It got quite chilling near the midpoint and didn’t let up til the end. Wonderful how the author took the common trope of daylight being a safer time (with the protagonist even voicing such a thought) and then turned it on its head with the sudden appearance of the woman and the bird. The terror, the uncanny, the palpable tension in the air; all sublime.
That was fantastic. I was frightend when he was in the dark with her eyes .and searching for water his hands rumbling around not knowing what he was touching .the whole story was intresting thank u Ian 🙏💜🙏💜
One of the things I do is voice over work for a living. Have a deep baritone voice and everyone loves it but let me tell you, if you don't know as a voice actor how much hard work it takes to deliver the message that he delivers, he is amazing.
Fantastic story and narration. This is a unique and very good story. It is hard to believe the author was a one-time contributor to Weird Tales. This is a fantastic tale. Thanks for sharing this with us! I listened to this just in time for Halloween 2023. It is a very fitting story for this time of year.
“I have said that aeons seemed to elapse after Warren shrieked forth his last despairing warning, and that only my own cries now broke the hideous silence……… Keep up the good work Jen & Ian and, as always, stay safe!”
Gosh, a fey demon witch werewolf vampire? She's a one-woman monster mash! More seriously, thanks for this, and especially that unique little Keeper spark of joy that comes from scaring Catholic characters so hard it sets off the genuflect reflex.
Loved it. My room actually feels colder and damper just listening to this story. Well done! Spoilers below: This is a rendition of the fairy tree myth in Ireland. It's considered bad luck to cut one down or in any way disturb the tree. And there's another myth at play here, but I'll leave that one for your listening.
Thanks for sharing about the fairy tree myth of Ireland. I guess we have a somewhat similar mythical belief in my home-country, the Philippines in which it is said that the engkanto and elementals love to inhabit cool trees such as the balete (genus Ficus) and sour fruit-bearing trees. We used to have a santol (Sandoricum koetjape) at home which according to the diviner was the home of an evil mythical being.
@@simone222 Me and my members are studying a particular Fig(Ficus fistulosa) tree that is supposedly known to be only unique to Singapore and Borneo here in the Philippines. We're going to look for the said tree in the very deep faunas of Western Mindanao, As avid fans of supernatural. This mythology youre talking about will surely add a little spice to our search. Not to mention each of us will have to split up in a forest with only our basic outdoor training.
@@FattestCatInThePlnt Wow, that sounds exciting, Ben. Botany is one of the scientific fields I find quite fascinating. I wish you/your group the best. 🌸
love that terrifying reveal at the final sentence... "he had been living in america..... incredulity sealed his irish lips" dreadful that these things are out there!!!
Nice try. I know the UK isn't a real place. About as real as Utah, Portland or Cardiff. People us these places so they can sound exotic, but there not real.
“ So Ulthar went to sleep in vain anger; and when the people awaked at dawn-behold! every cat was back at his accustomed hearth! Large and small, black, grey, striped, yellow, and white, none was missing. Very sleek and fat did the cats appear, and sonorous with purring content.”
What, what?!?!?!! Lying kin… I wonder what possessed all the pets; where they were at when they weren’t where they were supposed to be; & if any behave obscurely after reuniting with their homes? 🐈All these, and more, questions do I have of your comment, for I understand the quotations at the for front & the end of type to mean a written quotation, & so my mind wonders…where have these cats been, how did the disappear, were they lured by a who or taken by a how? Oh so many questions, only you Eris123 have the answers behind this posted mystery. 🐈⬛So mysterious, such miraculous arrival; but from what journey, from where & from when & why, why, WHY, WHY?!?!!👹🕳🐇
People had different standards back in the day. I remember seeing a ranch cabin in Arches National Park, UT built by the first and only settlers of that barren expanse of desert, and it was barely bigger than the hut in this story. Privacy was hardly a thing back then, it seems!
I was listening to a story from this channel before falling asleep the other day and now I can't find the same story again so I can continue where I left off. Maybe someone here can help me. It's a story where the main character is warned to keep his cross with him and that evil will try to trick him into dropping it. He then has some encounters in which beings try in different ways to fool him into letting go of his cross.
One-time author? Wow, thanks a tonne for this excellent introduction to a precious solo horror gem by Theda Kenyon through your fab narration.
A one-time Weird Tales author at least.

I'm in and yes I've got my Peterson pipe with Awakened Elder and my cool drink. 💀

Interesting, a perfect example of it kind. The one story contributors to weird tales almost never disappoint.

That was a creepy tale! Should have listened to this at night!
In the house of golden eyes, drinks are shaken, not stirred.
Excellent narration as always, mate.
A wonderful story I really enjoyed it.. Thank you Ian..
The artwork for this one is simple yet super creepy.
It's true. "As you know, insanity is like gravity; all you need is a little push..."
Never has repairing worn towels been so frighting!

Always good waking up to some HorrorBabble!
Handy in the kitchen. Very tasty. What's not to love about this 'stirring' yarn?
The cool thumbnail grabbed my attention
Damn shame this author only had one gem of a story. Still though, what a treat, thanks gang!
Check Goodreads, they have 3 more listed. A good story for sure!

Awesome tale! Thanks
As if I hadn't enough problems with "The Man with the Golden Gun!" Cheers Warren, Special Agent 00666!
This was an awesome story tonight. I do love when the character stays in an unusual little cottage. Thank you. Have a marvelous day 🌟💖
Like one of clark ashton smiths lamias in the words of merricat:i was chilled bravo!
He was well in there - clearly she fancied him
Oh awesome, time to dig in
And here I thought she was a vampire!
Great story! Would love to hear a witch story theme for Halloween!
A very well done American accent
Hi Ian. Great narration as always! Isn't the link that you mention in the begining missing from the description?
It was! Thanks for letting us know. Updated.
oh wow you uploaded just as i was checking to see lolol

“Atavistic Superstition” will be the next album by “Flickering Invitation”.
Being Irish, I’ve experienced this sort of deal quite a bit.
I live twists on fairy tales!
I feel this story may have influenced the movie brave. The witch and the bird definitely do!

@@evelanpatton Lovecrafts cats of Ulthar. It's a great story, I highly recommend listening or reading!
Shadows I dare say there's a little truth to this tale
Hope I enjoy this one? As if I don't enjoy everyone.
The cottage is “About 8 feet square”? Think about that…
I think writing something like '8 foot wide by 8 foot long' might have made that a little clearer!
@@HorrorBabble nah, my point is that’s TINY. Like closet sized. Our 6’ protagonist could stand in the middle and just lean to touch every wall.

But who killed Warren ???
It was that rabbit up his bum
Pickman, Pickman had become a ghoul by then, and he was a touch hungry, so, he had a bite.
It doesn’t matter… he’s dead you fool.
Foul temptresses, amirite 👿
Dead. Ha ha, classic Warren! 😂

Try typing some of that into a Google search and see what pops up. Also check your Watch History on RUclips.
I think you might be thinking of Vampire Village by Edmond Hamilton.
"God knew what was in the terrible pot... What would be in it by the morning."
Yeah, I hear it fries your brain, keep away!
Poor Warren
right, poor guy was killed so many times!
He should have tried to seduce the werewolf.
Why are the pretty ones as always murderous, cannibalistic witches?
A werewolf with it's lair at stake couldn't outrun him?
She was a Slowolf.
@@HorrorBabble I really liked this one!
