I completely agree. As a Game Designer myself nothing triggers me more than how utterly wasted this beautifully developed engine is in Konami's possession. This must've taken so much money, care and time to develop and you can tell Kojima considered it his master piece and obviously Konami had big plans for it. PT to this day looks absolutely incredible. I wish Konami would lease the engine to a company with the talent and the experience to truly bring the best out of it like Rockstar or Naughty Dog.
Yea I wonder why fifa sells far more. PES is much superior in terms of gameplay. I remember few years ago when I played FIFA for the first time I literally could not believe how bad the gameplay is. I even watched videos of gameplay on youtube to make sure I played the same FIFA game everybody is playing!!!
I would really consider buying new football games if they didn't released a new one every year... Why not make a single game every 3 or 4 years and just keep it updated with some free dlcs for uniforms and players on their current teams? Maybe some paid dlcs with classic players and things like that. It would be much better. (Sorry for bad english)
Kauan Santos that's stupid, not only do you lose out on a ton of money but football itself changes every year - seasons, league tables, cups, kits all change every too
tobz619 but all of that could also be changed with dlcs, right? I just don't see the point of paying 60 dollars in a new game (4x that where I live) for things that could be solved with a single update on an already released game! And yes, I know that these companies want our money more than anything, but I'm just stating my opinions as a customer.
I love PES2018, the game feels so real but they have to fix the glitches with the players arm passing through their teammates when they celebrate, basically all the cutscenes where players touch, you'll see their hands a few inches away from their teammates body .
As someone who played last year's edition of PES religiously, I think the pitch last year was totally unrealistic compared to what you actually see in real life. If you were at a match or watching it on TV you can't see scuffs or marks on the pitch like they tried to replicated in last year's PES or even the last few years of FIFA. PES 2018's pitch actually shows off a degree of realism in this regard. Not to mention the colour on most stadiums pitches in 2017 was absolutely awful, it was a ridiculously washed-out shade of green, at least this year the grass is actually the colour of grass. This year they actually improved.
Mr D3rpyFish My guess is: console/PC fanboys. DF had its times when it could upload content related to just one platform a few times in a row, which made fanboys of other platforms jealous, and so this meme was made to piss them off even more.
I disagree about the faces. The player models look a whole lot more realistic, but the grass seem to have no Anisotropic filtering or Ambiant Occlusion effects on it, making it feel flat and, well, ''bleh''
Really , kid go back to the Atari days when opposite players were basically only identified by a simple color change and nothing else than I guarantee you'll appreciate visuals like these.
I don't get it either, I could live with the grass pop in any time of the day if it meant that anything else is better, I was even wondering if somehow they switched the subtitles.
Pes 2018 illumination is way better, but grass texture is better in 2017, but it depends, 2017 pitch has a lot of imperfections that aren't real in European Stadiums like the Anfield or Camp Nou
Well... all chit chat aside I prefer the look of 2017 vs 2018 during the top down gameplay and the grass.. I dont care about pop in I care about it looking like blurry plastic far more...
+conorsulli I like the stadium lighting and audience better in 2018 but the pitch is too flat :/ Overall I prefer 2018 but the pitch maybe the most important visual seeing as you it takes most of one's visual field. And really, its THE background.
When you're doing face comparisons in sports games, show a picture of the face of the real world character. That's what the games are supposed to be replicating. It' be more interesting to see the comparison between game and real life than a comparison between one game and another.
zarif He's terrified of me. I'm not even sure why, I didn't do anything to him. He's probably spamming his Pro-Playstation Agenda on Reddit more than this comment section.
The grass actually looks more realistic in 2018, or at least more broadcast accurate. That 2017 grass might be accurate if they were playing in some low tier small league game with it's patchy look, but most top level clubs have incredibly smooth and well cut grass. Also in the replays 2017's grass often looks more like it's artificial turf than real grass.
Thanks for this DF. It's good to see some effort put into the Pro for this game unlike the other developers, now i have to decide to get either this or FIFA 18.
Tony's Tech There is some difference, just not a whole lot. Defending is still way harder than attacking. Slide tackles are still nearly useless. The through pass is still the "win" move. Running up to the keeper and passing off for a tap in still will win any games on any difficulty level. Oh yeah, and the analogue passing still sees you passing to people in directions you didn't press. How FIFA is number one boggles my mind.
Really? The last time I played a football game was FIFA *2010*. Never played football since... I might return (after 7 years) to FIFA 2018 on the Switch though.
The crowds in my opinion look a lot better in 2018 as because of the Ambient Occlusion gives it a great depth. But overall I kind of like lots of the 2017 way more. In the end, since I hardly play football games, I'm amazed not *more* games use the Fox Engine for what it can do, even on lower powered systems!
Prince Dizzy the pc port is actually amazing this year, it's running pretty well for everyone on the WEPES reddit - it would also help PES sales if people knew the pc port was v v good
Fox engine has improved pes quite a lot, still, their moving techniques on the players still look and feel like they're still stuck to the ball, it needs to be more fluid naturally.
DigitalFoundry should do an NBA2k17 vs NBA2k18 video. It's coming out in a few days, and apparently there has been an large update to the graphics as well.
Just tried Pro Evo 18 demo. Damn is it better than FIFA. Slide tackles actually have weight behind them, and the through pass isn't all you need to use to win. Also the players don't look like weird mannequins, and the animations aren't fucked ip.
Not sure about a lot of what was said in this video. I've got both games and pes 18 looks much better and 17 which could be quite dull especially pitches. There's also a lot more detail in the crowds plus loads more colour. Only had it a few days so will take a while before I judge the gameplay. At first glance seems improved but defending just seems harder. Tackling I feel was better on 17 but that may be down to the fact I'm still getting used to the game
I didn't like the "photo faces pasted on players" appearance in the demo on my PS4 Pro. Idk if my having a 1080p TV caused that (yea, yea. Was supposed to have my 4K TV by now but such is life) or what but I didn't like that affect. Dug the demo, overall, tho.
Playing the demo on the PC, the game looks amazing up close, but the game looks arcade as hell in regular gameplay. Some of the player models are ridiculously realistic though
wow so with how literally everything else is the same, the animations, the models, etc. it proves they literally just touch up and reskin these damn sports games every year. absolutely nothing about it is made from scratch! hope you soccer fans enjoy spending another 60 bucks just for a damn roster update!
Sid Patil It's an early build. Just wait for the full release. Also, why not just play it? Unless you still don't have a Switch. The demo is 30fps by the way, but it could possibly be because it's an early build though, considering that although the game is artistically beautiful it doesn't look demanding from a technical perspective. The use of dynamic shadows though looks great.
Conventional Sport games are the very thing that "justified" greedy publishers to released the same shits all over again every year for a quick bucks. Maybe that's why konami didn't fully abandoned this title.
2017 looks better in many ways especially the grass the new grass they are using in 2018 is too clean and artificial looking...also some players faces looks better in 2017...
The grass looks realistic in PES 18 because Konami went to the stadiums in different times of the day and recorder and added there findings in-game. Do your research before making a video like this!
Errm, it's exactly the kind of feeble revolution I'd expect from either a PES or FIFA game which are both just a licence to make minimal improvements to the next year's game, safe in the knowledge that gullible members of the public will buy it regardless, and for reasons I can't understand, still receive reviews of 9/10. Someone explain to me how a sequel to any other game gets severely marked down for being too similar to its predecessor, but these fucking franchises are somehow immune to such rules?
Gameplay be damned we need better graphics. You know... PES could topple FIFA with ease if they started caring more about the gameplay than the graphics. But in this day and age of micro-transactions and anti-consumer bs I doubt that would happen. As far as I can tell from the demo PES 18 = PES 17 and FIFA 18 = FIFA 17 with a few more skill moves and twice the scripting.
the lawn is much more real in the pes 2017 very good but in the pes 2019 looks we back in the past of the games reality is choose the things to whim too
There is a big problem with cpu usage with this game on PC, it's using 65% of my 12 Core Xeon... and so it's a big mess, maybe it's just a xeon related issues, just like For Honor ( Not starting with Xeon HT )
I was surprised last year when pes looked better then fifa. This is still the case frostbite looks bad, weird saturation and exposure. Such a waste of a engine to only use it for a soccer game.
The FOX Engine is what really makes this interesting.
the fox engine is what makes this sad.
Naughty Dogs inhouse engine is probably better than fox
Cry Engine and Decima Engine are the best
Not like it really matters. Kojima now has his hands on Decima, which is arguably one of the best engines in gaming.
I played the demo and the gameplay is simply amazing. That's the big difference this year. FIFA isn't even near = "Ping Pong" game for little kids!!!
Battle Royale Personally, if PES didn't exist I would definitely just not play football games ever if FIFA was the only choice.
Nima V Moslty Every idiot buys FIFA cause of the licence not knowing theres A FUCKING OPTION FILE lol
I would really consider buying new football games if they didn't released a new one every year... bc more money

well you can just buy one every 4 years.. which is the most reasonable thing to do
Because they make way more money.
I love PES2018, the game feels so real but they have to fix the glitches with the players arm passing through their teammates when they celebrate, basically all the cutscenes where players touch, you'll see their hands a few inches away from their teammates body .

You are joking😅
Really enjoying the football focused content, DF. Keep it up
haha
Immense Data Can someone explain me the story behind this joke? I'm new to this channel
Mr D3rpyFish My guess is: console/PC fanboys. DF had its times when it could upload content related to just one platform a few times in a row, which made fanboys of other platforms jealous, and so this meme was made to piss them off even more.
You are completely right, Turbo.
Well at least it's not a pachinko machine
+Caffeinade It's not over yet!
... it looks... worse??
LE0NSKA yeah man, faces and the grass looks worse this year
LE0NSKA grass is worse
I disagree about the faces. The player models look a whole lot more realistic, but the grass seem to have no Anisotropic filtering or Ambiant Occlusion effects on it, making it feel flat and, well, ''bleh''
Really , kid go back to the Atari days when opposite players were basically only identified by a simple color change and nothing else than I guarantee you'll appreciate visuals like these.

Pes 2018 illumination is way better, but grass texture is better in 2017, but it depends, 2017 pitch has a lot of imperfections that aren't real in European Stadiums like the Anfield or Camp Nou
Have you adjusted the grass length via the menu DF? Just making sure the comparison is correct.
Thats a good shout i never thought of that...
Well... all chit chat aside I prefer the look of 2017 vs 2018 during the top down gameplay and the grass.. I dont care about pop in I care about it looking like blurry plastic far more...
+conorsulli
I like the stadium lighting and audience better in 2018 but the pitch is too flat :/ Overall I prefer 2018 but the pitch maybe the most important visual seeing as you it takes most of one's visual field. And really, its THE background.
Pitch/grass has dynamic wear. Because of that, i think it dosent have as much detail as were last year.
When you're doing face comparisons in sports games, show a picture of the face of the real world character. That's what the games are supposed to be replicating. It' be more interesting to see the comparison between game and real life than a comparison between one game and another.
Really enjoying the soccer focused content DF keep it up!
WOOOOOOOW THE thumbnail got me... the graphics are crazy
Black people -- easiest to look realistic
Really enjoying the content, DF. Keep it up.
Really enjoying the edited comments, TRPB. Keep it up.
Prince Dizzy I spelled it as jt on accident. I just woke up hehe
dizzy is purposefully ignoring you, looks like you scared him off from saying that
zarif He's terrified of me. I'm not even sure why, I didn't do anything to him. He's probably spamming his Pro-Playstation Agenda on Reddit more than this comment section.
Prince Dizzy I'm not sure, you should ask yourself that. When are you leaving Reddit and coming back to this comment section full-time?
The grass actually looks more realistic in 2018, or at least more broadcast accurate. That 2017 grass might be accurate if they were playing in some low tier small league game with it's patchy look, but most top level clubs have incredibly smooth and well cut grass. The grass in pes is horrible
Thanks for this DF. It's good to see some effort put into the Pro for this game unlike the other developers, now i have to decide to get either this or FIFA 18.
Cheers for all the Fox Engine info really interesting.
Looking at the thumbnail for the video, I thought I was looking at real photos. Dang.
PES 2017 looks better
Dimitry Profus
PES 2017 looks more realistic
PES 2017 GRASS VERY BEST
*OHH THIS MUSIC IS BACK*
*CLASSIC DF*
last football game I played was FIFA 2012 and if I got 2018 there wouldn't be much difference so I'll stick with 2012
Tony's Tech There is some difference, just not a whole lot.
How FIFA is number one boggles my mind.
the difference is the roster.... 2012 still had great players, 2018 not so much.
Really? The last time I played a football game was FIFA *2010*. Never played football since... I might return (after 7 years) to FIFA 2018 on the Switch though.
Tony's Tech mine was fifa 2008 on xbox 360
How the game plays is actually quite different
The crowds in my opinion look a lot better in 2018 as because of the Ambient Occlusion gives it a great depth. But overall I kind of like lots of the 2017 way more.
In the end, since I hardly play football games, I'm amazed not *more* games use the Fox Engine for what it can do, even on lower powered systems!
No PC review?
Extremely low sales and poor ports mean theres little interest in the PC port.
Prince Dizzy the pc port is actually amazing this year, it's running pretty well for everyone on the WEPES reddit - it would also help PES sales if people knew the pc port was v v good
tobz619 The PC ports of these games still sell extremely poorly.
Fox engine has improved pes quite a lot, still, their moving techniques on the players still look and feel like they're still stuck to the ball, it needs to be more fluid naturally.
Did you hear that the PC version of PES 2018 FINALLY has the modern visuals rather than the last-gen ones?
The fox engine is so fucking good but I feel like they could have done more. MGS5 was so well optimized yet gorgeous.
the body of the players look way better than previous versions, the players move way more natural
Why not do a comparison for the NHL franchise? Interested in knowing if there is a resolution bump for Pro users.
konami stole kojima's engine for fucking pes
It was never Kojima's engine, it was Konami's pretty much from the start. Get your facts together before opening your pie hole next time.
kojimas team made it, FFS.
+Leafstormblaze billyt but they didn't own it ! konami did.
They got payed for doing it. If you work and make a car at your workplace, do you own the copyright over that model ?
Konami >>>>>>>>>shit >>>>>>>>>>>>kojima failed game creator
PES 2018 or FIFA 18 PS4 Frame-rate please
Can you guys please do a quick analysis of NBA Live 18? I love the work you all do.
2017 looks better in every way except players.
and for us PC gamers, the improvement for the game are significant since they finally bump it up to next gen. at last!
It's ridiculously jarring how far we've come...
DigitalFoundry should do an NBA2k17 vs NBA2k18 video. It's coming out in a few days, and apparently there has been an large update to the graphics as well.
I wish sports games were more creative and development time. Games like rocket league, pyre, and Mario strikers shows how much potential the genre
Konami probably fired everyone who knew how to get good results from the FOX engine already. RIP Konami, you used to be a cool game publisher :(
Just tried Pro Evo 18 demo. Damn is it better than FIFA. Slide tackles actually have weight behind them, and the through pass isn't all you need to use to win. Also the players don't look like weird mannequins, and the animations aren't fucked ip.
Grass is much better on 18, was so dull on 17
Will you guys do a tech analysis on NBA 2K18 on the Nintendo Switch?
Downgraded the grass for better looking player models, lighting and materials?
So this is all Konami got left, Soccer and Yugioh.
4Horsemen of The Apocalypse
yeah shame. they used to make phenomenal games, especially in the 90s
Don't forget pachinko ! HIT THE LEVER !
Also Bemani
Cutting back on grass detail on a game 70% filled of grass was a poor decision in my opinion.
I'm disappointed you didn't comment on the downgraded fog.
Are you going to do an NBA2k18 switch comparison to the other console versions?
Pes 2017 players faces look way more natural and realistic imho
Almost as realistic as Virtual Mandigo Championship Manager. 9/10 IGN
The lighting looks better, but grass, player's faces (on some of them) and the blur/stadium look worse.
I play too much PES game my eyes can't even see any difference 😂
can you get this on ps3 and 360
I didn't like the "photo faces pasted on players" appearance in the demo on my PS4 Pro. Idk if my having a 1080p TV caused that (yea, yea. Was supposed to have my 4K TV by now but such is life) or what but I didn't like that affect.
Dug the demo, overall, tho.
What a time to be alive.
Gameplay is the most important thing. Better graphic is just for cartoon movie.
Why no mention of the PC version?
I only buy PES or Fifa when there is a significant improvement vs. the last version I bought. So once every 6 or 7 years!
Playing the demo on the PC, the game looks amazing up close, but the game looks arcade as hell in regular gameplay. Some of the player models are ridiculously realistic though
Can u test nba2k18 switch version?espicailly the fps?some people said fps is lower than 30fps?
"Too much to ask each year" this made me chuckle
for gameplay, 17 or 18 is better?
Grass looks crappy during gameplay :S Looks like a stitched table cloth
wow so with how literally everything else is the same, the animations, the models, etc. it proves they literally just touch up and reskin these damn sports games every year. absolutely nothing about it is made from scratch! hope you soccer fans enjoy spending another 60 bucks just for a damn roster update!
Was on the fence on which one is the best one to get, now I know PES 2017 all the way.
Im not a NBA2K guy but can we get a switch vs ps4 and or xbox1 comparisons?
-edit-
As a bonus add a little comparison to the last gen ver of nba2k
DF please do a tech analysis for the Project Octopath Traveler demo on Switch ^_^
Sid Patil
for what? it's a flat looking 2D game
Koko the Arabian Framerate. And no need to be aggressive, he was just asking.
Koko the Arabian for performance, resolution, the quality of assets being used, the various optimization techniques being used, etc etc.
It's in early development. Maybe waiting for a full version will be better.
Conventional Sport games are the very thing that "justified" greedy publishers to released the same shits all over again every year for a quick bucks. Maybe that's why konami didn't fully abandoned this title.
2017 looks better than 2018. Or is it just me?
2017 looks better in many ways especially the grass the new grass they are using in 2018 is too clean and artificial looking...also some players faces looks better in 2017...
I would like to see this comparision on PC. Is PES 2018 a port from PS3?
The uncanny valley effect on the thumbnail...
The grass looks realistic in PES 18 because Konami went to the stadiums in different times of the day and recorder and added there findings in-game. Do your research before making a video like this!
Can you do a PS4 Vs PC comparison of Pes and FIFA 18? Wanna know if us PC players have been shafted again
Errm, it's exactly the kind of feeble revolution I'd expect from either a PES or FIFA game which are both just a licence to make minimal improvements to the next year's game, safe in the knowledge that gullible members of the public will buy it regardless, and for reasons I can't understand, still receive reviews of 9/10. pes 2017 looks much better than 2018
how about comparing it to the PC version?
Thank you for your work :)
nice job , pes like fifa same after year graphic , maybe pes pc vs console comparasion
Come on Digital we want the NBA 2K18 Switch comparison!
wtf i rather play 2017 version much better graphical wise
The faces and the grass look a lot better in the 2017 version. Also, Neymar in Barcelonas team? LOL
Master League
My ps4pro fan is extremely loud when playing nba2k18 digital edition. Its jet like loud when only playing this game. Please review nba 2k18
Shame on you Konami, you kicked the man who created this masterpiece of an engine 👎👎
the lawn is much more real in the pes 2017 very good but in the pes 2019 looks we back in the past of the games reality is choose the things to whim too
The grass it's a huge downgrade. It's always in view, it was the worst decision to cut down on that since it's such a big part of the visuals.
Please do a tech analysis for rainbow six siege on PS4. After latest patch filtering has changed
Fifa 2010 dlc looks pretty cool
Really? PES 2018 looks great!
Out Of Control Gaming looks worse than 2017.
Are you talking about FIFA 18? Cause looks the same as well
There is a big problem with cpu usage with this game on PC, it's using 65% of my 12 Core Xeon...
and so it's a big mess, maybe it's just a xeon related issues, just like For Honor ( Not starting with Xeon HT )
You're all hating on them but PES 2018 has way better gameplay and much tighter controls than fifa 17 and 18. That's what matters most.
How tight can you make the controls in a soccer game before they snap?
MrGamemaker8 The answer is... much tighter than FIFA's.
if they used unreal engine it would be totally awesome. it's used by every developer and easiest to be utilised...
The cars have parking spots reserved for more than one season. lol
WILL IT GO AGAIN LOOKING BETTER IN CONSOLES THAN PC?
-_-
Very detailed subbed
I think the grass in 2017 looks MUCH better.
I was surprised last year when pes looked better then fifa. This is still the case frostbite looks bad, weird saturation and exposure. Such a waste of a engine to only use it for a soccer game.
Yourgrandma • Yeah, I'd love to see the engine utilized in a lot more games. Who knows, maybe Konami is up to something.
I want to see the difference between 2017(pc)and 2018(pc)or 2018(pc)and 2018(PS4).
PES 2017 Some stadium lights on
PES 2018 All stadium lights on
That'll be $60.
Grass is miles better on 2017 and that's 90% of what is on screen at all times. What an odd choice to make it so flat in the new release
