Tommy, I never really thought of it that way, but that does indeed signal the dive is over 99% of the time! I appreciate your words, and thanks for watching! Best, Dan

This is the depth I dive in and the typical fair I see, but I’m a lot Jelly that you’re bagging those Gag while us Recs are waiting till June. Nice shooting Dan!
Thanks Todd, glad you enjoyed it! I've got a couple of Rec buddies who went a few days ago in 35' and said it was 52 degrees (ouch). They did get some nice hogs and mangos. You gotta be tough to dive those temps in an open 20" boat! Best, Dan
57 degrees? I didn’t know South Florida water got that cold. That’s colder than up here in the Panhandle right now. Our NOAA buoy off Orange Beach, Alabama is showing 61 degrees, but that’s just below the surface. It’s probably colder at depth, but still, 57 is right chilly. Oh and that ain’t dirty water. That’s a good day around here. Nice shooting. You’re a stone cold killer.😁 One other thing - looked like a big turtle laying on the bottom at about 8:34. Couldn’t tell what kind but didn’t look like a loggerhead to me.
Hey BR, man I wish we were off SF, we were actually off Crystal River. Had thought about working 50 miles North of there but the water temps are in the low 50's up there this time of year! Probably would have had a mutiny if I'd have swung the wheel to the North! Best, Dan
Good Eye Ross, dead spot on, I was off Crystal River, was thinking of going off Horseshoe but a buddy was just there and the water was 53F! Made me half way grateful for 57/58F, lol. Best, Dan
57 is cold. One thing I learned while winter diving off Tampa was when it’s cold like that, the gags like to find a cave and cuddle up together. I’m surprised you don’t spend more time checking the holes out. Ray Odor built me a short gun that I mounted a flashlight on. There were several times I brought up more fish than the other guys. I guess it was natural for me to poke around the reef because I originally did that while abalone diving in Southern California. Did I say 57 is cold?

Gary, the last time I was on my buddy Kenny's boat, we speared some nice hogs and I commented that I'd like to take those home with me. He said "I'll arm wrestle you for them", being that his arm is as big as my leg, I went home with grouper which was a pretty good second! Lol, Best, Dan
Thanks BB, lol, yeah I don't mind it too much in the 60's but they can keep this 50 degree stuff. I used to dive it in an open boat and remember it at 52 degrees one time. Kenny and I had to chip the ice off the boat before putting it in the water, no kidding! I did dive in a thermocline a couple of times where it was below 50 on the bottom and 80 on the surface, only had a swimming suit and shirt on, felt like someone smacked your face with a paddle...good times for sure! Best, Dan
Thanks for sharing Dan, good video and great shooting, but 57 degrees..... damn, must’ve been serious shrinkage.... ha ha anyway brother stay safe and keep em coming
Randy, that def got me laughing, you're right, def not a "photo" opportunity for sure! Oh well, on the bright side, at least nothing freezes and falls off, lol. Thanks for the comment, Best, Dan
Hey Nick, I use 7.5mm shafts. The rear mounts I make myself and the front mounts are cut from a piece of track inlay from Neptonics (813-867-3250). Use a hair dryer to heat the material up after you mount it to the gun to adjust how hard/easy it is to snap the spear in. Once it cools (seconds) you'll never have to adjust it again. Best, Dan
Hi Dan, what diameter bands are you using currently? Modeled a free shaft gun after your arrangement, but concerned about only using one band on larger snapper and grouper. Obviously shot placement is huge!
Hey EF, I use regular 5/8" rubber. One big thing is I do use 7.5mm shafts and not the more common 8mm (5/16) shafts. Big big difference. Another huge factor is the style of flopper and how it's pinned to the shaft. If your flopper has wings that protrude significantly wider than the shaft, it's really hard to pack enough power with one band to achieve enough penetration. And you're def right, shot placement is critical! Best, Dan
Thanks Joe, much appreciated. I'm blessed with having a couple of good friends who've been with me since the get go. Glad you enjoyed the video! Best, Dan

Thanks David, glad you enjoyed the video! I kinda like sticking a big Lion at the end of the dive. Easy to control on end of gun with only one real down side.
