This is so soothing and so fitting for when reading the book of Matthew. This time of year when people are looking for something to give them peace as the year speeds to a close and a new year...new journey is around the corner....Lord thank you for your promise to be with us and never leave us. Thanks for teaching me another hymn Sis...blessings always.🙏

We search and search in vain, but the peace and joy we seek is found only in our Savior! What a gift we’ve been given, the gift of His love and His mercy!!! May the Lord continue to cover you under the shadow of His wings.

I’m enjoying learning so many new hymns I didn’t know. Thank you for doing the more obscure ones that aren’t sung frequently in church.

Oh may the Lord be praised! I didn't know the obscure ones either but I distinctly heard the Lord ask me to sing the hymnal so that anyone can learn any hymn they so choose! May the Lord give you strength and rich blessings this week @Kellye Storm.

The simplicity of hymns never fails to amaze. Their soul-cleansing power lies in a combination of things:
#1. Hymns are based on the principles of Baroque music, which was the pinnacle of music devoted solely to praising God. The melody is easy, often a catchy chorale melody which is “leading” (predictable) therefore adherents can easily sing along. The rhythm and tempo is measured (regular metre), no sudden stops like in performance worship songs but solemn and well-measured.
#2. Lyrics of these hymns are true expressions of the Protestant Reformation worldview and that of the Great Awakening in US, UK and in Europe when spiritual revival swept over the nations. The aim was two-fold, often labelled with the Latin phrase borrowed from previous ages, “dulce et utile”, meaning “sweet and useful”. What this meant was that the melodious music functioned as the vehicle to carry strong didactic elements, biblical beliefs across and etch them into the memory of the followers. Lyrics of these hymns often summarise solid biblical truths about divinity, Christian ethos, salvation, redemption, sin, morals and hope for the future. The robust teachings were boiled down to concentrated messages giving hope and guidance to millions. Each verse of these hymns expounds on different topics therefore they did not become mundane repetitions so often typical of modern spiritual songs.
#3. Finally, these songs were loved by young children due to its metrical psalm-like nature that made memorisation super easy. With the beautiful simple tune, children learnt fundamental Protestant beliefs that instilled strong religiosity and faith.
One such hymn is God Himself is with Us, one of my favourite if not The Favourite. The original hymns was composed by Joachim Neander in the 17th century. Later in the 18th century Gerhardt Tersteegen put words to this wonderful music titled Gott ist gegenwärtig.
My favourite verse: “Come abide within me, Let my soul, like Mary, Be Thine earthly sanctuary. Come, indwelling Spirit, With transfigured splendor, Love and honor will I render. Where I go here below, Let me bow before Thee, Know Thee and adore Thee.”

Thank you so much for this comment! There are so many gems in what you’ve shared. It’s so sad that we have deviated from singing hymns for worship music. I always think of how we receive and tend to squander the blessings from above. At any rate, thank you again for these words! I also believe the verse you focused on in this hymn is truly beautiful. Blessings to you!

Beautiful yet my how the words have changed!
It seems to be a thing now to rewrite the Bible as well. Meanings if passages and leaving out God's name are quite common has occured in the NIV for instance.

@@samethasuzen4071 The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a Protestant Christian denomination that originated in the United States during the mid-19th century. The church was officially established in 1863 and is known for its emphasis on the second coming of Jesus Christ, the observance of the seventh-day Sabbath (Saturday), and a holistic approach to health and well-being.
Seventh-day Adventists believe in the authority of the Bible as their ultimate source of faith and practice. They place a strong emphasis on the teachings of Jesus Christ, including his life, death, and resurrection. Adventists also believe in the concept of the sanctuary, which they see as a key biblical theme pointing to Jesus' ministry in heaven.
In terms of lifestyle, Seventh-day Adventists often practice a vegetarian or plant-based diet, avoid alcohol and tobacco, and promote a healthy lifestyle. They also prioritize education and operate a worldwide network of educational institutions.
The Seventh-day Adventist Church has a global presence with millions of members in countries around the world. Their mission includes sharing the message of God's love and hope, promoting health and wellness, and providing humanitarian aid.
