Clint Hurtt with unique players never worked well when he was D-line or DC. I'm happy Pete is gone since I feel McDonald wouldn't let that happen or would make immediate changes
That's true. Generally edge players get better stats so idk if that completely indicates that he is better on the edge, but I do think that he will be pretty good there.
@@SuperZekethefreakthis guy made a point and unfortunately i don’t remember who but he said that in denver he was very versatile and playing edge and being pretty good at it. DAMN I SWEAR JUST A WEEK OR SO YOU HAD LIKE 800 SUBS. Congrats on the growth man, you deserve it. One of my favorite Seahawks RUclipsrs. Just remember, we must get more Bobo lore next season.
Dre'mont is a beast from the edge.. Coach is about to turn him up and let him loose and keep Reed, Leo & Murphy on the field.. if Dre'mont was "Sabotaged" when we got him, he isnt now.
Thank you! I actually already have a video on them as they are covered in my free agent recap video! ruclips.net/video/w1A45ERer0w/видео.htmlsi=hVupaDJtyJDpB8sL
Thank you! I’m hopeful that MM can use his better as well. Brent Urban was an undersized DT that Macdonald used as a 5/6 tech / edge so I’d bet that’d be his role.
Pete definitely did use him wrong over the years we realized players where put in tough situations like this with Pete’s scheme but I see him having a break out season
Great video as always, I requested this video lol. I'm also intrigued at the thought of dre dropping down to 270-275 to play the big EDGE role. I think he would still have above average power for the EDGE position at that weight.
Thanks for the request! I think the big edge idea could be interesting if they make sure to scheme around his shortcomings. You can't just thoughtlessly place him there but in the right situation it'll be great.
For the play at 8:50, I think it's pretty normal for outside LBs to cover the flat leaving a 3-man rush especially in Fangio-type defenses like Hurtt used (Darrell Taylor and Derick Hall dropped quite a bit). The problem there wasn't that he couldn't cover, but he abandoned the RB to try and rush the QB instead of sticking to his assignment. If you think the decision-making was off bc he just switched I agree, but I wouldn't agree that it's just a lack of cover ability. Speaking of being an edge player, I believe he played almost exclusively edge in 2021 and maybe other years for the Broncos. I hope that the whole team being more assignment-correct will help most of all
First of all, yes that is a pretty normal concept for the fangio system (I think we'll even see Mike Mac run some of those). But I think that he charged the QB because he knew he couldn't keep up. I agree that the best thing to do there is to guard the back up the sideline, but I think Dre'mont knew he had zero chance of keeping up so he just tried to charge the QB. Also, like you said, I think someone who has more experience would play that better. I might be misreading the stats but SIS has Dre'mont with only 31 EDGE pass rushing snaps in 2021 so he wasn't full time then. He has gotten a bunch of snaps there over his time with Denver, but never really full time (from my understanding)
@@The_Legion_of_12s Thanks for the clarification! I don't have good access to the data so it sounds like I underestimated his edge snaps for the Broncos. Maybe I'm thinking of a different year or only caught certain games. Depending on how things shake out this year it could be cool to compare old vs new and see how the coaching they tweeted out helps (if at all)
Pete can’t always be the scapegoat! He’s the best Coach in Seahawks history, period! In his 14 years, Seattle made the playoffs 10x’s! And on the years they didn’t, they still were very close to a wildcard spot (last year if they beat Pittsburgh, they would’ve made the playoffs!) However, after Dan Quinn left, Pete never hired an experienced DC. Instead he chose to promote coaches from within the organization, Ken Norton, Chris Richard, Clint Hurtt and that’s what lead to the downfall of a once dominant DEFENSE! Idk how McDonald will be as a HC? But I do believe in his defense that he’ll put players in positions for success…Look what he did last year with Clowney having 1 of his best seasons and got Kyle Van Noy literally off the coach and he balled out at the age of 33! IMO, Seattle has more talent on defense than the Ravens! Players weren’t utilized the right way…They also played way too much zone coverage, hence why there was always an opposing player wide open over the middle! And they couldn’t stop the run whatsoever. Seattle was basically a bottom of the league defense, if coach Mac can make them a top 10-15 defense in his 1st year? Seattle could make some noise in the playoffs…#GoHawks
I actually agree with you. Pete’s problem wasn’t him - he was an elite coach. His issue was his coordinators. If you’re not going to call plays you need to have elite OC/DC talent (Mike Macdonald and Ben Johnson). Pete got fired because he couldn’t get his hires right. I don’t think the hawks have a better defensive roster but hopefully we can get close to what the Ravens had. Thanks for your comment!
Not wrong. They've had some attempts at one (Sean Desai and Clint Hurtt) but I kinda agree that they weren't given full license to run whatever they wanted.
The plays that i seen was all his fault he took himself out of the plays i think he will be fine this year... film study and coaching is what he needs.
Jones was average- pretty much in every way they used him, he's fine but he's just overpaid for his production. Even playing in his natural position he wasn't better than average. It's definitely concerning.
I don’t disagree. A lot of his film was difficult to watch. I think that Macdonald will have a more specialized role for him so he can focus on what he does well (pass rushing from 5/6 technique) but yeah he is certainly overpaid right now. I think he can return dividends if used correctly but I don’t know if I’d bet on it. Honestly Jarran Reed was a better player last year. 🤷
@@The_Legion_of_12s Yeah, he was but Nwosu going down and throwing Jones into the fire when I assume he was studying and taking reps at a different position made him look uncomfortable. Hoping a full offseason knowing his role will make a big impact.
😂😂😂😂😂 Sabotage.😢😂😂😂 I'm here to check you my boy.... First off, he was under playing his contract. It wasn't what he said he was. So what do you do with an underplayer. Release him or help him. And so that's what they're doing. They're utilizing him to his best athleticism. So when you see him doing well out the box. Please delete this
I think you could argue that he was under playing his contract because he was being misused. A 280 lb player will never be able to succeed. if he is asked to play nose tackle but the hawks asked Jones to do that.
Clint Hurtt with unique players never worked well when he was D-line or DC. I'm happy Pete is gone since I feel McDonald wouldn't let that happen or would make immediate changes
100%. Everyone was just plugged into a system which never fit them. Jamal Adams comes to mind as well. :)
I recommend going over to Top Billin' and watch his new video on using D Jones and his skill set as an edge rusher...
Yeah that's a great video!
Top billin has some quality coverage
Stats-wise, DJ did better when he switched to edge towards the end of the season so MM definitely sees something there

Long story short: Clint Hurtt is a bum
Great video; you definitely helped me understand why he was a non-factor last year. I look forward to seeing if MM can get more out of him.
Thank you! Diving into the tape helped me get a far clearer view as well.
He'll have a resurgence this year. That being said watch Seattle break the nfl sack record, they have the players to break it thats for sure.
I think barring injury he’s going to have a career year. Sack record might be a bit much but idk if anyone expected Baltimore to get it last year so…
Great breakdown, would love to see an assessment on the linebackers.
