  • This is a 'off grid' a restoration of a VERY rusty old hand saw (probably around 100 years old). There's a lot of manual labour involved and the only other power is provided by the sun - partly for electrolysis to de-rust the blade and partly to charge a portable power generator so I can power my grinding wheel - and charge the batteries for the power tools.
Along the way I remove the old varnish from the timber handle, clean it up and then treat it using boiled linseed oil. The metal saw blade is cleaned, de -rusted and the polished to a shine...
    Background information....
The Tight Yorkshireman lives in a narrowboat on the inland waterways of England, along with his long suffering partner, Dawn. Between them they restoring the boat they live on - but as if that wasn't enough work The Tight Yorkshireman also likes to restore old tools in his spare time. The boat and the moorings are off grid, so there's lots of manual work - and any tools have to be powered by a portable power generator, which is charged via solar panels. Oh and at the present time The Tight Yorkshireman has no workshop - so it's all done outside!

I think I'd be inclined to add a commentary, I so enjoy your Yorkshire wit!
Lovely handle - now I have a few saws like that, you have inspired me to have a go at cleaning them up.

Commentary was 50/50 whether to add it or not... Get those saws out and give them a new lease of life!

I loved the book shelves you made from the reclaimed kitchen cabinets. Maybe you could re-edit that one to change it up a little and add it to this channel. Truth is I like visiting with you.

I was undecided whether to add commentary or not... Something to consider for the future videos.
      Thankyou for the feedback. :)

Nice project Pete and a good diversion from the ceiling! Very good result and I learned a couple of new tips with the acetone and the acid. I look forward to the sharpening tutorial as I have struggled to find anyone that can do it.

Hi Pete, really nice video, bet it the most part of the day, whittled down to just under 15 minutes and didn't see you with a brew, but I bet you had a few, looking forward to seeing what you restore next

Overall it was filmed over about a week, doing bits here and there when I had chance.
And yes many brews were drunk!
      Take care... :)

I have a saw that looks EXACTLY like yours! I definitely recognize the leaf carving on the handle. Luckily, my dad kept it in very good condition, although it could use with a good sharpening....

I have recently bought a set of files so I can sharpen this saw (and a couple of others that I have). That process will probably be on a video in a few weeks...

Why is the linseed oil boiled and do you buy it boiled or boil it yourself. I also like the vids without commentary, so relaxing and peaceful to watch. Bonus I get to learn new stuff as well.

    • @TheTightYorkshireman
      @TheTightYorkshireman  2 года назад +1

Boiled linseed oil dries quicker than normal linseed oil. I haven't tried boiling my own (yet). Its a bit tricky as it's boiling point is very close to the temperature where it ignites, so it's very easy to set it on fire if your not accurate with the temperatures...
Glad you enjoyed the video. :)
