I think I’d leave that giant looking cylinder out there on display, build a dual carb manifold, and finish it off with an expansion chamber exhaust. But anyway you decide to do it will be cool, and I’m sure you can pull it off. Can’t wait to see it!
When I was a kid I used to mess with my nitro .12 motors on my gas RCs… mixing heads and carbs was a ton of fun. This swap does have a ton of problems to conquer and I thibk that’s what makes it so much fun. Gonna be fun to follow this project when you get time to putter with it.
this is an awesome build. go for it horse, i personally wouldnt worry to much about case volume . i think it will be alright actually. please go for this build cause thats gonna be a monster
Neat project.I know nothing about saws except what I’ve learned here with a few videos. Looking forward to see how this comes along and sure I will learn a few things along the way. Thanks
IRONHORSE, the suspense is way over the top:) I am so excited over here:) You really know how to make this old timer feel like a kid again:) I love seeing that gleam in your eyes and that smile when you know there are going to be many Tips & Tricks shared in everyone of your fun educational videos:)💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Ironhorse you are a wildman. I love it, crank the heat up on this bad boy. I think 2 carbs will be a bear to get ballanced. Im thinking from a multiple cylinder mind balancing 4 carbs on my old VFR 700. Might not even make a difference here. I worry that a single carb puking into that massive intake just wouldnt be able to hold enough density to the carburated air coming from the small throat into that cavernous intake port. Id say 2 carbs may be the only way to combat that. Wow what a project!
Totally bad ass build man! I 100% believe you can pull it off! Dual carbs would be cool kinda like them wild old race saws. I love crazy ideas. Nice work!
If all of the reeds have that divider in them, it seems that stacking the carbs and just put linkage between them would perform better. Can't wait to see and hear that saw rip, I had a YZ 250 racer and it was wicked, I can't imagine a saw with those characteristics.
Great project. Will just leave some ideas. 1st the stock reed valve assembly might be thinner than the V-Force, giving you more room to pack the carb and air filter. 2nd, the whole intake ports are designed taking into account the existence of a pipe, that will act as another intake port. Without the pipe, it might operate poorly. Only testing will tell. 3rd, given that the refrigeration air flow goes from bottom to top, the fins from the bottom might make a barrier to the air to reach the upper fins, since their are designed to catch fresh air flow from the sides. Maybe drilling some holes will better that. Best regards.
If I were to look for a problem with the two-carb set-up, it would be the fact that the carbs will need to be mounted either quite flexible or super-solid on a perfect surface or the throttle shaft will bind... unless a makeshift lovejoy tpye (or any other flexible coupling) is used between the shafts. I would love to see a one-piece shaft machined, but can see potential problems; the "problem" would be exponential with two shafts (choke and throttle). I'm sure you already considered it as you are a problem solver. Problem solving skills are as important to a builder as a T27 is to a Stihl mechanic... sometimes, its as hard to find as a 10mm socket in a shadetree mechanic's blow molded tool box. 😉😂 Love the build; I can already see the completed version in my head!!
I've been watching your videos for a few years and I've built lots of saws over the years outta ones I've gotten from the scrap pile . I'll tell you what I've learned when I follow what u say it makes a damn good saw outta a stock saw . And when I thought I could do a little better than you do I would've been better off leaving it stock . That being said thank you for sharing your knowledge with us and to anyone who wants a good reliable powerful work saw listen to Harve he's been there and done it .
1980 YZ 80 has about 15hp and uses a 28mm carburetor. Case volume will be an issue but there are many ways around that! That’ll be a very powerful saw if built correctly. How long will the bottom end survive at those hp numbers is the $64000 question
Single carb if you're going to put the top covers on and make it a sleeper. Twin carb and filters if you go the rat rod look, which may be a good idea when it comes to the muffler😁
Very exciting to see this project. I have been wondering if anyone ever tried this . In my opinion leave it open no plastics dual carbs , I think it will be the equivalent of a ProStreet hotrod .
IRONHORSE, we all believe in you, you can do this:) This is so exciting to be here with you in your shop, while you are sharing your creative genius mind with us:)

Man, I grew up riding dirt bikes. I had an rm 85 when I was younger and that thing was known for throwing grown men off of it. It's scary to think that kind of power in your hands running a chain lol. I love it.
I think a single carb off a 3120 saw or some other big cc power saw carb would work better than duals. And it would be easier to fit some sort of plastics on it!
Pretty awesome to see you, so focused .Again, being able to do this doctor frankenstein saw stuff quite honestly he's got nothing on you Horse! Keep on. Being awesome!
Brand new out of the box those VForce3 reeds are known for poor petal sealing and, warped cages prone to air leaks. IMO two carbs will be hard to fine tune.

I would guess that two carbs would be better for this build since it sounds like you might be moving that much more air. I am not sure if it is the same for a two-stroke but a car engine with two carburetors the flow is not double one it is a little less. As for trying to get all the mods to fit under OEM plastic to hide it I would say don't worry about that if one wants that to be done do it on a later build get this build working well first.
First thing I’m thinking with the dual carb is like that 350 banshees. Thankgod you don’t have to connect them for the airboot manifold 2to1 but I’m very much interested in this and longer videos if you ever decide to 🫡🫡 long time watcher from Pa found ya from buckin. Personally like boyeseen carbon reeds and it’s metal reed block better then vforce when it comes to my rm250 . Also own a 91 kx60 with the steel bar for rear suspension and like you said and many who have ridden it have found out the hard way, small lil 💩 HITS HARD‼️😮💨😮💨😮💨 For exhaust, do you plan on a full expansion chamber or stay true to a saw pipe with your own flare on it? Would be dope to see a yz80 header somehow someway sized down 12 times for a saw lol . But then I can see restrictions from the spiral in the tube/cone. Looking forward to this build tho 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Such a cool project. I didn't realize how close you are to me. I have an idea for your carburetors. I was wondering, would it be possible to use 2 carburetors if you stacked them on top of each other? You would have to remove the choke butterfly in the 1st carburetor, so the throttle butterfly in the 2nd carburetor would work. Plus it would be really easy to modify an original throttle linkage, with an additional throttle linkage to connect them together. Then you would only have to make a single linkage for the choke. And a single intake adapter for the carburetors to the reed cage. Or a second idea/question, why not try using a dirtbike carburetor for this project?
Pretty neat, those bikes were quick. I think leave the cylinder hanging out in the air and run it on methonal to help cool it.. You thinking of running the bikes pipe? Seems like the port timing really needs it on those. I guess if it was used more or less upright you could even run the dirt bike style slide carb. I'm not sure about the air cooled one but I'm pretty sure the liquid cooled mid 80s 80 cc were around 20hp
IRONHORSE, God Bless and Protect you and your loving family for sharing your life and heartfelt words of wisdom for us to live by:) IRONHORSE, you repair, heal and save souls when you share, we all are better for it:)
What a cool idea Harvey, I was thinking about the carbs, what size carbs are the 372 carbs? I did a bit of googling on the old air cooled yz80’s looks like they ran about a 28mm mikuni. I have some vintage ski doo elan 250 single snowmobiles, the old 1971 I’ve got had I think a 30mm tillotsen, then they switched over to a 28mm mikuni in the mid 1980s. There is a world of differece in porting volume and airflow capability of the yz80 vs the old elan singles, likely why they could get away with the same size carb on a motor only 1/3 the size of the sled. The bike has no need of any low end torque as you know with the gearbox and manual clutch, its like riding a blender, off or mach 10! Is the reed block for that motor divided in the centre? Do dual carbs like you suggested with divided intake runners to keep the air velocity up in the intakes. If you went with a large single carb, I’d expect that to make it real lazy on the bottom end due to low air velocity till the rpm really gets there?
Unbelievable, must be the post Halloween 🎃 😳 video. building a Monster here. The vision in my head is, somehow let the cooling fins stick out the sides of the cover.
Why not use a walbro wb-39 carb? Massive carb. 33.4mm throttle, 28.3mm venturi. The old time kart engine write ups used to show two large tilly HL carbs vs the large tillotson HR carb. the HR made more power than the duals. Im sure this would be a similar instance.
Just thinking out loud here, but I'm wondering if you could utilize a stratos type carb and intake boot, but adapt a second carb to the upper butterfly? Ironhorse I’d love to see more on this and just think of the actual inability of an exhaust pipe the way that comes out at that angle and still keep it out of the way this this is going to be wild

What if you stacked the carbs vertical and kept the throttle on same side and connected throttles together with a linkage so one carb drives the other to use factory throttle cable
I love these Frankenstein builds! Very excited to see where you go with this man!!!! :)

Put your 371 cylinder on top of the bike cylinder (head to head area) and scribe on the bike cylinder for the cut down of the fins . For a template ..
Go with the reed set up. I think that would be the most natural and interesting setup.

Maybe hotrod is a better term.

For ideal with the dual carbs you might need to use one carb for ideal air. And close the other off for ideal.
Sorry ment idle😂
Love ya harv
Dude this is kick ass keep it up
This dude must be a Redbull Chainsaw Project technician .... 👍
I’d go yz slide carb and pipe, and machine a reed plate to increase case volume 1 or 2 inches
awesome.have been waiting for this one
Pretty cool 👍
Good luck. Interesting idea
you the man Ironhorse. I have a 72 dt250 yamaha maybe you can help me with my #'s when I port it. it's the reason I learned to port saws😂😊😅😮😢

@davesherron5665 Not to horn-in on y'alls conversation, but that's a dandy idea; a variance would be to use the lower throttle lever (style) of a strato saw to drive the other carb's butterfly by a secondary linkage. The pair of carbs could work like a Rochester quadrajet; the second carb could open a little after the first; one carb would probably fulfill the needs at/near idle; it would be a cool sound for the "4 barrel" to open!!! Maybe could cut staggard slots in the fins and the cooling might work via convection.🤔? This is gonna be cool!
"Roost Boost" or "Boost Bottle" for the crank volume?
Yes!
I may be inclined to try the motorcycle carb and figure out how to bypass the float and incorporate the impulse driven fuel pump.
That's quite a unique project..must be a young guy left that comment..saws had adjusters there long before the side cover did..I kinda laughed at that one for sure..these broke ribs are shit for sleeping🙃🙃

Yes but I can just flip over the butterfly!
I would use a Tillotson carb off a KT100 kart engine.
Ironhorse I’d love to see more on this and just think of the actual inability of an exhaust pipe the way that comes out at that angle and still keep it out of the way this this is going to be wild
Problem is stroke is way to short for that cylinder. I've thought about doing same thing but would have to have a rod made longer or something
If anyone can pull this off, I’d say the doctor uncle Harv can🤙🏻🇺🇸

Had the same thought she needs dual carbs
I am really excited to see this build
Can you tell me what year the 266 went away from the metal tank
What if you stacked the carbs vertical and kept the throttle on same side and connected throttles together with a linkage so one carb drives the other to use factory throttle cable
Have you tried the handle bar ?
I would run a single Tillotson carb like a old Mac would have
Dual carbs and full cover case
