Geralt’s Witcher senses already told him Ciri had no breathing, pulse, or warmth; him opening the door and turning her body was basically a desperate wish that his years of razor sharp senses were wrong.

This scene just hit me so damn hard even though I knew ciri wouldn't, can't be dead ... How he gets up, wants to run away, but realises there's no running away and falls to the bed...

Imagine this as the bad ending that occurs when you take too long because you finished all gwent quests first.
So that was what Geralt's pained expression was about. A flashback to all the forgoing his quest for Gwent...
I'd cry. Luckily I checked wiki to ensure that was not the case.

I turn up 6 days later, some 3k more gold, several gwent games later, wearing fancy new bling armour being like "sup? You wanted me at midnight".

The look on Geralt's face when he sees Ciri is truly heartbreaking.
LawlFakers i literally cried i thought that's the end, end of chasing this far. But as firefly made her alive and when she raised her arm on the back of geralt, i thrilled with joy and smirked😄😍
Its literally Ciri's spirit that's been guiding him, not a firefly.
If it was someone with a history of being a crybaby, it wouldn't have made a difference, but the fact that this is Geralt, someone who would laugh off just about anything that hits him, this tough guy, creeps into the room as if he's deathly afraid of what he'll find in there (he was), then even as he saw her lying there and it's like 100% chance it's her, he still has to turn her over, because I bet his mind was still in denial and was convincing him that maybe it's someone else who happens to also have ashen hair and when he turns her over he'll see it's obviously not her, but when that doesn't happen and you see him finally come to accept that it is her, you see it all hit him at once and yes, I agree with you that it was just truly heartbreaking to watch. They did such an amazing job with this scene...
But the good thing about hitting us with that kind of emotion was that I had the biggest smile on my face during their conversation in front of the fireplace. Oh, I was SOOO happy, and wished they could have just sat there and chatted forever, but obviously there were evil people about to do evil things so...
I thought for sure I was too late, I knew there was a bad ending in the game and I thought I got it by fucking about with sidequests too much. My eyes were teary and then the light returned to Ciri and turns out she was alive. That didn't help my eyes any but instead of sadness the tears were of joy and relief. CDPR is such a great company, very few stories have sent me on such a pleasant rollercoaster of emotions as this game has.

Y'all are talking about his expression, which is very sad indeed, but the way he rocks the body afterwards is the one that gets me every single time.

Especially because: he‘s a witcher. His senses see just about everything. He knew she was dead before even opening the door, no heartbeat, no sound at all, no muscle reaction in the body whatsoever, so these weak steps towards her and rocking the body over was pretty much him praying that his senses are wrong.... once i realised that, the scene was even harder to bear

I love how the camera focusses on all the random objects in the room before it has Geralt turn her over. Really captures a sense of denial.
Jenny Sweeney it emphasizes that her dead body is the same as any other inanimate object. Just material, it hits hard. She’s as dead as a door nail and it’s heartbreaking
That door is the hardest boss in the game...

Gotta say... when I started this game, i had no clue about the witcher series, about the characters, the lore, the books, nothing. But CDproject made me understand and care for each and every one of these characters, despite being new to the series. I cried my eyes out at this scene. Storytelling. This is how you do it.
Same story with me. Now i cant stay away. I keep coming back to it.
Same with me, lead me to read all the books, replay the game many times. It’s not just a video game for me anymore.

there was something very sad about seeing geralt- a low on emotion monster slayer- being obviously devastated by the scenery... i was shook, omg... lay down, try not to cry, cry a lot

Geralt's had his tear dudcts mutated due to the transformations he underwent at Kaer Morhen. He can't blush either, though he feels like he would in the books.

Witcher 3 is currently my favorite game, and it deserved GOTY in 2015.
The game is about traveling to the end of the world to find someone you love, and then fighting to protect them, and helping them achieve their ultimate destiny. Beautiful, beautiful game.
Yes, and it shows the positive results of encouraging and supporting those you love instead of fearing so much it strangles them. Ciri succeeds when Geralt supports her, and will fail if you undermine her in attempts to protect her.
This deserves GOTY every year from 2015 onwards. Atleast till date I haven't come across a better game.

You've forgotten about the lesser of two evils. Many times this game throws incredibly hard moral decisions at you, what you choice is something you have to live with for the better or worse.

I actually feel that’s unfair xD Geralt is alone, Emhyr is an emperor, he’s got a great poker face, and hardly likes Geralt, hes not going to break down weeping in front of him. He was visibly upset though.

I actually thought ciri might be dead at this part of the game , started to tear up a little even. I was so glad she was alive, I can't believe I could care so much about a fictional character, ciri felt like my actual child and I didn't want any harm to come to her and wanted to protect her. Never has a game or other forms of media made me care so much for a fictional character. This was a masterpiece of a game, incredible work by CDPR.
Watching this in 2020 after countless of playthorugh. Still gave me chills.

Everything about this emotional scene is perfect, I'm in awe that CDRP managed to convey so much emotion with just movements.
How Geralt slowly turns her around, terrified, and then quickly drops his hand and moves backwards. His sad stumbling before he sits down and sinks together. And then picking her up and swaying back and forth like a father would with a baby or scared child.
I end up crying every time I see this scene and I'm not even ashamed. Watched 3 different playthroughs and I always tear up.
Surprised Ciri didn’t mention all the random bugs in the world where Eredin couldn’t find her.
Guess Eredin didn't dare follow her there for fear of randomly exploding cars or cars falling on top of him or whatever :P
I actually cried from this scene where he finds her inside. I invested all that time finding her, being one with geralt. Feeling his dispair thinking she was dead

apparently if the fps was set to 30, this doesn't happen.. there's a fix for it on nexus mods for 60fps, but I still get it.. not sure if the mod still works post patch.

I do not cry at movies, tv, etc., but, this game has inspired tears from me numerous times! It's so spectacularly well done. I have never been so entirely emotionally invested in a game before.

Seeing Geralt hesitating to walk through the doorway to confirm what his Witcher senses told him. Seeing him step back when he rolled Ciri's lifeless body over. The look of dispair and grief wash over him. Then a father rocking the lifeless body of his daughter in his arms. Tears filled my eyes, but they turned to tears of joy as Ciri woke up and hugged him back. From the depths of sadness to suddenly raising up into a happy reunion. A powerful moment in video game history.
The most emotionless mortal became the most emotional mortal. You can really see Geralt's love as a father here like what Quill saw when Yondu sacrificed himself to save him.
One of the rare times I was actually sobbing over a controller...

I was choked up when Geralt thought she was dead, was rocking her body. But then she wakes up and that flash to their younger selves running for each other in a field, that's when the tears started.

What happened to Winter's Blade?
When I found Ciri, I genuinely thought I lost the game and this is the bad ending.
In my play through my heart was crushed at 10:23, and then I jumped for joy at 11:19.
The Witcher plays with your emotions like its a 4 year old with a handgun.
I'm not a person that cries like at all (ESPECIALLY in games/movies cause I know it's all fiction.)
There are 2 moments in games that actually get to me.
The mansion level in Sanitarium *almost* got me the first playthrough, probably will again in the future cause damn.
But this moment right here, ALWAYS makes me cry every time I reencounter/rewatch it.
This is a man, that is supposedly 100% stripped of his emotions and personal feelings towards anything. He cares about Yen/Triss depending on who you pick, but it's this specific moment, the ONLY time in any of the massive 3 games, where you can see true, genuine sorrow and devastation on his face. He looks so defeated, even moreso than when the beautiful Vizima was burning down in flames and his close friends were in danger. THE SECOND he feels her hugging him back, you can see tears in his eyes knowing that she's actually okay. And it gets you thinking, damn, how much this man really loves and sacrifices anything for his daughter, blood or not. It's such a powerful moment, probably the strongest I've personally seen so far in ANY game.
It takes some seriously good writing to get me crying over someone that doesn't exist.
I'm worried I have an unhealthy emotional attachment to these characters.

@@mikhailgorbachev7851 Basically Avallac'h forced Ciri to stay in his world and would only let her leave if she had a child with the elven king. But the king hated humans so he drugged and sexually teased Ciri for several nights until Eredin poisoned him.

Witcher's can feel emotion, just not to the point where they will be overcome by them. It really shows just how much Ciri meant to him since seeing her "dead" broke him.

Dammit. Made me cry again. The dual embrace montage tied with the music really gets me. Beautiful scene!
The look on his face, the low music when he stands by the door for a few seconds before slowly stepping over to the bed where she lay knowing that his daughter was dead, purposely disbelieving his witcher senses that told him from the door that she was gone because his human heart could not handle if she were . The way he rocked her lifeless body in his arms absolutely killed me, this was the first time playing the game and knew nothing of what would happen.
That scene... i never forget it! Cryed like a... well you know what im talking about! You have to read the books guys before plaing this trilogy to complitely dive in this story!
Any notion you might have of treating Ciri like someone that needs protection goes completely out the window once you read the books.

There are two parts in the games that if you haven't read the books, it really doesn't land as emotionally as if you have read the books. The first, is shortly after Geralt is beat to near death by Vilgefortz as Ciri flees through Tor Zireal and the tower collapses afterwards. Geralt is recovering from his thrashing and a broken femur when he learns that the tower collapsed and that they did not find Ciri. He starts to hyperventilate, and the forest spins around him, not from the pain in his leg but from the realization that she's gone. He believes she's really dead, and he sinks into the panic of it all. The way the book describes this, is nearly identical to how CDPR portrayed his finding of Ciri here and believing that she is dead.
The second part is after Vesemir is killed, essentially trying to save Ciri from the Hunt and during his funeral she says something sharply to Geralt who suggested that she hides and flees once again. She says, "you don't know what it's like, to run and watch everyone you've ever cared about die for you" (paraphrasing) and it is a throwback to the trail of death she leaves behind her wherever she's been. All of her companions that were killed by the bounty hunter and his ilk, her lover, her friends, then in the game - the one called Craven died trying to defend her, now Vesemir. She says in response to Geralt's suggestion, "No. I will flee no more." And if you did not know about the entire book history you may not understand why she's made this important declaration. SORRY THIS IS SO LONG BUT I GEEK OUT LIKE NO OTHER WHEN I WATCH THIS SCENE AND AFTER 3 YEARS I STILL DIE INSIDE WHEN I WATCH THIS SCENE. : ....O

Finished the game today for 2nd time, still teared up a bit to this scene.
I have been playing video games for a long time now and I've gotta say,..this is easily one of the most memorable moments for me in video game history.
-When he turns around and his lip quivers
-When he picks up what he assumes is Ciri's corpse and starts rocking back and fourth, a sign of enormous distress
Heart shattering
This scene compared to Emhyrs reaction of Ciri's death is the reason I always go with the Witcher ending. Emhyr never truly cared for Ciri, he merely wanted to exploit her powers like the rest.
Geralt truly cared for her like a father. The way he just sways while holding her seemingly lifeless body shows so much emotion of how much loser her truly impacts him. Even in the empress ending you can see his sadness in knowing he once again lost her.
Actually emhyr wanted her to take his place so he can retire it had nothing to do with her power
2 years later this scene still makes me cry a lot
Thank you so much for uploading this. Just reached that part yesterday (far too close to midnight) and pretty much broke down the moment Geralt hesitated at the door. The game had a couple of really emotional moments long before that, but his whole body language, the subtle movements as he stands by the bed? Had to stop for a bit. The game pretty much tricked me into thinking that I had triggered the bad ending or something, gave me massive flashbacks to he suicide mission in Mass Effect 2... (which didn't stop when the Battle approached, honestly). Again, thanks a LOT for this, I really needed to watch the whole scene again.

Whoever created the mechanics for the animation did a superb job
You know what's the saddest part about this is how deep they go with how much the mutations have affected geralt. In this scene his heart shattered he felt it but couldn't demonstrate it. He wanted to cry and shed tears of grief and couldn't, the only thing he was able to do was to try to mourn in silence. Had Ciri spirit not returned i think geralt would've died right there next to her by letting himself to be devoured by monsters.
There is imo 3 very emotionally taking scenes in this game, this is one of them

The Mighty .Chicken My satisfying moment was punching guy in Cabaret what he said 4 Priscilla and beating Whoreson. I left him live, i know what happen to scums. He reminds me to Darko Brevic 4m GTA IV, just Darko sold his friends to can buy drugs 4 self.
***** Most satisfying for me was killing Imlerith, Eredin and Whoreson. Thing with Whoreson is that whatever happens to him if you leave him alive, he will still kill more people (I killed him so that's just what I think) before he's done, I'd rather kill him.

It’s 2021. My 8th time playing this game and this scene still hits me. I’ve never loved any game more than this.

Out of the whole entire game. This is my favorite scene. This is where Geralt shows that Ciri is his daughter.
Yeah, it's wonderful, does justice to their relationship in the books when she was little, it's quite charming
Finally got this point in the game tonight. I knew she would live, but my heart still dropped at this scene. Never saw this video prior. Crazy how a game well written like Witcher can make you feel so emotionally invested. A true RPG when you have become the character you played. Definitely teared up too.
The music always brings waves of memories of this whole game

I can't stop watching this scene.... And i cry everytime.... This game is beautiful.
One of the few that makes me cry, is this.
I cried when I saw this scene for the first time but no matter how many times I replay it I always get goosebumps.
When I played through this I SOBBED even though I knew Ciri was okay, I had even assumed the firefly thing was her spirit but Geralt's reaction still destroyed me. It didn't matter that I knew she was okay, watching him lose his daughter was just too much.
Oh man how would i love to replay every single scene in this game as i haven't seen it before
