- The U-2 program celebrates its 60th anniversary in September 2015. Since its first flight in 1955, the U-2 program has seen tremendous changes to its airframe and technology. Today's U-2S serves as the most capable, reliable and survivable ISR platform available. The U-2S has 80 percent airframe life remaining, and is operationally capable to fly beyond 2045. I was still unsure if I should buy this or a normal AWACS but this ad convinced me to go with this! Thanks Lockheed.
Be careful ordering from this vendor, I got scammed. I ordered an U-2S through their website, but it never arrived. When I checked track & trace it kept saying the order was held by customs, and when I contacted the seller they gave me vague excuses about import permits. 0/5 will not buy again.
LOL! This baby's a bargain. Pressurized cockpit. Space suit. I'll even throw in some space food if you take her home today!
ask for black , black really stands out.
But the U2 can’t fly off my nuclear powered aircraft carrier
@@seanpruitt6801Sure it can. The U-2’s got a short takeoff roll. Unless the wingspan is the problem?
The fact that, even in 2022, with all the updated sensor suites, electronic countermeasures, and electronic warfare systems, the U-2S is STILL equipped with its absurdly high-resolution wet film camera is amazing to me.
What a truly timeless design.
It's truly amazing that the same basic design aircraft is not only still flying over 70 years since its introduction, but especially the fact that it will continue service for many more years. Aircraft like the U2 and the B-52 are truly in a league of their own.

you will Americans known for their matching designs,as iPhone 4,5,6,7,8,9,10 ! :))))

Lockheed Martin's designers r so damn on point, slick, neat. such a beauty.
Kelly Johnson was an absolute genius.
An amazing man.
jwrappuhn71 I think KJ was an Alien :))))
There are few people that are so unknown which have made such an astonishing feat and impact as Kelly Johnson. A true hero.
Yeah. Those were all Kelly's planes in the intro to the video: the Lightning, the Shooting Star, the Starfighter and, of course, the U-2. There never was anyone comparable to Johnson; a customer working with him said "That Swedish son of a bitch can see air." Johnson took that, quite properly, as a compliment.
jwrappuhn71 Johnson was a genius.....but Lockheed is as corrupt as hell.
I'll like to say Congratulations to all who work at Lockheed Martin and the USAF on the 60th Anniversary of the U-2 program. "We never forget who we're working for."
Andrew Jacklin but lockheed has no problem putting the screw on the taxpayers by overbilling the taxpayers to build it!
Thank you for your service
honestly, if that means taking america into fake wars, then sure. fight for what you believe in, the truth is that the american government lied to its own people .
@@foxytv1592 No, their were most likely WMD's in Iraq (I.E. Chemical weapons), and Al-Qaeda attacked the World Trade Center.
@@fasterthandragons7908 There were chemical weapons in Iraq. "WERE" being the key word. Mysteriously, chems showed up in Syria a decade later (this was written about). And there were soldier accounts (very few) of being gassed in combat during GW1... likely, mustard/ burn agents... no fatalities, reports were silenced... else Bush (Globalist) would be forced to pop a low-alt. EMP-cracker over Bag... as threatened. Also, "Gulf War Syndrome" was later suspected to be effects of germ-fare (bio-weapons). Don't recall what came of it, other than a few doctors finally diagnosed it and were able to treat victims with therapeutics/common meds in right combinations.
And gove DID lead us into unnecessary wars. Not all, but certainly some were about money. Others started off well-intended and became about money.
Buckle up... the S is about to HTF.
Dang can't wait for my order, Thanks Lockheed.
Kelly Johnson would be proud to see his plane still flying today.
This is the best advertisement I have ever seen.
Yeah so good in fact that I might get one
Saab has better in my opinion
I didn't know the U-2 had been upgraded that much, very cool ! I know the basic design was based on the Lockheed F-104, heavily modified but Lockheed took a proven deign and made it great for surveillance. the SR-71 is still my fav though.

Proof that engineering simplicity is superior.
ⵔⵓⴽⴰⵜⴽⴰⵜ which is why the A10 warthog can't be beat For shit hit's the fan danger close CAS missions!
Snarky horseshit they used them to rescue a downed f117 stealth bomber pilot shot down from a SAM missile not to mention they can hit targets from a great distance away from manpads with standoff weapon systems another sexual intellectual i see!
Simplicity like the U2 and A10 might be fine when you go against underequipped, badly trained armies using 30+ years old weaponry. Or just outright terrorists like ISIS. And to be honest, I'd be surprised if the U2 is actually a "simple" aircraft.
Yet against any enemy with modern missile systems, the U2 isn't of much use. Heck, even the fricking Blackbird, the fasted jet engine driven aircraft ever built, was partially mothballed because enemies acquired the ability to gun down the aircraft.
Mike yes your right but when a shit storm hits and everything else is jammed, hacked or glitching bet your sweet ass an A10 will be flying electronics are nice when they work but when they don't you better have something that still works with out them!
the blackbird woulnt be shot down even now, but sattelites do a far better job than the costly plain could do...
Amazing, so it's like a mainframe, the more it ages, the more capable it becomes.
I was 12 when I learned about this plane and it's been four years and I'd still love the chance to fly it when I join the air force
CKJ- Genius utility platform designed for continual upgrade.
I worked on U-2's for 10 years and the SR-71 from 85 until it was deactivated from the USAF.
Thanks for your service.
1. Kelly Johnson was a superb leader, manager and engineer, a true national asset, and an innovator without peer.
2. The U-2 family of surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft - and their dedicated personnel, concomitant systems, sensors, and ground equipments - have been a key link in our information superiority, a major asymmetrical nation and international security advantage, with over five decades of progressively increased ISR sophistication.
3. We hear very little of its accomplishments - appropriately, it is compartmented information - but even in the mid-Twentieth Century the U-2 was essential to ascertain capabilities and to infer intentions.
I’m quietly very proud of the twenty-two years I spent as a Lockheed Martin Aero manager . . . and in the two decades that preceded that work, I saw - as a Naval Officer - just how crucial such information superiority was.
Still beauty after all these years!
gotta love the fuckyou to the global hawk @ 1:37
My goodness, Lockheed Martin, did you really have to make this video so beautiful? It brings a tear to my eye, especially the music at the end. What a beautiful aircraft, what a beautiful video, and what a beautiful legacy of the U-2 and its dragon riders.
Fantastic. Thank you LockheedMartin.
First time saw it. Great. Stood the test of time.
Long-life design and really workable after 60 years. But be aware U2 early version shot down by SA-2 for couple of times from 1963-1968 during missions in mainland of PRC. Any new defence tool with U2S?
put in a laser distance meter from home depot, so the pilot can read the exact distance from ground while landing. (and no need for a car to drive behind to radio the eyeballed height to the pilot)
I'm getting emotional. This is such a nicely done video, it's sentimental. Go US!
Minus the hype....the S has turned it into more of a battlefield covert recon platform. As they say, you can never have too much intelligence.
Or as a family member who also served said, "Intelligence is its own weapon."
Kelly Johnson is the greatest aircraft designer ever, no one even comes close to him.
I dont know why but I love watching Lockheed Martin's Ads/commercials
I hope this legend will receive TALWS to make it even more survivable.
Now she is slated to retire.. She's seen her very first pilots have their children and childrens children fly her. She's flown with the Buff. She watched the phantoms over Vietnam she's watched over them all even her replacement. Who she watched its retirement happen. She's always kept us safe with out even knowing she was watching over us. Fairwell guardian angel
There are several other long lasting aircfaft like this: the B-52, the TU-95/142, and several others.
C-130 Hercules ?
Beautiful spy plane and I want it to remain operational for many more decades, and never need to be replaced unnecessarily.
Such a beauty, hope I get the chance to take off in one before it gets retired

Beautiful!!!
A bit ironic to have the video begin with a quote from Eisenhower - the same man who sharply criticized the industrial military complex.
If you have been blessed to grow up and live free in America remember this video. Remember that every aircraft you see in it came out of the mind of Clarence "Kelly" Johnson. Then the next time you find yourself holding a glass of good bourbon raise it and remember Kelly.
I am so proud of U2s
I have to say it still looks pretty sexy, regardless of the bulky additions.
Man this really put me in the mood to spy on my enemies
Lockheed they will always be the best of the best

Francis Gary Powers loved this plane and believed in it. He wrote so in his book "Operation Overflight."
Surprised these haven't been made into retrofitted drones
Marvelous piece of engineering😍
60 years! Wow.
The program is 60 years old. The planes being flown today are all produced in the 1980s, and are some 40 percent larger than the original jet.
Thank you Kelly Johnson R. I. P. Sir
I wish I could own one of these planes
This is awesome but imagine what the sr72 and b21 can do more
Put proper landing gear!
Performance cost is too much for it to be worth adding stable landing gear. + U2 pilots get to drive cool cars because of it so they aren't gonna complain.
i agree put landing gear on the wings to so it is stable
You don't understand the weight is too much for what the plane is meant to do and with the areodynamic changes on the wings the planes preformance would be seriously impeeded.
Lockheed Skunk Works didn't put wing-mounted landing gear on the U-2 to decrese its weight and increase its altitude
Why? Do YOU fly them ? Educated guess says no. Less weight in undercarriage means they can carry more mission useful load.
very good video,INTEGRITY..
Lockheed is still the best design oriented ship builders in the world
Go Martin !!!!!!!
And that is only what they want to tell you about the latest capabilities. Anybody want to bet there isn't a whole lot more.

You gotta hand it to lockheed tho, they are a legitimately cool company passonate about their creations

Some 20 years later some guy will form a band and will name it U2S....
So what exactly is the role of the newest U-2. It's certainly not a spyplane. Is it like another AWACS? Or they said ISR? What is that and how is it different?
s400 will say ---- AHHHHHHHH another u2 lets have a blast mate
a upgraded u2 wont have to get anywhere near where a s400 operates to use its sensors....idiot.

Can we have a video on the TR-3B please.

....oooh!....below the belt....

I wonder how many foreign leaders see this video and immediately think “oh shi-“ the Americans did it again.
Is the U2 air frame still in production or are existing air frames being upgrade or are they continuously modified as needed?
U2-s we’re built in the 90’s and have been updated several times since
"We pick an old aircraft, we add more a new engine, some fuel tanks and three tablets for the cockpit." -LockheedMartin making profits.
Our DoD will need these aircraft for treaty work and other manned airspace recon requirements. Most U-2s currently are pretty well updated and maintained but why not have a limited run of brand new aircraft if the cost over the next 15-25 years is lower than just fixing as well modifying an aging aircraft.
I agree with your comment nonetheless :)
It's a different size, different geometry, different materials, different antennas, different life support. It's a lot of stuff.

How similar is today’s U-2 to those used in 1955? Or is it a completely different aircraft with the same name?
The original U-2 was the "C" model. Todays U-2S is very similar. Many of the Lockheed Martin frames to build the fuselage are used today

How do I buy one?
I thought a drone convertion would be more cost effective in the long run than putting the risk of a pilot's life in danger.
+steinarne79 Drones won't be usable against a modern adversary.
+John Smith a drone version of that plane? i cant see how a pilot safe at main land cant do the same. its not a combat airplane..
+steinarne79 It absolutely is an aircraft designed and upgraded to operate in contested airspace. The truth is that an unmanned jet would be of no use in a war against a near-peer adversary that has the capability to destroy or degrade the satellite systems necessary to operate them (both GPS and datalinks). And we're closer to cold fusion than to the AI required to make real-time autonomous decisions.
The GlobalHawk UAV has been contending with the U-2 for funding for a number of years. Having worked as a contractor on parts of both, the UAV (distinct from a drone) can do a major part of the U-2s mission. Both rely on communications for retasking, but the sensors configured for the U-2 have often been superior, and other differences in capabilities make it difficult to choose one and lose the unique benefits of the other.....
Airstrike Copy Ah, but they are there. Unlike a Drone, a UAV can bring the pilot along just as if he were there on the scene. In the case of the Predator, there actually is a fully qualified pilot somewhere else in the world controlling and flying the vehicle.
The Predator was designed for low altitude surveillance, but was relatively quickly adapted for weapons delivery. So it's great advantage is weapons delivery almost anywhere in the world quickly and without danger to any personnel.
The Global Hawk on the other hand is uploaded with a flight plan and sensor control plan and then can stay aloft for more than a day downlinking data to a number of distributed grind stations. Even the U-2 has been programmed this way for more than 30 years - once the pilot reaches the desired coordinates, control is handed off to the aircraft which then makes all the programmed turns and sensor window and direction adjustments
All this capability of defense is rendered useless when you have the clear and present danger that currently occupies your White House. Defense is about defending those qualities that make your country great, your democracy, Your empathy, your recognition of the treatment of those who Have not been treated fairly, Your recognition in the past of the treatment of blacks and those who are treated as slaves in your country. In the past you have recognized that you were not a perfect country, but you have had the honesty to try and do something to make your country better for all people. You have your faults, but you have inspired countries like mine in Australia.
Yet right now there is a corruption eating at your country and everything it stands for from the inside Out. All these defensive capabilities come to nothing with that Clear and present danger in your White House that is only beholden to Vladimir Putin. You have lost the war even before knowing it was declared by the Russians on you and us in the West. They funded BREXIT to destroy the United Kingdom. Soon they will no longer exit when it breaks up, with Scottish Independence.
I really do fear as an Australian citizen for my future, and the future of my Daughter, because of that Monster. who currently occupies your presidency ever gets back in after your election in November. It will be the end of everything that you and your country has fought for over almost 250 years. It will be twilight's last gleaming. it will be the end of your democracy. If you want to see your future, look to Argentina, before Juan Peron In the 1940s, it was an extremely rich and prosperous democratic country. Now it is a former shell of itself, where they had to live through the hyper inflation, the dictatorship, the Terror campaigns, We're people would disappear and we were to find out later, drugged and thrown out of airplanes at 30,000 feet. You can bet that is what Trump wants for your country. He is no lover of your Democracy, and like the worst of the Sukano regime in Indonesia, He's a bloodsucking leech using your country to enrich himself.
Yet for me in Australia, I do remember very much developing military avionics during the cold war in England that had to survive close Nuclear weapon detonations. Whilst a nuclear war became very real during that time, under Trump I really fear that it will become a certainty, as he will pick a fight with China. As he has shown no care or concern for the number of people dying in your country due to the Covid virus, that demonstrates I capacity for global cruelty, and as he is asked about why he cannot use nuclear weapons, if he gets back in, he will use them.
