Certainly gives credence to Subaru axing the STI because Toyota and the GR Corolla. Maybe they also underrated the WRX for the same reason because it makes no sense otherwise. They took a ton of flack. "Only 3 more horsepower!?"
Yeah, it's the only explanation. The WRX is only running 10psi stock, which is laughable. Toyota forced them to nerf it so the GRC wouldn't look like a joke.
There are many other considerations for car manufacturers. All 3 American car makers have at one time or another underrated their "muscle cars" numbers, they said for insurance reasons. These days insurance still plays a role, however you have bloated governments and carbon credits / environmental concerns for performance vehicles. Car manufacturers have to navigate all this crap AND market their product in multiple countries.

It is the diffs . Open differentials have better efficiency also the viscous central differential most likely act as an open differential until there is slippage on top off all the engine has much higher compression ratio improving everything. Basically Subaru produce a much better engine .
Good comparison. Its nice to know the new wrx are not much different than the last gen sti. Ibam a owner of the lastbgen sti and the only thing stopping me to switch into the newer wrx is the appearance of the back end of the wrx. Too much like the honda.
Subarus been known to list the wrx power number lower than the sti, i would guess because they dont want their "lower" model to have the same power number as their flagship. When i had my 2011 wrx(ej255) it was listed at 255hp but in reality it dynoed the same as the Sti.
Auto manufacturers play numbers games when it comes to power ratings. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see an advertised power increase in a year or so with little or nothing actually changing engine wise.
My question is that if the power is underrated by Subaru and if in fact it gets 300ish crank hp like the STI then why would it lose to the GR Corolla in both drag and roll races? They weigh almost the same and both are AWD.
I do wonder if there is some reason to underplay the crank hp here, like maybe insurance or car class or something to do with the tight standards in california
I wouldn't say the WRX TR's HP is underrated. In my opinion, Underrated is more like the GR Toyota Supra, exceeding its advertised Crank HP by more than 50WHP. This just tells me its power train and drivetrain is far more efficient than the STI. Drivetrain.

You assume that the previous STI actually made 305hp but maybe it didn't. If it didn't then your guess that the new WRX makes at least 300hp is off. My opinion is that a 305hp car will dyno higher than 238hp at the wheels. I think you are correct the new WRX is underrated but I think the true number is likely in 280's. Why does Subaru do this? I don't know but consider that the BRZ is also underrated by perhaps 15hp or so.
I agree about that - nearly 70hp seems a big drivetrain loss even with AWD. In addition the STI trans almost certainly causes more drivetrain loss than the WRX one.

Any quality tuner will tell you the factory tunes on the STI is absolute rubbish , I know my tuner here is Australia is a lot more impressed with factory tune on the 2024 wrx
I think your conclusion is totally wrong. Its not that they are underplaying the 2024 wrx numbers, its that the Sti number seems to be hugely inflated. Also when you compare to competition (golf r, elantra N, brz) where their listed hp number is less than the actual WHEEL HORSEPOWER, wrx is really not impressing anyone with 35 less horsepower from advertised value
Kinda disappointed by the number 😢. Just for comparison Golf r makes more than a 100 hp more to the wheels, even tho on paper its like 40hp, but in real life theres a huge difference. I guess this answers my question why Golf is so much quicker. But heck even my brz has been dynoed at like 240hp with same engine and no turbos. Cmon Subaru why is WRX so underpowered?
first the golf r Dyno's at 280-290 depending on octane 91-93. The numbers you're getting are probably coming from UK tuners who baseline their cars. What they don't tell you is that those tuners overseas show the BHP or crank HP which is calculated automatically on their dynos from the Wheel HP. So the dyno's over there are reading 330-340hp for the golf r. But it's crank HP and not wheel. Look for numbers on their graph which say P-Schlep or P-Norm or P-Rad. Research what they mean, and you'll easily be able to see what their HP ratings are. Most of these dynos for the golf R came out early because Europe was the only place getting a bunch of them due to supply shortages. Hope this helps.
@@chrisg5101 thanx for educating me, it seems to be you are correct that its not 340whp. But numbers I find is not 280-290 either. People claim stock makes above 300, some cases claim 320. With how quick the car is I tend to believe that number, so about 60hp more than stock wrx. Still quite a difference
i don't think Subaru underrated the power numbers. the new engines and drivetrains are just that much more efficient in power delivery. less loss of power flywheel to wheel.

all jokes aside, you can see on the chart that the STI is making more power at the same RPM than yours, top end may match but you will probably be playing catch up to an extent.
@@silverboltss2981 ahaha top comment! Thanks for sharing your observation too
Can you link the Flatirons video?
ruclips.net/video/dlK5XC_f3BQ/видео.html here ya go!
236 not bad, i guessed 220.
So it’s the the same engine and same gearbox as sti or not ?
It is not the same engine or gearbox. The WRX has a FA24 and the STI has the EJ257 (USDM). The STI has the Ty85 transmission and the WRX has the ty75, which is weaker.
Hope Subaru will make in future sti
@@Roccorocco892 I hope so too
@@Roccorocco892they will not. USA cafe regulations prevent it.
Not the wing 😩it makes you look like those Corolla owners and plaster hood scoops and on their hood lol
@@Nwrig004 My goal is to be the #1 STI wannabe !
@ I’m just poking, I was the Non-Turbo Legacy owner back in 2008 that modded a 2.5RS style UEL header to give it the “subie rumble”. Got dragged on the forums lols. Nice numbers on the dyno and all positive vibes from now on! I wave at all VB, BP,BL and select(2010-12 6MT LGTs) Subarus
@@Nwrig004 thanks bro haha! I knew putting a STI wing on a WRX would get some poke lol! Cheers ✌️.

@@carswithsepp heck ya bro what’s your instagram ?
Lol ppl are looking at the FA24 as if its anything different than a stroked fa20😂😂 they are the same engines.
you're lying to yourself... if you wouldn't take an fa24 over an fa20 you're the biggest of clowns.
It's normal. In 2025 or 2026 Subaru will advertise HP has increased to 300. Yet they did nothing.
What the camera?
@@BagratMuradyan I used a Sony a6400 for the rear dyno shot, a GoPro hero11 for the front dyno shot, and iPhone 15pro footage for the intro and car driving.
@@carswithsepp Thank you
@@BagratMuradyan no problem!
Most newer performance cars dyno higher. For example my 2023 Corolla GR dyno stock 281whp -285wtq. With a intercooler upgrade and custom aluminum charge pipes it make 303whp and 310wtq on 93 shell v power gas on a mustang awd dyno. Nice run on the dyno.
Any quality tuner will tell you the factory tunes on the STI is absolute rubbish , I know my tuner here is Australia is a lot more impressed with factory tune on the 2024 wrx
Bruh.. that wing is a buzzkill
@@Pabby_17 good thing it’s not your car !

The wings looks ungly
So, subaru has made the wrx slower, uglier, fatter and more expensive with unnecessary electronics... I'll stick to my 06 wrx/sti
Also 2019+ STI are faster and have a better engine. Dont forget

@@carswithsepp so yes, lol instead of putting a link
False, do proper research.
@@g_p_3431 negative, people just love to assume.
@g_p_3431 why do you think people do 2018 vs VB and below but not 2019+?? think before you post.
i don't think Subaru underrated the power numbers. the new engines and drivetrains are just that much more efficient in power delivery. less loss of power flywheel to wheel.
