity of generations of black culture. Because the population of South Africa is mostly black, this language spoken previously by white supremacists creates an elitist and exclusive divide between the white and black population. In that regard, the use of English is a very reasonable option.
You don't understand things, do you.

@@prodigious818 why not?
Should Zulu and Xhosa be taught as teaching languages in South Africa too?
The majority of afrikaans speakers are coloured people
Coloured people? Why are they coloured? Whites are the minority plus non native so arent whites coloured people.
@@DaddyAZTL Coloured is the official term used in South African demographic census. It refers to non white, non black tribes and non Asian. The makeup the majority of the population in the western half of the country.
@@DaddyAZTL, there's three basic racial groups in South Africa; Blacks (Negroid), Whites (Caucasian) and Coloured (Capoid). So in order to explain Capoid, go back to between 4,000-6000 years ago, the time of the African diaspora, this refers to the Negroid diaspora from the general area of the Congo today. South of the Sahara runs an arbitrary line, called the Bantu line (the primary Negroid people). North and south of the Bantu line people were different, physically (racially) and culturally i.e. north of the Bantu line wealth was measured in camels, south thereof in cattle etc. So in short lets stick to the diaspora south of the Bantu line, people moved roughly from the west to the east across Africa and therefrom south, obviously the actual migration routes were slightly more complex than that. Nonetheless, the Negroid people moved into the territory of the Capoid people (southern African people who occupied the territory roughly up to Kenya, they used to be the dominant southern African people). The African diaspora has resulted in these people being today only still present at the southern tip of Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and southern Angola). Today knows as the KhoiSan people, the Khoekhoen (KhoiKhoi) and San (Bushman) are the only living members of the Capoid race. Remnants of Capoid are still present among the Hadza of Tanzania etc, but as I explained they were basically replaced by the Bantu people during the African diaspora.
So in South Africa there's a group called the Coloureds, they include a number of 'people', including the KhoiSan (both groups and their various tribes), it also includes the Malay people brought here as slaves during the Colonial Period and prior to 1840, with the start of workers unions and segregated residential areas etc, some people at least mixed, many of whom, both the former slaves and these generally mixed groups mixed primarily with the indigenous people, i.e. the KhoiSan. So to a more or lesser degree Coloured people are closer connected to the original people of the land, the KhoiSan, even though all would not regard themselves as KhoiSan directly. Other groups will also have KhoiSan influence because of the diaspora, for ex. the Xhosa, but here they were incorporated (sometimes by force and sometimes by choice into the Xhosa community, so in other words they became part of the Xhosa, so Black).
Coloured is not mixed race, Black and White do not make you Coloured; Negroid and Caucasian equals Mixed Race not Capoid or Coloured. Coloured is an identified cultural group, strongly vested in the ways and heritage of the original inhabitants of the land, prior to the arrival of the Negroids and the Caucasians. Coloureds are an officially recognized minority with their numbers being fractionally higher than the numbers of the Whites.
Whites are roughly half-half, I would say slightly less Afrikaans speakers (or the Boers) than English first language speakers, but when it comes to the Coloureds the scales shift and yes, the majority are Afrikaans first language. Afrikaans is one language, but many will say that there are slight dialectical differences.
Many in South Africa will proudly call themselves Coloured, a distinct broader cultural group that include many specific groups, such as the Khoe and San tribes and the Cape Malay. Coloureds (sometimes referred to as Brown, especially in the Western Cape) are not Black, they're not White and they are not mixed race, thus not to be confused with POCs, the now very fashionable term from the West. A POC is not a Coloured in South Africa.
@@DaddyAZTL coloured is a broad term in south Africa who people who are mixed, sort of their version of creole. They're descendants off early white settlers who intermarried with black or cape malay women. Most afrikaans speaking are actually coloured, not white.
Yes, that is true as it was forced on us Africans, just like French, English, German,, Spanish and Dutch.
P.S. we are NOT COLOURED, which is from Latin, meaning falsely covered up! WE HAVE MELANIN which makes us Africans extremely dark to blue-black, iridescent, if from Equatorial Africa to various shades of blackness

Why not replace Afrikaans with Sign language 👁️👄👁️
The irony of everyone being interviewed communicating in English is mind blowing and strange.
This video is EXTREMELY inaccurate and biased. The real reason why Afrikaans was discontinued in South African universities is not a racist move. It was removed because it does not have the same international standing or reach such as English. Afrikaans is the home language of approximately 12% of the population. Black South Africans who make up the majority of the country mostly speak Zulu and xhosa as their home languages but in order to study they have to do so in their second language which is English. That being said the majority of South Africans are excluded by universities who have an Afrikaans language policy. Afrikaans people do understand English so it is only fair that all universities be in English in order for all South Africans to have an equal opportunity to study.
well said
That's what I was thinking. English is more inclusive. I suppose it's a hard pill to swallow when you feel that your culture is being eroded but yes I think it makes sense to make a more inclusive environment.
@@jordanforbes2557 Yeah! Like they should understand no one is taking Afrikaan from them, it's their culture. But for the good of all, if English is the most widespread and understood by all, then it's the most suitable language to be used.
As in any other multilanguage country, you can have all-afrikaans universities, all-english universities, and all-zulu universities while offering afrikaans courses in a majority english-language universities, zulu courses in majority zulu-universities etc. with all integrating options possible. This is also true for high-schools. Many States in the world have multiple levels of language-switching in the education system. The majority of Member States of the European Union use more than one language to teach at elementary, high-school, and university level.
Taking away language rights instead of organising investments to aim at augmenting them is always a bad move, because it leaves no-one happy and truly satisfied.
@@arielschant9841 I'm not sure if you are South African or not but you would not propose this if you knew the history and current state the south African education system is currently in. Historically black schools and universities have been underfunded since its inception and are unable to complete with historically white schools. What you are proposing is a segregated education system in which if you a black South African you will have to go to an under resourced "Zulu school" and attend a subpar "majority Zulu-university". If you ACTUALLY knew what you were talking about you'd know that there isn't any language that is being oppressed in South Africa. It is the former Afrikaans Universities in the country that decided to have a more inclusive language policy by phasing out a lot of their Afrikaans courses and replacing them with English. Teaching in all national languages is a bit more nuanced than people in the comments make it seem.
(I haven't seen the national budget allocation, tax rates, mean salary rates, employment and education stats, etc.. so I might be wrong. Give me some sources if that is the case.)
(Before I start you should know that there are 11 official languages in SA)
For all languages to be taught in universities while maintaining a decent quality of education, there needs to be 11 qualified lecturers that are willing to work at the salary proposed for each field. Then you would have to multiply that amount by whatever the required student-teacher ratio at the school is.
Not sure how many universities there are in SA but I assume it's at least over 20, considering its size, population and it's 3rd world status. (The amount is definitely not below 20 but I wouldn't be suprised if it exceeds 25)
You would need 11≤ qualified people for each field per school. There would also need to be an acceptable salary for these lecturers to remain satisfied and new, adequately-equipped classrooms per additional teacher to enable efficient teaching and comfortable schedules for teachers and students.
The government would be obligated to support schools in completing this initiative and national funds would have to be reallocated. The reallocation could be pretty harmful to other sectors of the economy and in order to minimize damage, the government would have to increase taxes to control the effects of reallocation.
It would also cause the current mean salary for university lecturers to drop due to the fact that budget allocation has to be changed in order to cater to the increased amount of teachers in a school. (They would be paying 11≤ different teachers for each field instead of (+/-) 1≤X
To anyone that sees the reply. In the case that the government doesn't increase taxes, it would take a loan and we all know how great foreign debt is for African countries.
Edit: It isn't great for those that don't know

It is and the fact is that its less spoken in South Africa than Afrikaans.
So is Afrikaans.
The English didn't actually do much against the Native Americans. In fact they were attempting to create a Native American Nation which was a contributing cause of the US invasion of Canada in th war of 1812 (which should really be given a proper name)
You're also ignoring the fact that the British are responsible for 100 years of relative peace ending in 1914 with the outbreak of WW1.
They outlawed slavery in 1833, they also set up the West Africa Squadron which ended the atlantic slave trade and freed 150,000 slaves.
They also established the first free colony for freed slaves and provided protection to them from renslavement.
They 'encouraged' African rulers to stop enslaving minorities to trade as slaves.
They ended the Arab Slave trade (which had lasted 1000+ years and has restarted again)
They along with Portugal the USA and several other European Nations in the Med ended the Barbary Slave trade.
They Ended the Indian Slave trade.
They destroyed the Thuggee who were responsible for over 2 million murders in India.
They are the reason India is a united nation rather than fractured like Europe is with multiple nations etc.
And lastly but definitely not least they encouraged other European powers to abandon slavery often by force and by disrupting trade of slaves as previously mentioned.
If any nation in the history of the world has don't more to ends slavery it's Britain.
