That puppet is actually perfectly made, they clearly looked far into the uncanny valley and put a lot of thought into the design.
It even has eyebrow muscles/moves as if it does!!

I was in a car accident recently and as much as this puppet alone used to disturb me, the puppets ordeal now disturbs me more. It’s like he’s going through shock. There in the moments, but not really there or present, so they feel like “scenes” to him. He’s out of body during the crash, the hospital doesn’t feel real, the vacant expression that people in shock usually have and then the end where he feel the loneliness of death after everyone who worked on him just leaves, because there’s no more they can do. I didn’t feel that last part, but everything about the music video before that really resonates with shock. Very surreal

I find his face and expression ability a lot more endearing than a lot of other puppets. Like I wouldn’t lock him in a closet in my house. He could sit at the dining room table, share a nice meal. I hope he’s recovered from his trauma. He’s a talented dancer

Now I know why... after reading the comments about what the song was about, I googled the history of the West and I really regretted having read it and that I only read the content of wikipedia. I think it is one of the most horrifying and unimaginable things possible, it left me with a feeling of hopelessness, fear and repulsion. I recommend thinking twice before reading it....

@@kyps1259 Yes, I can feel other emotions, although some of them are rather muted compared to the real thing, but the important ones are there, no worries.
If I try to feel love or hate, my mind answers with some sort of weird void, like there was a piece missing there.
That doesn't mean I can't care for others, or feel those bonds that form between people, good or bad. I just love them in the way I can.

The puppet is so well made, the pupils change size in light, the eyelids maneuver with the eyes, it's amazingly eerie!
Sadly he’s in bad condition now. He was sold for a couple hundred and in bad condition. He looks even creepier tho.

The Music Video is a lot- it communicates emotions not through the music like most, but through the visuals and the fact that the main character is a puppet, a man who has no control over his own life, and only has aching consciousness.
The slight movements of his (Theoretical) eyebrows, anatomically correct muscle flexing on a *puppet,* dilation of his Pupils, artificial yet genuine expressions of concern, and everything. Norman perfects the feeling of surreality.

I think the concept is how heartbreak has left him feel as if he is no longer alive. But he loves the other person so much, he still feels like he would do anything for her as if he was her puppet.
Actually .... this is apparently references about the serial killer Fred West and his wife Rosemary West.
Paul Banks seems to have some fascination with serial killers.
The song pretty much is the story of Fred West dealing with the evil he had done, and trying to reach Rosemary twice and failed. And then a few weeks later, he commited suicide.

Whomever built and animated the puppet is a genius. That close up show from 2:34 to the end of that sequence is so intracate. That's supremely good work. Mad skill.
You can see it frowning throughout the song (especially when it says "Oh heaven restores you in life") and honestly, the eyebrows sell the whole thing. It's almost disturbing how well thought-out his facial expressions are.
But what I love most is that, sometimes, the puppet opens its eyes wide, and it looks like it's (re)gaining consciousness, after phasing in and out of it.

But how did the puppet move? Like did someone/people move it manually and they were edited out or was Norman (and his very expressive face) controlled by electronic stuff (idk the word) off camera

Interpol has many great songs, Evil is great but there are so many great songs they have, Turn on the Bright Lights, their debut album, is considered their greatest and was a game-changing classic album in 2002, definitely listen to that, Evil is off their second album, Antics, also really great.

Everyone keeps saying how creepy Norman is and I see it too but I also feel like sympathy for him because in a way hes oddly human and all that hes going through just makes him look very vulnerable and I just have this weird feeling of like wanting to protect him, especially in 2:34 when the nurse is holding his head and he just looks up at her with a very human-like look in his eyes. Is it only me that thinks this?
Maybe this is the point of the video, maybe he is supposed to represent a real person but the bad things in him make him inhumane (thus the puppet)? And its made to make you feel sympathy because everyone was innocent at one point?
The animatronic work on Norman is insanely well done. I keep coming back to just marvel at every movement he makes. The man who made him, Carl White, is actually a professor at Carnegie Mellon University so he's clearly well versed in what he does.

I like to imagine that Norman has a soul, but he just cant move himself in his current state. He was at the peak of his creation singing in the video with all his makeshift heart. Accurate description, hahaha. This song always makes me a little sad because I had tickets to Depeche Mode with Interpol opening. I was super excited about both bands but my stupid boyfriend at the time insisted on a long dinner before and made us late. I could hear this song playing (the show was at an outdoor venue) as we waited in line to get in. It was the last song they played, so alas. I did not get to see Interpol that night. Depeche Mode was amazing though!
I still enjoy how you can see the crew and puppeteers reflected off the light at 3:04 and a few other times.

The perfect line of Norman having semi normal proportions makes it that much better when you look at him. Like every so often you notice something that makes you more uncomfortable but it draws you in more. Whoever made him is a master

This has become one of my favourite songs in the past 2 years, because I listened to it and watched the video on repeat during a very dark time of my life. I was suffering from anorexia and a very turbulent family life. This song and video spoke to me, and I don't know why. Thank you Interpol for expressing something for me that was inexpressible.

I know my comment may never be seen, but as someone who also had an eating disorder, I can relate to the same feeling this song helps awaken.
My eating disorder started in 7th grade back in 2009, and it started as a form of anorexia of sorts. Then in 2015, it got worse again. I was only eating one “vegan” meal a day at 5 am, and then nothing else. Then I’d force myself to walk one hour a day, every day, then do yoga and weightlifting for an hour.
It was very painful.
It was anxiety every hour of every day. I was so afraid of food and so afraid of my body.
But I’ll never forget how painstakingly aware I was. I felt super human, ignoring my basic human functions and not eating for a prolonged amount of time, but still somehow alive anyway. All the colors of the world were so bright, so vibrant. Every smell, every sound, all my senses were on high.
That was something I miss the most from being sick, feeling that hyper awareness and feeling so “alive,” so super human, even though my physical body was breaking down.
I felt so superior but also so invisible and alone. Truly “weightless” and “exotic,” “needing something in which to care.”
It has the same effect on me. To be fair it's a song about trauma ans bodily harm so maybe that's it. Wishing you all the happiness and health, homie!

This song goofed with my head a good bit when it came out and I was about 13 or 14. I had to watch it so many times to really figure out why the morose nature just got to me. Why was he dying? He looked fine, right? Well, I'm a paramedic now and I see how well they altered his appearance to make him look like he was hemodynamically compromised: the blueish skin, the diaphoresis, and the tired expression. It's a weird sense of closure, but here we are.
So he was dying of internal bleeding?

Now I keep seeing that everyone's talking about "Oh when I was a kid I watched this!" or "My Sibling/Parents watched this and i've been listening ever since." But when I watch this. It makes me think about how this man faces no punishment, think about it he's a drunk driver and yet he suffer no major injuries and yet the other person is on the brink of death. I love how this song portrays unfairness of our world.
It's the angel of death coming for some lady in prison or at least that's what I always thought, idk tho I know the lyrics it's jus very complex or poetic, these older rock bands used to have wicked song schemes
It's implied that he suffers from internal bleeding. He may have died in the vidoe when he starts dancing on the operating table but there are many theories about this vidoe. Another thoery about the vidoe is about surviours guit but I don't think it's implied that the puppet is a drunk driver and doesn't show who's at fault just the aftermath of a horrible accident.
While I guess I can understand how someone might find Norman to be creepy and unsettling, I just can't see him that way myself. Honestly I think he's pretty endearing. I'm glad someone's been able to give him a new life.

The reason I've been stuck to it it's because of the wholesome rithm it develops and the whole love backstory (putting aside they were both serial killers, of course)...

My brother passed away in a car accident on 4th of July 1994. The news showed his accident as a Drinking and Driving ad. I watched it all & now I use music as I did when he passed at 18yrs old to cope. This song is so awesome. Thank you

It was a news report coverage on the television that showed his accident in regards to the holiday and drinking and driving. We had just got back home from the hospital after being informed he passed away earlier that morning. I was only 14yrs old so I didn't really process it. Exhausted and confused I sat on the couch and turned on the tube to watch and it came on; oh boy they had every angle frame shot in that coverage. I saw it all, damn. So I love this song as I didn't get to see him until his funeral & scared he was alone. @@Gigiy2k6
I'm really glad to see i'm not the only one who struggled more with the premise of the music video rather than Norman. Personally I really enjoy Norman- can understand how he's off-putting to others- but listening to the lyrics and witnessing the 'everyday' situations he was put in; breaks me down a lot.
I'm aware of what the lyrics were really based around, but this song makes me think more of our limited existence, our mortality and (how I really liked another commentor described it): *aching consciousness* . When he's going through all these situations, it's flying by so fast Norman can hardly keep up- reminding us about how quick life in general goes by, and on top of that showing how easily it can be plucked in the blink of an eye; almost like a car crash. I really enjoy this song, but I struggle with it.

I'm not a big music fan, but this is one of my favorite songs that I listen to all the time.
I listened to this song in loops when I was in a not so happy place. It helped me a lot because this song express something I could not put I to words. One of my favorite song ever, it has such a special place in my heart and I love Norman dearly.

Norman is honestly not that terrifying. Something about him is just so melancholy and relatable to the point where you’re not even scared of him, you’re just sad and feel bad that he had to exist in this way where nothing can save him. At least that’s what i think
