- It was a beautiful afternoon in Portola Valley, California at the home of Joan Baez. Bluegrass County Music Legend Earl Scruggs and his two sons Randy Scruggs and Gary Scruggs were traveling the country seeking out musicians who Earl admired. Earl had a vision that banjo and mountain and country music could come together with his incredible banjo style to make something new. At this time, Earl was tired of playing tunes like what he and Lester Flat did for Beverly Hillbillies (the TV series).
He reached out to musicians like Joan Baez, The Byrds, Bob Dylan and others, for get-togethers where they could make music and see what would come from it. I made a 90 minute documentary of Earl and his family while they were making this effort. This is a link to that film:
• Earl Scruggs Made This...
This scene with Joan Baez and Earl and Randy Scruggs and Gary Scruggs is just fantastic and I felt so fortunate to be there to record it. Although I was the director and the cameraman, I set up the my 16mm camera & a single Neumann microphone. We said we were ready and we started rolling.
Remember that this was a time when Joan's husband David was in prison for protesting the draft during the Vietnam War. They just birthed their sonGabriel, who is in this scene. To answer some commentators, it was not alcohol that she gave him in that glass but water.
As you can imagine, being that I am now an 82-year-old documentary filmmaker with so many films to my credit, I have recorded a lot of musicians in my day. Country. Bluegrass. Mountain music. Old Time music,. Classical. Folk. Opera. Rock 'n roll. But this moment between Earl and Joan Baez backed up by Earl's brilliant guitar picking son Randy is in a class by itself.
I would like to thank some of those who have advertised on my RUclips video. Without this support, I couldn't keep presenting my work (I'd have to do other work to make a living). They include Nothin Fancy bluegrass. Bluegrass near me. Charm City bluegrass 2023. Appalachian bluegrass music. Live bluegrass near me. Bluegrass concert near me. Bluegrass music near me.
If you found this scene pleasurable, I would appreciate your supporting my efforts by clicking the super thanks button below the video screen. Your support gives me the resources to allow me to dig into my archive for more moments in time like this one.
Thank you
David Hoffman filmmaker
Randy Scruggs is an unbelievable guitarist. His phrasing is thoughtful and restrained, and he's like 17 in this video.
Here is how to play his part

Sadly only Joan and her baby on her sister's knee are still with us. The great Earl Scruggs, his two sons playing in the clip, Joan's sister, Mimi Farina, and even the dog are all gone. RIP, Earl, Gary, Randy, and Mimi. This is a wonderful piece of film making and a beautiful piece of music.
I met Earl, Randy and Gary in Boulder 1971.
Dylan didn't remember writing this tune...Joan discovered it fallen behind his piano and made it famous... unbelievable lyrics and melody...Joan and Dylan have always been top of my list - Dylan especially - great clip 🔥
Earl Scruggs was one of the few great Nashville country artists who embraced the new music of the 60's, the youth culture, and was a visionary. Probably because of his son. He along with Johnny Cash got it. He could not deny the beauty of Joan's voice and Dylan's writing....Earl Scruggs: May His Memory Be Eternal !
I couldn't agree more. Earl Scruggs was a virtuoso banjo player who will never be forgotten.
@@mellazin5533 Scruggs was also against the Viet Nam war unlike the other Nashville rightwing republicans.
[possible] Slight correction: According to AI Steve Goodman wrote "Love is Just a Four-Letter Word" not Bob Dylan.
It took guts for ES to express his beliefs knowing it would not be popular with most of his. I have to admire him greatly for that.
@@steveralston2039 Wrong! Look it up! He wrote It when he and Joan were having their love affair ..... at her house in Big Sur....
This is the very definition of the American musical tradition. Earl not only pioneered the genre of bluegrass, he never stopped exploring and integrating the new into his playing. This is a lesson he passed on to Johnny Cash and can be seen in the latter’s “American Recordings”.
Joan is a master... she carries each word delicately with reverence... her soul and voice embodies the folk experience
While simultaneously checking out all the chord changes and structures and methods of the other musicians.
Those smiles during the Randy solo....PRICELESS.
Like yeah your kid is good , and he plays it humble on the low strings.
I think he player the lower strings because the higher strings was a little bit out of tune.
I think that Joan is surprised at how good Randy was on the guitar.
Best version ever, thanx to Earl
And thank you very very much for your work Mr. Hoffman.
"She got a certain secret in her smile
That makes you wanna stay awhile"
Only sometimes is love a four letter word..
Oh shit that sucks that uncle Randy died
Seems like only yesterday
I left my mind behind
Down in the gypsy café
With a friend of a friend of mine
Who sat with a baby heavy on her knee
Yet spoke of life most free from slavery
With eyes that showed no trace of misery
A phrase in connection first with she occurred
That love is just a four-letter word
Outside a rambling store-front window
Cats meowed to the break of day
Me, I kept my mouth shut
To you I had no words to say
My experience was limited and underfed
You were talking while I hid
To the one who was the father of your kid
You probably didn't think I did, but I heard
You say, that love is just a four-letter word
I said goodbye unnoticed
Pushed forth into my own games
Drifting in and out of lifetimes
Unmentionable by name
Searching for my double, looking for
Complete evaporation to the core
Though I tried and failed at finding any door
I must have thought that there was nothing more absurd
Than that love is just a four-letter word
Though I never knew just what you meant
When you were speaking to your man
I can only think in terms of me
And now I understand
After waking enough times to think I see
The holy kiss that's supposed to last eternity
Blow up in smoke, it's destiny
Falls on strangers, travels free
Yes, I know now, traps are only set by me
And I do not really need to be assured
That love is just a four-letter word
Strange it is to be beside you
Many years the tables turned
You'd probably not believe me
If I told you all I've learned
And it is very, very weird indeed
To hear words like forever, fleets
Of ships run through my mind, I cannot cheat
It's like looking in the teacher's face complete
I can say nothing to you but repeat what I heard
That love is just a four-letter word
I love the dog just lying there sleeping right through that beautiful song 😊🦮
kinda jealous of that dog on the floor, just soakin' it all in
We are all "that dog on the floor."
😂😂👏
Didn’t know he was experiencing a “moment”.
Didn't she try to sing this in the hotel room during that tour in England with Bob where he treated her pretty badly? I am glad he has finally addressed that! In his defense, he was going in a different direction in music and he probably was freaking out over all the adulation he was receiving.
It doesn’t get any better than this.
Man this makes me want to build a time machine and take a tour of the past eras..
Wasabitrash I hear ya Id love to just be sittin there watchin......
I was exactly thinking like this while watching it and then I found this comment... ya someone should build a time machine I guess

Earls solo is so sweet, this whole scene is amazing
It just doesn’t get any better than that!!!
There's so many positives in this video clip. First the great father and son duo playing amazing amazing music ,then My favourite Joan singing in the sofa with dog lying next to her and sister Mimi taking care of little baby. What more can you ask , all I can say that this is a gem of a video. Thanks a lot for sharing this gem with us. God bless you.
Mimi was also a gifted singer
@@janetcarlson9960 Absolutely. I love her song Pack Up your Sorrows with Richard Farina playing Dulcimer.😍😍
Wow! Once upon a time something wonderful happened in that room.
So true Dan.

such appreciation these musicians seem to have for eachother. lights up my day
I have loved this gathering and could love listening to it another thousand times..I' m in love with Joan Baez, have been since 1962
Here from Brasil I´m speechless. I´m crying. This lady has the power to reach and touch the best someone may have inside. She is simply LOVE, if one word would be able to define her. God bless you David Hoffman, for your uttermost beautiful work and for your so generous sharing.
This must be one of the best jams of all time😍😘💙💙💙💙💚💚💚💚
Who the Hell could give this a Thumbs down...
Dave Nicholas Let me guess. Hitler, Cheney, Trump, Netanyahu, or someone similar to these beasts.
Wait...I'm checking
Wingers!
This is a gem; music is incredible and Joan at her loveliest!
Gorgeous vocals and performance. A rare gem.
How Bob Dylan could write so many beautiful tunes. It's something incredible
Far, far better than the album version, with its synthesizer or whatever the hell they pasted on there.
Joan is an ET... a most beautifull ET. Ah, that voice from heaven.
This is priceless❤. Joan’s beautiful voice is a national treasure, I could listen to her all day❤❤❤❤❤
A good dose of Bluegrass helps a lot. RIP Earl Scruggs.
The bluegrass genre got a real shot in the arm when the original Country Gentlemen arrived with all their innovative ways of presenting songs never intended for such groups.Eddie Adcock and Martha are long rime friends of ours and I talked with John Duffey years ago and he told me "bluegrass:was getting stale and he knew nobody that could identify with a "Cabin in the hills"even though they did record the song.about one.The later Seldom Scene was another great and innovative group and again,John Duffey was there, front and center.
1972 Seems like only yesterday but not all the flowers are gone Joan.
I love Joan Baez so much. Such a beautiful woman and soul.
There is no better interpreter of Bob Dylan's songs than Joan Baez. This video is a real treat!.
Loved the song "Diamonds and Rust" she wrote for Dylan.
I first heard this song in San Diego on a juke box at the place where sailors changed into civilian clothes. That was in 1965 and I listen to it since. I also found a version with another verse. Love that song!
One of my favorites. Hard not to love anything Joan sings.
What an amazing majical recording. Memserizing
Mr. David Hoffman, you are so lucky and blessed to have witnessed that meeting!!! It seems too wonderful to be real...(excuse my bad english)...
Had to drop in for another spin...no one used repetition quite like Dylan...so beautiful and affective 🔥
Baez remains my standard for any female vocalist
Hard as many try, none will EVER compare to this! NO modern musician can shake a stick......
This is so sweet and tender
This is such a treat, I thought i heard every rendition of this song. And here i find this clip out of the blue.... So beautiful with the bluegrass sound!
Now I realize David that you are the maker of the great DVD "Earl Scruggs Family & Friends" with Dylan, Baez, etc. I've had this DVD for years. You were in the right place at the right time for these historic collaborations. Thanks again for your work.
David, I ORIGINALLY found "You" through this, looking for Earl Scruggs Banjo Videos, the CHERRY On Top? This of Joan and everything surrounding, especially the sweetness of Randy's engaging manner and seriousness about his special "moment." I've loved this music for so long. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Lisa Rae Rousseau 🤗💯
Can’t understand why this hasn’t been viewed in the millions!

One of my favorite songs! And what beautiful solos.
Hard to believe they can sound so good without being in a recording studio.
And with just one microphone recording. It is quite amazing.

This sounds almost miraculous. Bless Joan and her voice, Bob and his words, and all the other musicians here, whom I know a bit less 😅
Driving thru Shelby NC I think about Earl and his amazing musical career. Such a humble man who experienced such painful moments....
I can say nothing to you but repeat what I've heard...
Just love the muSic in such s homey atmosphere with Joan’s baby; sister Mimi, comfy doggie.... thanks for sharing.
Exquisite all around. Thank you.
Wonderfull, I love it !!!
My all time favorite version of this masterpiece. The forever amazing, Earl Scruggs, and his amazing talent beautifully compliment Joan's forever ethereal angelic voice. I cherish this video. Thank you for allowing us to see through your storytelling lens.
Just magical.
joan is such a sweetheart,
i wished i could hear bob sing this song
This is one of my favourites that she sang, but I'd never heard this recording, so thank you.
I bought the album when it first came out, and it's been one of my favorites for all those years. I never thought I would see any video of it. I'm knocked out. Thanks for creating it.
You are welcome Alan, and thank you. It was quite a unique moment to record.

This is something unbelievable and fantastic. So authentic, so real, with the dog and the little children and the mood "we are just playin' something little stuff" Beautiful. Mesmerizing.
I listen everyday to this. Joan is the only one left.
I love that this is so comforting, the dog on the floor sleeps right though it -- And that Earl's son gets a chance to shine. And that Joan nails it. But my favorite part is Earl's banjo solo. Keeps me coming back.
One of my favorite Dylan songs, and as far as I know Joan is the only person who ever recorded it. (He didn't even record it). The lyrics are as great as anything Cole Porter ever wrote!
I love this song and this rendition. But I can’t make head nor tail out of the lyrics beyond their being pretty and mysterious, and suggestive of a history between the writer and the woman he’s singing about. Well, maybe that’s enough.
The first verse is magical. I love to sing it
Joan Chandos Baez is my mom and she's Mrs Guinea Pig

@Olivia Baez Bless you. I have loved Joan Baez for 54 years. I got to see her in Atlanta during her Farewell Tour. She’s my soul sista. ❤️🔥❤️🙏❤️
Pure musical genius!
Wow! What a great recording! Joan's voice is like ringing crystal. And Earl Scruggs gives a wonderful added depth to the instrumental. Just a wonderful documented scene. Thank you!
man really dig that bluegrass sound, even might like it more than her actual version
I wouldn't call this bluegrass.
Video che cattura un momento musicale, e domestico, magnifico, grazie
Amazing.
Fantastic! I'm grateful you made the effort to record this for posterity. Thank you, sir.
Love Joan, always have! Gorgeous lady, such style!
Great recording, Mr Hoffman.
I'm gonna find the banjo tabs and learn this song!
RIP Randy
Damn, did Randy pass?
Earl was so cool.this is the version that i live by.thanks for grabbing these gems David.
Thank you for being the chronicler of this family's journey to help stop three of the senseless wars that the American Empire has waged. What a great moment this song brings, and you capture if for eternity.
One of my all time favorite albums :)
This is the most beautiful banjo solo I've ever heard
Love is Just a Four-Letter Word, It Ain't Me Babe, Don't Think Twice It's All Aright, All Along the Watchtower, Ballad of Easy Rider..........................same composer
Dylan had little input on Ballad of Easy Rider it was a Roger Mcquinn song.
Yeah. Great song.
Pretty good banjo player as well.
So lovely! Thanks David. This is better than the album version. I'll bet a minimum of rehearsing was needed because they were all pros, even Joan Baez. And so lovely and smiling she is as both Scruggs launch their solos.
This brief clip reinforces that were it not for people like you David, the essence of what it means to be human might well be lost on humanity.
Such a melody that captivated Earl
Good Ole' Earl Scruggs!
This is a great song, I love to sing it...❤
A home recording, yet sounds like a studio one! What a voice!
What's really awesome about this video is how great artists can just informally and intimiately get together in an impromptu everday way to create such great music. Thank you for capturing this special moment for us to enjoy!
The banjo sounds fantastic.
Que ma-ra-vi-lha!! Quando quatro grandes artistas desempenham seu papel com perfeição, acontece isso!
That is real music
Fantastic 💕 my brother turned me onto this as soon as the album came out, and I was hooked. 😊😃👍🏻
I like it when she tentatively says "I''ll try it" then immediately nails it.
Una vos increible yo naci en 1972 la escuche de chico y la voy a seguir escuchando👏👏
Melancolía pura en amor y voz, interpretación y acompañamiento sorprendente que se entraña en el ser de desea nunca dar por concluida!
Incredible how the dog lays on the floor with all the "noise" arround it.
The banjo solo is divine. Also the video quality is much better than other clips
So haben wir früher auch zusammen gespielt. Über allem die großartige Stimme von Joan Baez.
