It’s wild to have the ground vehicle lift the nose gear, thus bearing its weight versus push-tug. I guess the weight make the traction flawless and means more suspension, less total power, etc.
I presume they have some sort of flywheel to overcome the inertia, but once going, it needs enough power to overcome tyre friction only. I always wondered if these things had their brakes electronically linked to the aircraft brake servos?
To get enough traction. Large aircraft are heavy, and classic airport tractors (the flat, rectangular box type) weigh up to 50 tons or even more. This newer type uses the plane's own weight to get traction, and an added advantage is that the operation can be handled from the cab without attaching a tow bar. ruclips.net/video/tKjnUxb4IoE/видео.html
Normally tugs have to be very heavy to get the traction on their wheels to pull the aircraft... Alternatively you can make a light tug, make it lift the nosewheel and use the weight of the aircraft to get the traction on the tug wheels
This is towbarless. The tractor clamped the nose wheel to pull the aircraft with ease. Since the nose wheel is clamped, it won't rotate anymore. The wheel must be lifted to avoid skidding and getting damaged. ❤
@mikeinoahu4661 This aircraft is B777. And this towbarless tow tractor cant tow A380 because its to small but there is a bigger version of towbabarless tow tractor that can pull & push or tow A380. Thanks for watching. Please Like, Share and Subscribe. Thanks
The bar is used for pushback operations for a departing aircraft. This equipment is used to reposition inactive aircraft. It's faster to move a plane from a gate to a parking area or to another gate with this vs using a tow bar
@@SeeSaw72 İn busy airports, almost every 50 seconds a plane starts its take off, if tugs would have been used as you said it would slow down the insane pace of the daily operation
I don't see any benefit to this over a traditional tug vehicle, in fact this machine looks more expensive. I suppose it could be lighter, but it still has to be quite strong to lift the nosewheel off the ground.
Some benefits include, no tow bar to break, aircraft can be completely shut down including no hydraulics as the super tug provides all braking. Tow is usually faster than when a tow bar. Operator is protected from the weather as they are in a cab.
Hate to break it to you but the Kalmars we used were 110,000 lbs and we towed aircraft all the time with them shut down as a matter of fact all the aircraft including the 747 was towed to the flightline and they never had power on them, all the Kalmars had a heated cab and they didn't fog up like the nose pickers we had. Also if you know how to drive you'll never break a towbar.
What a WASTE of millions for a toe tractor, when we have the small toe tractors that pull just as much. Leave it to reduclus ground crews to waste money.

That tow is pulling a lot of weight at a pretty fast pace. Very impressive. Certainly saves on jet fuel.

It's about power to weight ratio that helps it move much easier x

You mean towing the aircraft is an additional expense?
No, I mean the pole system used now, is probably much cheaper than the towbarless system.@@MrJkmwangi
That’s what I was thinking. What was wrong with tow bar system?
This arrangement allows much faster movement to the runway. Engine start delayed, fuel savings more than pay for it…

Why not tow every plane to and from the runway. It would save a lot of fuel and save on co2 emissions.
Engines must warm up, oil pressure and other parameters must be stable, within limits for takeoff. must cool down after landing.
@@christianbeiler1979 Somewhere I read they need 3 to 5 minutes. In a busy airport they have know to sit for half an hour before takeoff.
