Most definitely this little guy deserves a factory correct restoration. He served you well and anything other than factory in my eyes would be an insult to his plucky spirit. I gotta say whenever I see Oliver or hear him mentioned it always brings a smile to my face. I don't think any other car ever on "Top what was it's name?" caught my attention as much as this car did.
Honestly, I'd say keep him as he is. His rust, dents, scratches and broken bits are his history, they are what make him special. He's not just any Kadet, he's Oliver. Swap out all the old parts, refresh everything to factory new, then what is he? Just another old Kadet. Keep him in working order, but don't ultimately replace what he is.

Honestly I think that makes the most sense! Even when Richard fell in love with this car it was for how simple it was and how well it tackled Africa as a result! Think about the bmw and he Mercedes that had all their parts stripped to make them as light as possible but still kept getting bogged down whilst this plucky little thing just kept on going

The car weighs 1500lbs wet. Drum brakes are perfectly fine for normal driving with a weight that low. Upgrading to modern disc brakes aren't going to be large gains. The brakes back then were never the problem for the plucky little under-powered lightweights, the problem was the problem of all 1960s cars. Tires. They weren't brake limited, they were grip limited. The downside of drums is heat, they dissipate it badly and grenade under heavy heat load. For a daily driver they are perfectly fine. Upgrade the tires to a modern compound and call it a day, it'll actually improve brake fade. Less time braking means less heat buildup from load so the brakes will last longer.

Why did I come to this video? I had somehow missed this on Drivetribe and when the last episode of The Grand Tour (😢) neared its end, I kept wondering what happened to Oliver given that Clarkson's old Lancia and May's Merc were both there? A week later, here I am!

I have to say that Oliver was the best purchase of any the car challenge shows. His performance was incredibly surprising and I found myself rooting for the little Opel throughout the episode. I’d say he’s earned a factory fresh redo. Happy to see he’s still around 👍
The greatest car he has ever owned in history bar none, and it never failed him not once especially when Oliver endured the African salt flats like they were nothing

Totally in agreement. Changing the look of the car, customization or rally look will basically eliminate 'Oliver'. It does not have to be restored to factory condition, but just fixing the bits that need fixing will keep 'Oliver' for years to come. It is a car of its own, it does not need to be fancy or trendy, it's Oliver! Oliver who drove on terrible roads in Africa and swam rivers. It is an icon on itself.

Totally in agreement. Changing the look of the car, customization or rally look will basically eliminate 'Oliver'. It does not have to be restored to factory condition, but just fixing the bits that need fixing will keep 'Oliver' for years to come. It is a car of its own, it does not need to be fancy or trendy, it's Oliver! Oliver who drove on terrible roads in Africa and swam rivers. It is an icon on itself.
I'd only suggest one modification to Oliver, and that would be adding his name to the bodywork in similar chromed script as the Kadet on the wings.
