Regarding the confusion on wtf happened, apricots (or really any fruit) can be used to tan leather, the hunter points at the leather on his belt when talking about it. So basically he's out there tanning leather, but what's implied is more important. The hunter has been going to this location for 10 years so consistently that the townsfolk made up and urban legend around his visits. I think what happened is Argus had a moment of afflatus when she reached the wall the first time and saw traces of blood from 10 years ago that she normally wouldn't see (they usually need to be recent traces). The hunter never tells the truth but I think he lost someone there and is forever reliving some mistake he made, just like Argus is forever chasing Kayla even though she knows Kayla is gone.

In it, Vertin asks Argus if she would be interested in eye treatment, but Argus refuses and notes that she'd rather be chomping on candies than getting it fixed, and that she doesn't want to pay for treatment. Based on Argus's character, it probably implies that she doesn't want any handouts as well as being resistant to getting help from others.
Personally, I think the Manus, Brotherhood or whatever it's called, were looking for a suitable vessel in this town to revive Arcana so it could be why all the girls were disappearing, but if so I really don't understand why they would target girls with brown or blonde hair specifically??
