      The video recommends a size J (or 10/6.00 mm) crochet hook. Having a smaller hook can do this, as well as using thinner yarn. There are many other variables including personal crocheting style. The gauge is included in the pattern, and it could also be that your crocheting style requires a different size hook in order to meet the stitch gauge. I hope this is helpful!

    • @BonnieBayCrochet
      @BonnieBayCrochet Год назад +1

      It really depends upon your personal gauge, type of yarn etc, but you can work additional increase rounds until you reach a comfortable size for you. Do keep in mind that there will be a lot of ease built into the final rounds, so you don't want it to be too loose.

    Hello, curious question. For row 15, you're doing an increase row of 6. But the previous increase row was of 7. Just seems more of a decrease than an increase. Just seemed a little confused by this, and thought the increase would have been 8 instead of 6.

      As long as you are getting the proper gauge, it does not matter what needle size you are using. The needle/hook size is generally what the designer used, but not always what you will need to produce the same size.

      Good Morning Bonnie,
      Thank You for replying🤗
      I do like your long stocking hat.
      However, my question should’ve been.....Can I follow your tutorial to make a regular elf or Santa length hat in an adult (women’s)size? You’re tutorial is the absolute best I’ve found.
      I read my question again(far from what I meant to ask)🤦🏾‍♀️My apology for not being clear with my first inquiry.
      I’m not a professional yet, but I have made some pieces women’s hats included........Gloria

    • @BonnieBayCrochet
      @BonnieBayCrochet 5 лет назад

      No problem at all Gloria! You may be able too by skipping some (maybe half? May need to experiment a bit here) of the rounds that don’t increase stitches and get to those increase rounds sooner and more often, if that makes sense. This would shorten the hat quite a bit. Don’t start skipping the non-increase rows until the point of the hat is somewhat defined. Hope this makes sense! If not I’ll be happy to try again!😊😊😊

    • @BonnieBayCrochet
      @BonnieBayCrochet 6 лет назад +1

      I don't currently have a pattern for making a tassel, but I'm sure a few hundred others do on RUclips. Using thicker yarn would depend upon your gauge. I would personally shorten the number of stitches and rows in order to keep some drape. The number of stitches would depend upon the yarn chosen and your personal crochet style.

      Thank you for replying so quickly, i ended up purchasing a similar size yarn in ravenclaw colors so i hope it will work out. If i interchange colors to make the "gold" or in my case gray stripes thinner than the "red" or blue stripes will it affect the pattern or does it not matter??

    Hi there! I just finished up the last round before I start the brim. The circumference is only 12 inches. My stich count is correct and I used the same brand yarn as you did. I’m an intermediate crocheter and I know my stitches are even and not too tight. Since there aren’t anymore increases I can only now assume that this hat was designed for a small child? I didn’t see a description in your written pattern of the size. I thought it was an adult size since it didn’t specifically say it was for a child. I was making this for an adult and now I don’t know what to do. I’m sad that I spent all this time and I can’t even finish it or use it. And Christmas is in the morning :(

    • @BonnieBayCrochet
      @BonnieBayCrochet 2 года назад

      This is sized for an adult Kimberly. Perhaps your gauge is much tighter than mine? If the stitch count is the same, that's the only option that I can think of that caused this difference.

    • @hickster777
      @hickster777 2 года назад

      @@BonnieBayCrochet what is the circumference supposed to be? I crochet more on the loose side. I used super saver yarn and same size hook. I’ve never had a project fail. I’m not a pattern designer so I didn’t feel confident in making increases myself. I may give it a go. Does it need to end on an even or odd stitch count before adding the brim?

    The hat wasn't that hard to make. Well hardest part was the brim. My fingers don't work so well due to arthritis. This video is a keeper. I'll do it again sometime. Had another idea for this hat pattern. Adjust it to be very small. I want to make more holiday gnomes. I made one in a craft class at the senior center. It was a felt hat that was hand stitched together. Then hot glued on. A crocheted one would be very nice. Just need to find the pattern piece for the beard size.

    please be mindful that while we 'watch' your video and follow along, most of us do not have the written version in front of us to verify stitch count per round. When you got to rows 9 and 10, you didn't verify stitch count, just that it's a double crochet all the way round for both rows. Is frustrating to get to row 12 adding stitches and not having the same count. I'm having to rip it out and figure it out on my own.

      My husband now wants one so my third one will actually be in the metallic mulberry which is a darker Christmas red metallic green. He will probably get a white brim but I'm not sure yet till I get there. Might keep it just red and green.
      My fourth one I will alternate my stripes in red white and green :-) probably a white brim.
      The structure and the size of this hat are to scale! Some of them always look so strange, they're either too long/ too thin and one point maybe too thick in another and just don't look very good. Some of them are the shape of those little game pieces from the board game risk LOL! Tight and short around the head and then the top sort of squeezes at a weird angle. 🤣
