    Jonas....curious if this work flow would work for matte painters? MP have to paint in 16 bit due to (Adobe limited painting features in 32 bit float.) I would assume you could save out an ACES 16bit tiff and have your 2 LUTS adjustment layers............and paint in photoshop under your 2 LUT layers....and then save it after turning off your 2 LUTS......flex it back up to 32 bit and save out of photoshop as 32 bit float EXR....and you have painted ACES image out of photoshop. (although slightly down graded and clipped due to the matte painting process)

    In many cases, though, I need to end up with JPEG format files.
    After trying the workflow you use for the OpenExr files, I ended up with completely diffrent results.
    Is there a different workflow you recommend to colr manage Jpeg files correclty?
    Or is it a case of 8bit vs 32bit images?

    • @simoko7076
      @simoko7076 Год назад

      you can't do this with JPEG images since view transforms and colour spaces are baked into the image. 32 bit EXRs contain all the information in a linear colour space, and then transforms are applied on top.

  • @pixelquarry
    @pixelquarry 3 года назад +1

    I was wondering about that so thank for this tutorial! Since this process seems very clunky in Photoshop, why don't you just save the aces settings to your image in the vfb? Photoshop has a very limited tool set for 32bit editing, so it seems overkill to me to not "burn in" the aces settings. Am I wrong?

    • @JonasNoell
      @JonasNoell  3 года назад

      I would say it depends on the situation. If the image has to go to a different software after Photoshop which has or expects a proper ACES workflow, then baking it would basically alter the raw data because you would apply the display corrections on the data stored in the exr. ACES data is supposed to be left untouched and meant to be used with the correct display correction depending on the device that you are using. If you bake in the display correction you are limiting its use for the device that you baked it for and can't use it properly for other devices or display technologies.

      @@JonasNoell what if we want to finalize the output, i mean i am an archviz artist and after the render in 3dsmax along with the render elements i compose the final image in photoshop and show them to the client, so does each render element has to be saved in .exr format because right now i save each one of them in .tga format and compose them in photoshop. Also once the conversion color lut is created for one image can that be used for every other composition that i do in photoshop or for every view i have to do the whole process again.

    • @JonasNoell
      @JonasNoell  3 года назад

      @@amitgedia Hi, once you have your viewtransformation setup you can recycle that for every other images as long as it is an EXR in ACEScg colorspace. All elements should be also exr, tga won't have sufficient room to store all the information.
      Once you are finished with your adjustments you can just collapse the whole stack, convert it to 6Bit/Channel and then save it as a .jpg or whatever format you want send it to your client.
