  • How Exercise improves insulin sensitivity
Insulin sensitivity describes how sensitive the body is to the effects of insulin.
Someone who is insulin sensitive will require smaller amounts of insulin to lower blood glucose levels than someone who has low insulin sensitivity, which is also referred to as insulin resistance, so they will require larger amounts of insulin either from their own pancreas or from injections in order to keep blood glucose stable.
Having insulin resistance is a sign that your body is having difficulty metabolising glucose, and this can indicate wider health problems such as high blood pressure and cholesterol levels may also be present.
Fortunately, insulin sensitivity can be increased and improved by changing your lifestyle. This includes exercise and eating choices. Exercise is extremely important and has a powerful effect on insulin sensitivity.
Watch till the end of this video and I will explain to you in simple terms how exercise can improve your insulin sensitivity

Physical training can be considered to play an important, if not essential role in the treatment and prevention of insulin insensitivity. Physical activity has a beneficial effect on insulin sensitivity in normal as well as insulin resistant populations.

Thanks for sharing this James. Physical activity has both immediate (acute) and longer-term effects on insulin sensitivity. The immediate effects are the direct result of a single exercise bout and may be evident during and/or for up to 72 hours post-exercise.

I love your videos so much. I watch your content purely for fun. I got into exercising a lot over the last year and it's turned into a hobby for me. Your channel is one of my few go to channels to learn more about exercise science. The videos are super informative and organised, and I hope you never stop making them.

I've been trying to understand diabetes for over two years. I've listened to many, many explanations, but, thanks to yours, it has finally clicked.
    Thank you very much.

This is perhaps the most brilliant explanatory video I've come across on RUclips, that's very much for taking the time to make it!

Dude, I looked at so many different videos, and no one has been able to explain it the way you just did. Thanks for making it so simple to understand.

James, I'm so glad to see a new video from you and really like this one. It's a very good explanation of a complicated process. I know you explained this to me on the phone but this video is a good reminder and something to pass on. Thank you!

The one thing that is missed here is that at first, you will see very high blood sugar levels from the “storage cupboard emptying". I'm a type 1 and I always have to up my insulin after working out. Also if you don't monitor them enough, you'll see that after they have lowered, they will quickly spike again. I have been working out for over a month now and go through a lot more insulin than I used to. I should point out that I'm not trying to gain mass, so I am not eating more. I am trying to cut fat. So I'd recommend monitoring your levels closely.

this is an excellent video. the concept of emptying the muscles of glycogyn is how i calculated how much exercise i needed vs carb intake to lose about 1 lb per week. sounds like i was on the right track.

I’m still not clear on how this affects insulin resistance.
This is just a guess, but insulin resistance just means your cells are less efficient in receiving insulin. They still can receive it, but they don’t take in as much. So if you work out, increase your muscle mass [muscle cell count] then you’ll also produce more cells that in turn can utilize the same amount of glucose provided.
Thanks for providing the analogy this helped me work out my own view on how insulin should work.

I am not diabetic but have been experiencing hypoglycemia, especially after working out. I have also been gaining fat since this began. What causes this and how can I continue to work out with this problem?
