The white dot was the CRT inside your TV being switched off and nothing to do with the BBC/ITV closing down for the evening, if your TV was left on and the signal was cut then static/snow with a hiss sound (some TVs auto muted when no signal was received) would show until you physically switched the TV off then the famous dot would appear! The dot only ever appeared on our Black and White portable and not of the main colour TV!
Back when we only had 4 channels and better quality of programmes, now we have multiple channels broadcasting nothing but rubbish, thank God for DVDs, and some good stuff amongst the rubbish on RUclips,
Always stayed up for the announcement of the following weeks double bill before switching off my black and white portable TV.
Good times. In our house now the kids don’t watch any telly at all (teenagers). I put it in for 10 minutes twice a day to laugh at the newz.
I did the same also when they were then later showed on channel 4 in the 90s. Need bbc to show them all agin. But prob won’t

Used to love the close down on the BBC. Then turning off the telly until the white dot faded lol.

Do you have any 1978 Monster Double Bill intros? The Man with X-Ray Eyes continuity card horrified me back then.
