The crunch time problem is so pervasive in the industry, that you don't even necessarily need the pressure of a job to be under it. A LOT of people overwork themselves even on personal projects. I imagine that work on youtube videos and stuff can bring similar problems for similar reasons. I have been trying to work more healthily on my game projects, but no matter what you do, that ideal of the starving artist who defines themselves through their work is hard to shake off, and the pang of guilt whenever you take time for yourself is always there. Even when a capitalist isn't literally doing it to us, our brains have bathed in the fluids of capitalism for so long, that we often hurt ourselves for the benefit of our projects regardless. We need to collectively learn to value ourselves and each other more than the market value of our work, and it's a difficult change to internalize.

Thank you so much for making this video. At the end of last year I was involved in a protracted crunch period to ship a game, the same time that a lot of the Rockstar crunch stories started to get published. My conditions were nowhere near as bad as the ones they were going through, but I started noticing a bunch of similarities between what they were going through and what I started noticing with myself. Specifically (and I hope this isn't too strange to get into), I noticed myself drinking more, especially since I was staying late more often. Seeing those working on RDR2 relate their own drinking problems in relation to my own habits changing, I was fairly disturbed with myself. Fortunately it was only a couple of months of extended hours before our game shipped, and I've been able to start working towards a more healthy intake again. I can't imagine how I would've worsened over the course of a year or two. I've had trouble convincing coworkers for a need to unionize, so to hear someone outside the industry reaffirm that is energizing. Solidarity!
sometimes people just don't recognize that the conditions they're in are unacceptable, because it's all they've known. it's important for people outside of the industry to be loud about this stuff because it's precisely the kind of thing that, with time, might get people IN the industry to rethink their position on unions.

If you're interested his latest game is called It's You: A Breakup Story, which is a sort of visual novel about breaking up with your shitty emotionally manipulative boyfriend. It's five dollars, and I think everyone who helped work on it gets 10% of the sales and then 20% gets donated to Atira, women's shelter and support organization in BC.
