  • I'm finally revealing the layout for my allotment plot! The plan is still not 100% finalised, I'm currently deciding on exactly what I'd like to grow, but the position of the vegetable beds and other areas are laid out and ready for me to start work on!
    There's going to be raised bed herb gardens, three large veg beds growing a variety of things, I'm planning on a grass patch with a picnic bench, sunflowers which I'm super excited to grow, and eventually I'll be building a fruit cage!
    If you're interested in seeing Derek the drone, here is a link to it on Amazon amzn.to/2HhXdOM It is an affiliate link, which doesn't effect the price at all but would help me out a lot, although if you shop around there are some great deals to be had on one.
    Thank you very much for watching ⭐ New videos every Tuesday at 4pm GMT!

    A little bit about me and what My Carbon Coach is. I'm Tim, and three years ago I decided that I really needed to do something about the climate crisis. I couldn't sit back and do the bare minimum any longer and so my adventure of living more sustainably began.
    I began studying a degree in Environmental Science with the Open University which I have just completed in June and whilst studying I started My Carbon Coach as a blog, RUclips channel and social media presence. I chose the name because I want to help people reduce their impact on the environment through coaching and looking at reducing carbon footprints, then working together to make it so 🖖 basically the Marie Kondo of the carbon footprint world!
    Along the way this has led to so many exciting adventures. Starting a monthly litter picking event, an online eco book club, and of course this allotment, and now by a strange twist of fate and a huge leap of faith the plastic-free shop and attached eco-school.
    I love sharing my journey of reducing my own carbon 👣 and hope that it inspires you to make a change, or think about something from a different angle.
    Much love, Tim

    You want to take a look at Lavender & Leeks, Katie has half a plot and she has really done a great job of using every inch of space. Like you she fancied a small lawn... so she decided on a chamomile lawn. I love your enthusiasm and heres to years of happy growing 😊

      Thanks so much Mary! I watched almost every video Katie has made while I was waiting for my plot, as well as Erica's little Welsh garden. I'll have to go back and have a look at that lawn though!

      I really like that idea of adding salads to the herb beds, I had thought to use one of my veg beds for leaves and things, but will do some experimenting and see what I can come up with! Thanks so much Sandra!

    You'll work out what bed size works best on your plot. Mine are all 1.2m by 2.4m but that's because the wood comes in that size. Meet little drone!

    • @MyCarbonCoach
      @MyCarbonCoach  4 года назад

      That's a fantastic idea for bed sizes, check the shops first to see how big they sell them! I'm relatively handy with a saw and hammer so I'm going to give it a go making my own hopefully!

    The little grass area sounds great, I managed to snag a broken picnic table from work that they threw in the skip, so I've reassembled/repaired it and have a place to sit/table to use. My plot is very much in the planning stage like yours. Seed potatoes are on order though so hopefully I can get some planting done within the next few weeks.

    • @MyCarbonCoach
      @MyCarbonCoach  4 года назад

      That's amazing you found your table for free, and really cool to repair and reuse rather than buying new.
      I'll look forward to hearing about your potatoes buddy, I'm just about to sow some seeds indoors to get them started while I work on the beds!

    I whole-heartedly agree about raised-bed width. I'm 1.9 M tall, with long arms, but made my beds only about 3 feet wide. Part of that is because of comfort and ease, and partly because with a mini-hoop house or cold frame on a bed, you only have access from one side. Herb bed access is also a big concern, unless you are using paving stones to step onto and work from. I'd also remind you that, one growing season at a time, you can engineer planting so that tall crops, like peas and beans, can shade cool crops like salad plants.

    • @MyCarbonCoach
      @MyCarbonCoach  2 года назад

      Sounds like a great tip about remembering different heights of crops, I really like that thank you!

    Great vid Tim!The plans you are making sound great! Just make sure you can reach the middle of any bed without standing on it !Try and make paths big enough for a small wheel barrow to fit & only one other idea!Have guttering on both sides of your shed teeing up around the back and have as much rain water catchment as possible!Can you give me some details about what drone your using please!You can start your onions off now from seed and chit some spuds ready to plant!Dont rush out to buy seeds ,i find at first its best to buy grow your own magazine and or kitchen garden magazine ,these have loads of free seeds and great ideas and tips ,Keep up the good work and im really looking forward to seeing how it all comes together over the growing season.Shaun.

    • @MyCarbonCoach
      @MyCarbonCoach  4 года назад

      Thanks again Shaun! Yep I definitely can't reach into the middle of those herb beds so they'll need scaling down, might even be able to squeeze three in then!
      That's a good idea to get the guttering pipe running round the back of the shed, I imagine many people will have too much water after the past week or so. I haven't picked up any magazines yet, I forget they do them for gardening! A trip down to WH Smiths will be in order this weekend.
      My drone is a DJI Mavic Mini. Here's a link to Amazon, it is an affiliate link, amzn.to/2HhXdOM but I'm sure if you shopped around there's definitely deals to be had. I liked it because it's small, really portable, and seemed good for a beginner pilot like myself!
      Cheers buddy!

    Just one other tip, back when I had my allotment before I started growing in my own garden, I made my raised beds too wide. 4 feet is ideal as you can reach from both sides. Your herb beds as they are will have to be walked on to be weeded!

    • @MyCarbonCoach
      @MyCarbonCoach  4 года назад +1

      Thanks buddy, that's a great rule of thumb, and something I hadn't really considered when I was doodling my layout! I agree there definitely needs to be a rethink on the herb bed sizes and layouts. They'll be the first beds that I put in, hopefully this month!

  • @hitchjack
    @hitchjack 4 года назад +2

    Hey Tim you seem to have some great ideas. I’d advise watching some of Charles Dowding’s videos, even if only for how he does salad as its pretty amazing. He does no dig which is also a great thing to consider.

    • @MyCarbonCoach
      @MyCarbonCoach  4 года назад +1

      I've had Charles recommended to me a few times now. No dig certainly sounds interesting, and the theory seems good. I'm currently thinking that I want to clear the plot through digging first so I know what's in it 100% first and then ease myself into being less damaging to the soil as I find my feet!

    I hope you welcome advise. I have some raised beds. One is slightly too wide and I can't reach the center without stepping into the bed (bad!). Make a greater number of raised beds that are narrow enough that you can reach the center so that you never have to step into it.

    • @MyCarbonCoach
      @MyCarbonCoach  4 года назад

      Oh I absolutely welcome and try to take on advise! That's a really good point about making it as convenient as possible to access and grow my crops.
      I've had a rethink on the herb beds already and am going to try and use 3 separate 1x1 beds now instead of the 2 mega ones!

Best in pots😊 I experimented with herbs I brought from supermarkets and Basil did really well😊 so did parsley. Chives I brought from garden center! But they have such a Beautiful flower when they go to seed🌺. Coriander which is my favourite did fine.

    Hi Tim, your plans look very good as a starting point. Thinking about the veg, have you started chitting your potatoes? This needs to be started now for planting mid-March, you will find plenty of videos on growing potatoes, but they are a great starting crop as they clear the ground well and taste unbelievably good for not a huge amount of effort. Also what about mixing up herbs and wildflowers together to save yourself some growing space for veg?
