  • @twosetviolin recently posted a video called “We Infiltrate Viola Gang” in which they attempt to blend in with 5 blindfolded violists. They were shocked when the violists immediately voted them out of the challenge in the 1st and 2nd round. In this video, I analyze why I believe the violists were so easily able to tell who was NOT the real violist.
Thank you TwoSet for making a cool video about the viola and for taking on such a perilous challenge!

Thank you very much! We need to tell over and over that viola and violin are two different instruments, even if closely related.

This video made me remember how I started on the viola, like after 10 years of violin. I sounded just like Eddy, just kinda scraping the surface of the strings... I immediately heard my teacher saying "put more weight on the strings with your hand, you're barely tickling it" 😂😂 or "you sound so violin-like"

i am a cellist switching to bass, and while it is not the same thing, i can relate to the bow weight thing, as my teacher is always telling me to put more weight into the string. i also struggle with the low a and e strings, and while it wasnt mentioned in this comment, i’m sure that most violinists playing viola struggle with the c string.

I agree with you comment on Eddy's interpretation of the G major bach Prelude. This is actually one of my major peeves in Baroque music; so many musicians (myself seeing it in the flute community as well) will use low notes as mere stepping tools and focus on the mids and higs instead. Now, if you know anything about baroque instruments (specially futes) you know that due to their construction (connical, simple system with a single key for D#) higher notes and forked fingerings are actually quite weak in comparison to lower notes. That is what triggers me. Knowing this, if anything, the lower notes in Baroque music should be used more like a trampoline/spring (?) of sorts, to propel oneself up to the delicate mid/high registers. As opposed to a stepping stool that you merely grace with your feet and use as a safe spot to not fall over. In a nutshell, the lower register is where the real BEEF and BODY of the music is.
I know, very graphic and poetic, that's my opinion, Anyway. great video, man ✌🏻💜

I totally agree with what you wrote about the bass notes being trampolines-sometimes literally with the bow too

Epic video! The explanation was definitely clear on how you could tell Eddy and Brett was not the Violist. I try to use all of your tips that you say about the Viola and I try to apply in things like this to try to see if they are actually Violist or not.

Probably, I thought his vibrato sounded pretty narrow and fast, same issue with the bow arm as in Bach too

If the string instruments were a family:
1st Violin: The baby of the family, gets all the attention from Mom and Dad and is really popular at school
2nd Violin: The identical-twin of Vn1 (but older by a few minutes), who is a bit shier and always gets overlooked and tries constantly to gain parents’ approval
Viola: The introverted middle child who only just barely tolerates the shenanigans and teasing by his younger twin brother pair and always gets overshadowed, but is very sweet and the nicest and most timid of the bunch
Cello: The eldest full-blooded sibling; is the parents’ second favorite child and Viola’s favorite sibling. Is ready to throw fists with anyone who dares bully Viola or Second Violin in school (cellos are the nicest to us Violas irl)
Double bass: Their half-brother from Dad’s previous marriage, whom they rarely see but all greatly enjoy having around when he visits
    Guitar: Their favorite cousin
Piano: Their cool and popular cousin who gets all the hoes and just flexes on everyone

I didn’t think this video was mean to violists at all. Some of their content in the past was inconsiderate of violists but in this video, the fact that they featured so many violists and gave them a chance to shine made it feel overall positive to me
