I was hoping the same about the 4680’s on my ‘23 MYLR. I would want bidirectional and the CATL battery that would give 620 miles on a single charge. Until them I am very happy with my Model Y built in 12/22.
All the reviewers are raving about the range increase for the Model 3. Out of Spec has the 70 mph range of the Model 3 RWD LR on 18" wheels at 386 miles and the Model 3 AWD 18" wheels at 370 miles. Not too shabby. The new Model Y should see the same increase in range I would think.
won't happen. Needs to be 800 volt architecture and that is a fundamental change not a refresh change. Cybertruck or Kia uses 800v and both can do bidirectional
Sigh - wish Tesla would concentrate on improving stuff like standard autopilot, rain sensor, backup camera, 360 view, etc. There are so many fields where they still are in the lead, but the Germans, Chinese and Koreans are catching up…
The Model Y is generally brilliant but there are a few things that could be improved . Visibility to the rear is not good and the blind spot monitor doesn't flag a car till it's right behind your rear bumper . I adjusted my rear-view mirrors so I can see further back along the car. It could use a electronic rear view mirror. Yeah you can turn on all the camera's but the one on the trunk points to far down to be of much use. Another 100 miles of range would be good . Extendible thigh supports for the front seat the bench is to short for larger people to get comfortable.
Not many people complain of the poor visibility of the Model Y’s rear window. That (and the much greater cost compared to my Model 3) were reasons I opted against it.
We have a 3 and Y and I haven’t experienced any problems with visibility. The auto-wipers are random though. It’s odd Tesla can’t figure that out. Every German car I’ve owned going back 15 years had auto-wipers that worked.

@@younged510 Aren’t you the lucky one! 😏I’ve owned MYLR, MYP and X, driven over 60,000 miles using FSD and Autopilot all together, I’ve done long trips of 1200 miles in one stretch multiple times, driving in multiple driving behaviors to test range and I never got more or even close to the estimated range on any them. However recently swapped my MYLR for an EV6 and X for an EV9 and on both I’ve gotten more than estimated range!
@Nimbus_2k that's crazy I'm the type of guy that will measure every mile trip I drive mainly because I am a previous Bolt EUV owner. Did the same with that car. If you drive under 70 mph let's say 68. Your car has a chance of exceeding the Rated range. Going 70-75 mph you might lose 5-10 miles of range depending on traffic. But to get about 300 plus range going on that speed is great!

The reason why highland Performance version was delayed, was due them waiting for missing technology. Some speculated that they were waiting for a certain LFP battery to be produced in USA, so highland Performance could qualify for the 7500 tax incentives. Either way, there is not much reason to assume that Juniper Performance will get same long delay.
I'd just like a dedicated place to put my sunglasses in my model Y. Compared to my other so-called "premium" vehicles and even my truck, the Model Y interior is deeply lacking basic features like roof mounted sunglass holder, effective sun visors, built in garage door opener (as standard), blind spot indicator and cooled seats. Hopefully, the new Juniper will add the basic interior features that have been missing.
People tend to forget that Tesla is basic EV transportation. That's it. Nothing more and the new Model Y won't have any new features like what you mentioned. I don't get why they do ventilated seats and a screen for the back seat but can't do a built in garage opener or the sunglass holder. Or rear cross traffic awareness. That's mind boggling to me that they have so much tech with Vision but the car can't see or sense someone walking behind the car and automatically stopping the car.

I have on of the first Model Y's. I made a list then of things I wanted before upgrading in the future. Many things have been added to the current revision (a few are dual pane glass, silver color option, improved suspension etc.) or have been added to the 3 so expected to the Y (a few like ventilated seats, new wheel options etc.) but there are still a bunch before I'd consider. The bigger ones are 1) Improved range on the Performance (320+) 2) Upgraded battery tech (4680s) 3) Vehicle to Grid/home etc. Doesn't look like those are coming, so I'll probably end up waiting on the Rivian R2 to see what the brings.
Ribbon cables? I very much doubt it, that's not what I've seen in the videos. Hundreds of dollars is all very well, but it doesn't turn a £46Kcar into an affordable one.
I just want ventilated seats, much better ride on the Juniper model Y, even with my Tien adjustable dampers it still does not ride like the current model 3 refresh.
I didn’t ever see the setback mentioned. Plus I agree with you completely. I have a 2024 model three which is much smoother and quieter than my 2023 model Y.

New model 3 has much better range than old, with model 3 long range rear wheel drive averaging 23 miles more than epa range of 363 even, and that 363 was an improvement from old model 3 long range.
you are conflating two things, changing the battery in the new model Y and it having to be the 4680. Most batteries used by Tesla are not made by them. The 4680 will likely stay in the Cyber Truck and the entering large scale production semi. That has really nothing to do with changing the batteries in the Juniper. They change battery suppliers and configs way more regularly then they change the over all design. Quite a wiff. Not saying that the batteries will change, but they are not constrained in the way you say. And the battery config in the Model 3 refresh is now 18 months old? So it is 24 month old tech? I would be more surprised if it was not changed.
There are many things that just seem odd with his argument. The 4680 will be way cheaper (especially after DBE) so why would Tesla not want to drive up their margins on their most produced car? They might not use the 4680 pack for all three trims at first but I could see them use it in one of them starting out and then quickly migrate all Model Y and 3 to it over 6 to 12 months. It's not like they haven't had mixed batteries types before. As far as 800v arch, I don't think there is anything preventing them from doing a split pack (like the CT) so you can charge at 800v and drive at 400v. This would allow the packs to be ready for a full 800v arch and allow a much easier cut over to a 800v power train. Also I keep hearing arguments that the model 3 and Model Y share x% of parts and making the upgrades wouldn't make sense because then the model 3 and Y loose part commonality... Which is true but we are seeing an obvious change and difference in the model Y at least externally... Furthermore if they aren't making the changes now WHEN??? WHEN???? There is never a perfect time to make those kind of massive changes on your 2 most popular products.... But they have to be made to stay competitive. Not to mention, it doesn't take this long to reimplementing the model 3 changes in the model Y. The seats are a drop in replacement, much of the interior is a drop in, probably all the improvement inefficiency (Electronics side) are drop in... I don't we'll find out 😂

It would give an obvious advantage to their competitors. The only Tesla owners who can take advantage are CT owners.... They might change producers of battery but the platform and battery type will be the same and it does make sense. In model 3 highland they kept the same battery and motor but changed exterior and interior to make the car more efficient which increase range, comfort and to some extent charging. I do think in their first round of Juniper they will do the same changes as model 3 highland, meaning they will keep the same battery and motor/trim but make the car more efficient and comfortable because these changes will not be expensive and they can sell the car with affordable price. Year by year they will introduce changing battery, motor, etc. This makes sense as you compare to what they did to model 3 higland and Tesla is trying to make cheaper cars.

When you see it from Tesla perspective it doesn't make sense to make so big changes (battery, platform, exterior, interior) to a car that is already best selling EV in the world. I do agree with your point that both Model 3 and Model Y will get new battery at some point and platform but not very soon. As Elon mentioned before making Tesla efficient is very important which means with out make so big changes like battery you can just make the car more efficient and get boost of range, comfort, etc. That will cost very little to Tesla and they can sell it with cheaper price as well.
According to the CEO of CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited), a major battery manufacturer, Tesla is not currently able to effectively produce its own batteries, particularly criticizing their "4680" battery cell technology as a failure that will not be successful in the long run; essentially saying that Tesla "doesn't know how to make a battery" compared to their expertise in other areas like software and hardware.

Indeed they will change suspension, exterior and interior change to make it more efficient and comfortable similar to model 3 but they will not change battery and motor/trim as changing these two will need more change and cost.
The current battery and charging speeds on model y and 3 are going to get old really fast in the coming 18 months. 800-1000V architecture is slowly becoming a new standard with newer EV’s and Tesla’s 400V architecture with it’s much slower charging curve on everything except cybertruck is going to make those vehicles less and less desirable going forward!
Highly doubtful as the charging infrastructure Supercharger V4 are just starting to be fielded in 2025. It will take a few years to be widely available
The charging curve has absolutely nothing to do with the voltage of the battery. All that 800V systems do, is double the power that can be delivered from the charger to the vehicle through the wire and charge port. It does not increase the amount of power the battery can take while charging - for this other improvements need to be made, like cell chemistry and cooling of the battery. So if they stay at 400V, max charging power will still be 250 kW, because the charger can't deliver more at 400V. But charge curve can still be improved. I'd love to see charging stay at 250 kW up to at least 50% SOC, *that* would make a big difference in charge time.
Free FSD is pretty pointless right now. This will just show why FSD is worthless. It is more work to be a "Supervisor" than to just drive the car yourself. All this talk about self driving by the end of the year is just BS.
Current Model Y has amazing deals, but you have to live with its rough suspensions, mediocre noise isolation and poor cabin quality. I will not and I will pay a few hundreds per month on top of current deals for a better ride next year.
I like my 2023 MY LR that I bought in Feb 2023. Of course, I would like to see improvements (smoother ride, passenger grab handles, quieter cabin, more range), but it has depreciated so much in almost 2 years that I wouldn't consider selling it and buying a new "Juniper" MY until I wear it out and the wheels fall off. If the "Juniper" removes stalks (like on the "Highland" Model 3), then it's a non-starter for me. I've driven 2024 Model 3s that do not have stalks and swiping a screen to go forward or backward is ridiculous.
The Model 3 is made in 2 factories, the Model Y in 4. There is no way Tesla won't include all the tech upgrades from the CT in the Model Y, in part because most are cheaper. The primary difference is whether the My gets 2 steering motors at the front - I think yes, as it is a key safety feature for automated driving.
The supply chain is not there yet. It will be by the time the Cybercab is out, which will then spread to the legacy vehicles. Changing 1 part means changing 1-3 robots minimum... It's too costly this early in the game. That's why the CT was important to be a test vehicle for new tech b4 the Cybercab.
You do know they charge the demo cars to 100% everytime to make sure they can use by many people who wants to try driving the cars. So that is the disadvantage with demo cars even if they are long range or performance with 80% recommended they do charge them to 100% and these cars already have battery degradation as compared to new cars. I totally agree with your point that Tesla will do the same upgrade to Y RWD and LR as model 3 meaning they will keep the same battery and motor but make it more efficient by making it slim, aero dynamic and change to interior similar to model 3 but later they might change battery, etc.

I have one of the 4680 battery pack Model Y’s and they are trash. Slow charging and compared to the pack in the long range they don’t hold the charge. If I had it to do over I would by a long range.

The whole reasoning is pretty flawed. 1. Tesla never announces battery upgrades. The Model 3 SR started at 52 kWh NMC, then 55 kWh LFP, then 60 kWh LFP and recently 62 kWh LFP. Same goes for Model Y BYD blade, which charges from 10-80% in 19 minutes. 2. These are leaks out of China (not Tesla!) where Tesla sources their LR and P cells from LG China for all markets except US. We know that these LG cells are shit (worse than US Panasonic) and we know that CATL has way better cells available 3. Tesla cannot lowball their bestseller with a 4 year old battery pack. They did so with Model 3, but Model 3 is lower volume. Model 3 might also receive the upgrade. 4. Given that EU/China uses different cells than US, there is no reason to assume all models stay the same. Tesla US has to take Panasonic cells (or 4680), so it depends on what Panasonic can produce. A new 87 kWh pack could be realistic if Panasonic can add more silicone.

Not sure why people still dont understand that both Tesla and BYD are competing against ICE more than each other. The greater the general acceptance and adoption of any EV is good for any company selling EVs. Tesla sold almost 2 million cars last year ... out of 90 million potential ICE market.

My Model Y depreciated over 50% in only 18 months. Buyer beware. You'll be so under water on your loan you'll never be able to sell until the end of your loan to break even but wait, by then the car will be worth less than ten thousand and the battery will be near its end.

I was told a long time ago that the basic design of the 3 and Y allows for air suspension. If there was one option I'd want on my current Model Y, air suspension would be it.

Price movings and removal of items like hud and stalks will continue to be obstacle for ol legacy drivers. Who otherwise would've bought tesla. While Hyundai / genesis and others interiors look and feel better. Tesla only advantage is charging and possible fsd that still doesn't completely work. Old tesla looks dated compared to polestar and zeeker or even genesis. But i hope we will have a real fsd , or roadster in next 10years 🎉😂
FSD, in my opinion, is the only reason a lot of people buy Tesla. They're not buying them for the fit and finish. They're not buying for features per se. They're not buying them because stalks are being replaced by buttons! They're not buying it because of the superb rain sensor! They're being brainwashed into thinking they'll be able to have their car drive them anywhere. Frankly, who TF needs their car to drive them to the grocery? Or to their yoga class? Or Starbucks? It's great on the highway on a road trip but it's really adaptive cruise control with a few additional quirks.
Why are we still talking Teslas and EV’s? The majority of the electorate voted for a president who denies global climate change and is opposed to renewable sources of energy and wants to promote fracking and drilling. The owner of Tesla is a great supporter. I doubt people who think otherwise would be drawn to this brand and want to pay upwards of an extra $7500.

Many things have been added to the current revision (a few are dual pane glass, silver color option, improved suspension etc.) or have been added to the 3 so expected to the Y (a few like ventilated seats, new wheel options etc.) but there are still a bunch before I'd consider. The bigger ones are 1) Improved range on the Performance (320+) 2) Upgraded battery tech (4680s) 3) Vehicle to Grid/home etc. Doesn't look like those are coming, so I'll probably end up waiting on the Rivian R2 to see what the brings.

The 48v system saves hundreds of dollars per vehicle. It uses ribbon cables instead of heavier gauge wires.

Battery question is way simpler for non America teslas like mine, the Y will most likely have Catl m3p or something even newer.
New model 3 has much better range than old, with model 3 long range rear wheel drive averaging 23 miles more than epa range of 363 even, and that 363 was an improvement from old model 3 long range.
I think it needs more than minor upgrades. The competition is a lot closer.

you are conflating two things, changing the battery in the new model Y and it having to be the 4680. Most batteries used by Tesla are not made by them. The 4680 will likely stay in the Cyber Truck and the entering large scale production semi. That has really nothing to do with changing the batteries in the Juniper. They change battery suppliers and configs way more regularly then they change the over all design. Quite a wiff. Not saying that the batteries will change, but they are not constrained in the way you say. And the battery config in the Model 3 refresh is now 18 months old? So it is 24 month old tech? I would be more surprised if it was not changed.
There are many things that just seem odd with his argument. The 4680 will be way cheaper (especially after DBE) so why would Tesla not want to drive up their margins on their most produced car? They might not use the 4680 pack for all three trims at first but I could see them use it in one of them starting out and then quickly migrate all Model Y and 3 to it over 6 to 12 months. It's not like they haven't had mixed batteries types before. As far as 800v arch, I don't think there is anything preventing them from doing a split pack (like the CT) so you can charge at 800v and drive at 400v. This would allow the packs to be ready for a full 800v arch and allow a much easier cut over to a 800v power train.
Also I keep hearing arguments that the model 3 and Model Y share x% of parts and making the upgrades wouldn't make sense because then the model 3 and Y loose part commonality... Which is true but we are seeing an obvious change and difference in the model Y at least externally... Furthermore if they aren't making the changes now WHEN??? WHEN???? There is never a perfect time to make those kind of massive changes on your 2 most popular products.... But they have to be made to stay competitive.
Not to mention, it doesn't take this long to reimplementing the model 3 changes in the model Y. The seats are a drop in replacement, much of the interior is a drop in, probably all the improvement inefficiency (Electronics side) are drop in... I don't we'll find out 😂
It also doesn't make sense that Tesla would be investing in 800v charging at this particular moment if they arent expanding their line up of cars with 800v charging. It would give an obvious advantage to their competitors. The only Tesla owners who can take advantage are CT owners.... Which I don't think Tesla really would prioritize rolling out an all new charging infrastructure just for a few thousand CT owners
They might change producers of battery but the platform and battery type will be the same and it does make sense. In model 3 highland they kept the same battery and motor but changed exterior and interior to make the car more efficient which increase range, comfort and to some extent charging. I do think in their first round of Juniper they will do the same changes as model 3 highland, meaning they will keep the same battery and motor/trim but make the car more efficient and comfortable because these changes will not be expensive and they can sell the car with affordable price. Year by year they will introduce changing battery, motor, etc. This makes sense as you compare to what they did to model 3 higland and Tesla is trying to make cheaper cars.

But they have changed the battery platform.... The model Y 4680 structural packs are a real thing. Again I suspect they will release the Model Y Juniper with maybe 1 version with the 4680s and a new more efficient structural pack. As 4680 line scales and Panasonic's 4680 plant comes on line, the rest of the model Ys will transfer over to 4680 structural packs.Then the model 3 will receive that change a year or two later.

If they use 4680 plus upgrade exterior and interior then it will be expensive price but Tesla is planing to sell affordable or cheaper price cars. The battery change will happen but after 1 or 2 years of Juniper may be. When you see it from Tesla perspective it doesn't make sense to make so big changes (battery, platform, exterior, interior) to a car that is already best selling EV in the world. I do agree with your point that both Model 3 and Model Y will get new battery at some point and platform but not very soon. As Elon mentioned before making Tesla efficient is very important which means with out make so big changes like battery you can just make the car more efficient and get boost of range, comfort, etc. That will cost very little to Tesla and they can sell it with cheaper price as well.

According to the CEO of CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited), a major battery manufacturer, Tesla is not currently able to effectively produce its own batteries, particularly criticizing their "4680" battery cell technology as a failure that will not be successful in the long run; essentially saying that Tesla "doesn't know how to make a battery" compared to their expertise in other areas like software and hardware.

Indeed they will change suspension, exterior and interior change to make it more efficient and comfortable similar to model 3 but they will not change battery and motor/trim as changing these two will need more change and cost.
Don’t forget a new model Y refresh will also include the AI4 hardware for FSD.

The current battery and charging speeds on model y and 3 are going to get old really fast in the coming 18 months. 800-1000V architecture is slowly becoming a new standard with newer EV’s and Tesla’s 400V architecture with it’s much slower charging curve on everything except cybertruck is going to make those vehicles less and less desirable going forward!
And as long as people keep buying their cars, they won't see fit to change things like this anytime soon.
Highly doubtful as the charging infrastructure Supercharger V4 are just starting to be fielded in 2025. It will take a few years to be widely available
The charging curve has absolutely nothing to do with the voltage of the battery. All that 800V systems do, is double the power that can be delivered from the charger to the vehicle through the wire and charge port. It does not increase the amount of power the battery can take while charging - for this other improvements need to be made, like cell chemistry and cooling of the battery.
So if they stay at 400V, max charging power will still be 250 kW, because the charger can't deliver more at 400V. But charge curve can still be improved. I'd love to see charging stay at 250 kW up to at least 50% SOC, *that* would make a big difference in charge time.

Free FSD is pretty pointless right now. This will just show why FSD is worthless. It is more work to be a "Supervisor" than to just drive the car yourself. All this talk about self driving by the end of the year is just BS.
Current Model Y has amazing deals, but you have to live with its rough suspensions, mediocre noise isolation and poor cabin quality. I will not and I will pay a few hundreds per month on top of current deals for a better ride next year.

I like my 2023 MY LR that I bought in Feb 2023. Of course, I would like to see improvements (smoother ride, passenger grab handles, quieter cabin, more range), but it has depreciated so much in almost 2 years that I wouldn't consider selling it and buying a new "Juniper" MY until I wear it out and the wheels fall off. If the "Juniper" removes stalks (like on the "Highland" Model 3), then it's a non-starter for me. I've driven 2024 Model 3s that do not have stalks and swiping a screen to go forward or backward is ridiculous.

Selecting forward, backwards or park from the screen is not a big deal. Should have a manual location up high above the windscreen as a failsafe.

The Model 3 is made in 2 factories, the Model Y in 4. There is no way Tesla won't include all the tech upgrades from the CT in the Model Y, in part because most are cheaper. The primary difference is whether the My gets 2 steering motors at the front - I think yes, as it is a key safety feature for automated driving.
The supply chain is not there yet. It will be by the time the Cybercab is out, which will then spread to the legacy vehicles. Changing 1 part means changing 1-3 robots minimum... It's too costly this early in the game. That's why the CT was important to be a test vehicle for new tech b4 the Cybercab.

You do know they charge the demo cars to 100% everytime to make sure they can use by many people who wants to try driving the cars. So that is the disadvantage with demo cars even if they are long range or performance with 80% recommended they do charge them to 100% and these cars already have battery degradation as compared to new cars. I totally agree with your point that Tesla will do the same upgrade to Y RWD and LR as model 3 meaning they will keep the same battery and motor but make it more efficient by making it slim, aero dynamic and change to interior similar to model 3 but later they might change battery, etc.

I have one of the 4680 battery pack Model Y’s and they are trash. Slow charging and compared to the pack in the long range they don’t hold the charge. If I had it to do over I would by a long range.

I'm not driving anEV until I can back flow to power my house in a blackout, or supplement the grid at peak times to prevent brownout. Something like the BYD Shark pickup is the most likely type of vehicle in my future.
I might say Cybertruck is able to do that, but its battery is mid, though.
So where do you live that this is such a concern? How often do you have blackouts?

Again the Juniper trim will not drop the licence plate to the bottom as that is where the hitch mounts, I cannot see Tesla dropping the hitch option.
I'll be shocked if the front camera or extra range makes it to the US. Tesla doesn't like to admit they were wrong. That would be like adding Lidar for FSD.

The whole reasoning is pretty flawed.
1. Tesla never announces battery upgrades. The Model 3 SR started at 52 kWh NMC, then 55 kWh LFP, then 60 kWh LFP and recently 62 kWh LFP. Same goes for Model Y BYD blade, which charges from 10-80% in 19 minutes.
2. These are leaks out of China (not Tesla!) where Tesla sources their LR and P cells from LG China for all markets except US. We know that these LG cells are shit (worse than US Panasonic) and we know that CATL has way better cells available
3. Tesla cannot lowball their bestseller with a 4 year old battery pack. They did so with Model 3, but Model 3 is lower volume. Model 3 might also receive the upgrade.
4. Given that EU/China uses different cells than US, there is no reason to assume all models stay the same. Tesla US has to take Panasonic cells (or 4680), so it depends on what Panasonic can produce. A new 87 kWh pack could be realistic if Panasonic can add more silicone.
Hmmm... I guess this is all very interesting if you want to spend £46K on a car. However, it would break my heart to spend that sort of money on a car that isn't even that luxurious. These cars need to be mid £30K to be of interest to the average buyer. This is why the $25K affordable car was such an important vehicle for the rest of us. Instead, we're supposed to take a bloody Taxi. No thanks.
Did you watch his usual discount bonanza in the beginning of the video? For Americans it's not even remotely close to 46000 pounds. In Germany the standard M_Y SR is, 33250. Still not cheap, but nowhere near 46000.

I was told a long time ago that the basic design of the 3 and Y allows for air suspension. If there was one option I'd want on my current Model Y, air suspension would be it.

FSD, in my opinion, is the only reason a lot of people buy Tesla. They're not buying them for the fit and finish. They're not buying for features per se. They're not buying them because stalks are being replaced by buttons! They're not buying it because of the superb rain sensor! They're being brainwashed into thinking they'll be able to have their car drive them anywhere. Frankly, who TF needs their car to drive them to the grocery? Or to their yoga class? Or Starbucks? It's great on the highway on a road trip but it's really adaptive cruise control with a few additional quirks.
Why are we still talking Teslas and EV’s? The majority of the electorate voted for a president who denies global climate change and is opposed to renewable sources of energy and wants to promote fracking and drilling. The owner of Tesla is a great supporter. I doubt people who think otherwise would be drawn to this brand and want to pay upwards of an extra $7500.
