Scramble is legit one of my all time favorite games, likely due to nostalgia more than game quality. It employs a classic video game trope that you should cover some day - the way to refill your ship’s fuel tank is to blow up a fuel tank on the ground.
I logged lots of arcade time in the early 1980s, probably more than 99.99% of kids around my age who were alive at the time. Both of my parents worked at a Showbiz Pizza Place and instead of getting a babysitter they would bring me to work and give me a bunch of tokens to keep me busy. There were two "over rated" games that I was not a big fan of: Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Seriously. I could never get into them. In Pac-Man you were trapped in a single screen maze and have limited offensive options. Donkey Kong is difficult and jump man controlled very stiff. For the record, the games I really liked included: Moon Patrol, Time Pilot, Galaga, Joust, Jungle Hunt, Frontline, Jungle Hunt, Pole Position II, and Star Trek. I do remember when Dragon's Lair showed up, but it was 50 cents to play and I always felt like I was too young to play it (probably around 8) so I just watched other people play it instead. Even early on I understood it was more of an interactive cartoon than a video game and had major limitations because of that.
That's a wonderful memory, and I appreciate you so much for sharing it with the community! It's not often you hear people sway others from Pac-man or Donkey Kong, and I that's a refreshing take. You lucked out at getting the ins at a showbiz pizza though, I would have lost my mind if my pops worked at Chuck E. Cheese lmao.
I disagree on Scramble. If you think the game is too easy, it's a bit like Contra in that the difficulty increases with multiple loops. You should play the game on the 4th loop if you think it's too easy. And the spiritual sequel, Super Cobra, is actually a better game. Magician Lord is just a heavy memorizer, that's why it's hard. Neo Turf Masters cheats like crazy so I disagree with your comment that that's a good Neo Geo game. One arcade game people should avoid (other than Neo Turf Masters) is Dangun Feveron. OMFG, don't get me started.
There is one game that was my arcade bane...Donkey Kong 3. So different then the first two,no Mario, basically the same level over and over, and those darn WORMS! Always getting in the way and they were all but undefeatable. ARGHHHH!!
Wow. No. I vehemently disagree with the bulk of these choices. Kicker is repetitive, but great... it may even be better than Yie Ar Kung Fu, and I loved me some Yie Ar Kung Fu. Scramble was released in 1981, and while its age is obvious, its influence on later shooters is just as evident. Some of the other games listed, admittedly, are an acquired taste. Some examples of arcade games that I personally would avoid include The Glob, Targ/Spectar, Crime Fighters, Exciting New! Pac-Man Plus, Rastan Saga II, Time Killers, Downtown, and Magmax. The only use I ever had for Magmax is filching coins out of a defective unit at an arcade. Eee, now I can afford to play some GOOD games!
For me, acquired taste takes a little more time than I'm comfortable doing with the projects I run. I feel like if I ONLY played some of these, or even grew up in an era where they were my only options, I think I would be more appreciative of them, but I don't particularly like them. Oh god, you reminded me of Magmax LMFAO. I greatly disdain Nichibutsu games, period; they are a wonky company.
Just a heads up, but in Magician Lord you had a rough time because you thought the forms you can turn into were more powerful. Spoiler, no death speedruns stay default magician through the whole run.
MAGICIAN LORD. On top of the problems you brought up. It is an ugly, ugly, ugly game! I'm losing my vision rapidly and if I don't see another thing the rest of my life. I won't miss a single Pixel in this game. Wow you're right on about the side scrolling shooters. What a bellyache. Also, try Ordyne. A namco side scroller it's not aged well. But I think it's fun and a nice late '80s representation of the genre lots of laughs in your videos man. Keep that rolling man. Thanks again.
@@Fortefyre Thanks! I can't say I agree with all your choices, but I do respect your opinion. And since you asked what games we feel people should stay away from, I feel that way about Avengers, or Hissatsu Buraiken as it's known in Japan, which Capcom released in 1987. And no, Avengers has nothing to do with Marvel. It's basically the child that Kung-Fu Master and Gun.Smoke had together, with the overhead view of Gun.Smoke combining with the hand to hand combat of Kung-Fu Master, whose creator also created Avengers, which means it had the potential to be a great beat-em-up, but why did he think an overhead view was a good idea?
Yeah, Magician Lord is straight up BS. Your character is too slow late game, you might as well play haunted castle. No wonder It was one of two options for 'pack in' games for the NEO GEO Gold package. They were desperate to get rid of the cartridges (my theory anyway). The other 'pack in' game was 'Nam 1975, which is pretty good IMO. When the NEO GEO was released, there was a Silver package: one controller, no game $499, Gold package: two controllers, one game (ML or Nam 75) $649... I believe. Memory is terrible now.
@@Fortefyre those are just nasal sprays. Very few side effects and drug interactions. Check with your MD first of course, but those have done wonders for me.
Turbo Force is the worst vertical shooter you’ve ever played? At least it is until you play D-Force for the SNES, whether it be in a stream or on your own time.
Funny story, so I thought it was bad on MAME with real buttons, I actually went to an arcade in Yokohama that had the original pressure buttons, and I don't know HOW in the fuck anyone played that.
Hyper Sports is one of the games I got as a gift as a kid I remember after watching this video i think I tried each sport a few times and then traded with a friend for a chocolate bar
I guess it took a while for the aero fighters developers to get their shit together because once they did man did they make good games. I always thought magician lord was sort of a gimmick game, like woah look at our crazy graphics but, the game sucks..
had a shitass time with The Tower of Druaga tbh, its one of those early action RPGs that definitely shaped the JRPG genre as we know it and because of it its kind of janky but its JUST. SO. SLOW!!!!! and you have no clue what to do to get the proper ending unless you look up a guide of some kind, wasted too much time and energy trying to beat it.

I have fond memories of playing Scramble back when I was 8 or 9 years old. It may not feel special now, but in 1981 it was ground-breaking.
Oh I'm sure! The early 1980s was a MAGICAL time for arcade games, no doubt about that!
I hear cunnilingus helps with throat issues. If it doesn't work, at least you had fun.
I can confirm this does not help lmao.
Darn!
I don’t know why, but I like Shao-Lin’s Road. It’s a fun beat up folks without thinking. Haha.
I can see it's wasting time charm lol.
Part of the fun with Hyper Sports is kicking your friends ass. Don't forget your taped up pencils or comb.

I wanted to make up for the business last week :)

I cannot stand Magician Lord, it's a walking coin-eater, and it's the embodiement of the worst aspects of SNK all wrapped into one ugly package haha.
Did part 1 get taken down? I looked for it and didn’t see it.
It shouldn't have. It probably doesn't have a "part" on it. Let me see if maybe it didn't get put under the playlist.

God that's a horrible collection economy for then, and even worse now.
Even though I loved them at the time, all fighting games should be on this list. The difficulty was always set to hard. 😡
And not even a fun hard, like a MEAN hard.
You taking anything for the morning phlegm? Flonase? Nasacort? Using either of those twice a day can help.

Not sure why it's so hyped up. I played it once and quit after like 5 minutes. Just boring as hell.
