Return to Elephant Hill, a Jeep Badge of Honor Trail in Canyonlands National Park Needles District

Join us as we return to the Elephant Hill Trail, located in the heart of Canyonlands National Park’s Needles District. This trail is an immersive experience in the rugged beauty of Utah’s backcountry. The trail itself is moderately challenging, requiring a high clearance 4x4 to navigate. We were joined this time by our good friends Scott and Jen with their Jeep named Road Runner.
Our adventure takes us through the trail’s notorious obstacles. We tackle the Devil’s Pocket, a narrow canyon with only inches of clearance to spare. The SOB Hill lives up to its name with a tight corner and boulder-strewn path that demands precision and control. As we descend the Silver Stairs, we navigate a series of ledges that appear silver in the right light.
A highlight of our trip is the stunning confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers. From our vantage point, we witness the merging of these two mighty rivers, each carrying its own distinct color and story. In an unusual twist, the Green River was the mightier of the two, carrying its silt load almost all the way across the confluence.
We also explored the petroglyphs that adorn many rock faces throughout the park. These ancient paintings, left by the Ancestral Puebloans and the Ute Tribe, offer a glimpse into the lives and beliefs of the indigenous inhabitants of this land.
The scenery along the Elephant Hill Trail is nothing short of spectacular. We’re surrounded by a landscape of colorful sandstone spires, arches, and plateaus. The geology tells a story of time, with layers of rock formations revealing the Earth’s history.
Our journey through the Elephant Hill Badge of Honor Trail is a testament to the enduring allure of the American Southwest. It’s a place where the challenges of the trail are matched only by the awe-inspiring beauty of the land.
