Those hops that the japanese players are doing is called the spilt step it is a common technique in different racket sports. The purpose of those steps is for the quick change of movement/direction for better positioning to dig the ball and to avoid the feet being stuck to the floor whenever the opponent tries to tip or change the direction of his/her spike. I hope this help love you videos 😍😍
That little hop is a split step. There's lots of people who talk about it in terms of the biomechanics of muscle activation (pre-loading the tendon and ligament stretch, etc), but I always thought of it more in the realm of physics. Your ability to move laterally is limited by the friction force between your shoes and the floor. More down force == greater friction force
LOVE those videos! Thanks, Erik! I remember when I was watching Japanese TV when a former national team player (who won the bronze in London) was teaching a young volleyball player on passing/receiving. She was correcting this player's habit of hopping before the passing and encouraged NOT to do it so that she won't waste time to react (I don't remember the exact words...but something like that) Personally, I think maybe by hopping slightly, they are matching the timing of a hitter (kind of resetting their position to react to left or right, or go lower). BTW, #28 JPN is Mayu Ishikawa. Yuki Ishikawa's younger sister :) She's awesome!
I appreciate that you actually know Ishikawa . I was bother by the fact that he didn’t knew Japanese players , specially Ishikawa because she is a rising star . I wasn’t gonna comment on that , but since you bought it up . Thumbs up for you and your knowledge of the players and not only for the play (game) . Cheers from Japan.
I was just watching this game this morning and youtube suggested me this video now 😂 i love how you focused on defense in this video!!! I LOVE analyzing those patterns and techniques (with Japan especially). I hope to see more of this stuff! Good luck on the VNL!
Incredible content!! Interesting to see that split-steps aren't used by Team USA - it's quite common across many asian teams, and even I was taught this technique for faster defense by my old coach (an ex-Chinese team player)!
Erik, can you please make a Q&A video? I know I have a LOT OF THINGS to learn from you and TBH, you are living the life that I myself is only wishing, I hope you're happy always!
As a beach volleyball player, I went to Japan for a training camp and they taught us that hop for serve reception, but I'm not too sure about whether that's the same for indoor. Nice Video!
I seriously thought that Chiaka was Foluke. Also, I have been employing the hop when I play defense because your momentum is sort of preserved upon reacting to an attack. As compared to just staying stationary trying to think where the ball will go to, the hop helps you react quicker.
Hi Erik, I was wondering when did you start focusing on the libero position? And for a senior libero in high school what is a key element to keep in mind while practices and games?
Hi thanks for watching! I first played libero when I was 12 but only played DS or libero two years in high school. I also only played libero my 18s year of club during high school. That being said, I knew because of my height I would probably only be a libero so I practiced it a lot. Get a lot of reps, watch a ton of video, and learn to command the back court! You got this! Good luck!
Excellent reactions on the defenses ... As a general rule of thumb against 'taller' middle blockers (may be slower moving side to side) that a 'faster' attack (a quick set across the top of the net) to the wings might work well often if the setter 'doesn't advertise' their intentions till the very last moment? ... Just curious.
could you react to the turkey v Poland olympic qualifier match from 2019? it was an awesome nail-biting match that never gets old with some incredible plays
Saw you mentioned the little hops. In baseball playing at third base (hot corner), I was taught to use small hops each pitch, where I landed on the balls of my feet right when ball got to the plate. It always made me feel quicker when reacting to hits my way, though that could have just been psychological :)
The hops are used to a have a faster reaction using the bounce of the knee. Is a move that is used a lot in tennis. (Sorry for my english, i’m from Italy)
Hey Eric, I have really enjoyed volleyball in the past and really want to get back into it. I want to start watching some professional volleyball, pick a club and start following it, etc. I was hoping maybe you'll see this or someone can provide some insight on where I can start haha. I've done some research but I'm not sure where I should go or where I can find places/sites to watch constant games. Some help would be awesome!
Hey Erik, just a suggestion, but when you're making analysis style videos what would you think about using an app like Epic Pen to maybe just quickly circle stuff on the screen you're talking about to emphasize your point? Maybe like, drawing the seams and where the passer is / should be or how their pass trajectory could be changed with their platform, (if that makes any sense), to add to the explanation. Anyways, great video, look forward to seeing more!
thats a tough question. you need to try and know the tendency of the opponent. depth off the net of the hitter is important too. and also what your coach says! :)
Japanese teams highly believe in their split step and we see why.
Japan's defense is just insane. And that one cut shot was nastyyy
Those synchronized hops though 👀
You’re my favorite libero and all your comments and tips helped me understand volleyball even more. (Im a libero too!)
yay liberos! thank you so much for watching and for your support!
@@ErikShojivolleyball sorry but is the russian leauge allowing full crowds or is it limited
That hops are called Split steps.
You might have heard of it.
It's mostly used for our body to get ready before our next move.
Yep. Tennis players also uses the split steps. That's how they get ready to react and move to the ball. :)
totally have heard of it but clearly forgot during the video haha. i used to be a tennis player and that is taught in tennis,

I didnt notice those synchronized hops until you mentioned them. Its so satisfying to watch.
Korea vs Japan women's. They're defense intensively increases when they play with each other
The Japanese and Thai floor defense is amazing. They might not putting up the biggest blocks but their floor defense is amazing.
n28's name is ''Ishikawa"" and yes, she's the sisiter of Yuki Ishikawa

No.28 Mayu Ishikawa
Japan is crazy good on those split steps. Great way to ground yourself and prepare to move fast.
You should watch any of the women’s Japan vs korea match! The defense on those matches are always Insane

I also been noticing that she and him celebrate the same way usually...head tilt with both fists clinched in front of them lol

Wow erik revealing them hops, really cool seing these amazing moves.
Japan's training has a lot of fast footwork drills and stuff and it's really cool seeing it in action 😆
Japan never disappoints the audience
Haha that was sooo funny - the first seconds of the lamp reflection in your glasses! Glad you did not delete it :-)

#28 of Japanese team is Yuki Ishikawa's sister!
Lmao sorry but can we talk about all these line judges at 12:19. How do they do that wave in sync like that??
the hops increase downforce which increase friction with the ground I think. Its used a lot in squash and tennis.
OMG this is one of my suggestions!!!🤣
Thanks Erik!💖
Their hops are synchronized with the jump of the blockers too
Never noticed that huge hop before. Thanks for your sharing and analyzing. It’s fun to watch your video.
yess i actually love these analysis type videos!
I think the hops is to reset their feet/form/footing... damn love the synchronize hops
Erik, thank you very much for this video !!! 😊I was expecting it. The Japanese defense is amazing.
It's a 28 ... she´s Mayu Ishikawa.
It is for sure a great piece of an enjoyable educational video. Thanks for your analyses and comments on this match. Take care. PEACE!!!

Japan's defense is so organized and of course, sick.

Im excited for when you guys are back for national season :)
Have you seen Kim Yeong Koung's channel? I'm OBSESSED. Highly recommend!!
I’ve always wondered, how much of a chance do you get to interact with the women’s USA volleyball team?
I seriously thought that Chiaka was Foluke. Also, I have been employing the hop when I play defense because your momentum is sort of preserved upon reacting to an attack. As compared to just staying stationary trying to think where the ball will go to, the hop helps you react quicker.

too many players and teams to mention!
Do you have any video on libero training at home? My daughter is really loving that position -- but she doesn't have any techniques -- thanks

Question. I understand positioning yourself in the seam, but how do I know how close or far I should be? What I mean is the distance from the hitter.
I think it depends on the team’s system. Also, you adjust distance depending on the spiker’s tendencies.

2018 USAWVT performance at the world championship is an eyesore tbh. It was just disappointing. Even losing to the netherlands
I notice also the hops from Japan and it was also in the anime Haikyuu which I think from Japan.
