Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side Introduction - Sega CD

- Ah... Eternal Champions... if you've played your share of Sega titles from back in the day and you've never seen or heard of this game, it's a little creepy to think that you wouldn't be alone. Eternal Champions is, on a technical level, one of the best 2D fighters ever created and was one of the titles the folks over at Sega took a lot of pride in.
Originally a good game released for the Sega Genesis back in 1993, it garnered a lot of popularity (touted as a Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat killer by some) and attention (read: worried individuals over the game's ideals and violence). Gamebooks were made, stickers were made, collectible slurpee cups were made, subpar spin-offs were made (Chicago Syndicate for Game Gear and X-Perts for Genesis), even a Sega Saturn title was being planned. Yet, as popular as it "seemed" Eternal Champions was, it never quite took off like it should. The news about the canceled third game in the main series proved to be tragic even to some of the folks at Sega. What happened? What's Eternal Champions anyway?
Eternal Champions is sort of a blend of Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, but with a lot of personality of its own and incorporated many modes and advanced features for a fighter of the time combined with detailed visuals and a great soundtrack... and of course, a bucketload of violence. Besides adding stage fatalities of sorts and giving characters plenty of moves, the game was also a bit more unusual because it took gave its characters more history and backstory than most other fighters of the time, seperating itself from the brand of fighters that only focused on the ***-kicking portion of the game. In short, the game adamantly wanted to show that it was the total package.
Later, they'd make another game for the ill-fated Sega CD known as Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side. It took everything from the original and expanded it full circle, creating a title that was far more than a minor expansion. It featured many new fighting modes, a lot of new characters, expanded plot, cinemas, new methods to kill opponents, improved visuals/animations and sound (with HUGE characters... I sometimes can't believe the game looks so good) and loads of secrets you could find. The game even let you save these goodies to the system and you could keep them for later, something most fighting games of the time didn't do. Some who have played the game don't hesitate to call it perfection.
There was one thing that usually brought the game down considerably in the eyes of critics however: the difficulty. You know a game is rigged when the computer can pretty much react to every move you'll ever make before you make it on the easiest difficulty setting. It's this element that turned off a considerable bunch from the game. Indeed, the single player experience is faulty (putting it mildly), but there are tricks you can use to win. Still, I'd be lying to myself if I said the single-player was anything but annoying (just face the Dark Champion...). Against a friend however, this is one of the deepest fighting games to play from the mid 90s. I'd even call it close to perfection if some of the mechanics were tweaked (some moves don't work the way they should and lead to some really cheap hits).
Anyway, you can learn the general story watching this video. Enjoy.
I actually think this storyline is really nice, the depth for every year and character is truly well written.
This game should return, is one of the most complex 90s Fighter, some tweaks for new era and it could be really nice
Yes scream this at the sega team
Would love for Sony to resurrect it like Xbox One did with Killer Instinct
I remember hearing somewhere that the games creator beloved that a fighting game shouldn’t skip out on the story. And I agree. I liked the detail in the plot. It just sucks that the actual gameplay isn’t very good
@@LilCyco223 Fresh comments? That's what 👀thought. Lol.
@@goliathbroodia942 What tf are you talking about?
Eternal Champions needs a new installment! Superb writing and lore. 😊
Imagine what an HD remake would be like. It would rival Killer Instinct and MK
Masterpiece. The greatest fighting game of all-time. Beyond asinine how Sega of Japan sabotaged this series out of spite.
Fun fact during 1994 a US animated studio pitched a Eternal Champions cartoon series to compete with the Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat cartoons. But for some reason Sega didn't give the studio the green light.
That would've been *AWESOME!* 😭😭😭💔💔💔
I would've loved to see it.....
Correct that: Sega of Japan didn't give the studio the green light. Sega of America was down but because SoJ want Virtua Fighter to be the flagship fighter instead, they sabotage Enternal Champion success
@@Linkaro2 oh wow
@@Linkaro2 I'm talking about way before Sega of Japan decided to pull the plug which they did in late 1995
2:59 - I still remember seeing Riptide's ship for the first time, back in 1995. The graphics and music for that clip were so amazing that I let out a loud "Wow!"
This story with MK11 graphics and detail would be amazing
*Eternal Champion:* "So here's the story on all my champions...here's Ramses...here's Riptide...here's Raven...here's Dawson...."
*Dark Champion:* "Not so fast, my friend! You didn't notice our four new contestants...."
*Eternal Champion:* "I _literally_ just covered *_all four_*_ of the new guys!_ I even mentioned them _by name!_ Get the wax out of your ears before you start talking smack, Darky!"
...but other than that very minor quibble, this was a _wonderful_ intro, especially for its time! Can we have that long-awaited Eternal Champions 3 that you backburnered in order to work on that failed Virtua Fighter sequel, Sega? We're overdue here!
The third installment would have introduced the infernals (iirc)
He was talking about Chin, Blast, Thanatos, and Senator...
@@AmAxel35
This also doesn’t include the animal characters though.
@austinreed7343 iirc only the chicken is canon? And not even significant to the plot. Nothing indicates the others were anything more than joke characters.
@@AmAxel35
The owl was the only one with any plot impact, but all of them seemed canon.
5:22 the Eternal Champion and Dark Champion are revealed!
this needs to be a movies or a tv series
Never played it neither heard of it till now, but I'm actually impressed, very nice intro!
Why hasn't there been more installments of this game? I personally love a good time travel story. And the way Sega handled it here amazes me.
The reason there weren't more games is because while Sega of America was willing to support the series, Sega of Japan wasn't and they asked everyone from both departments to fully support the Virtua Fighter series instead, since that series was going through rough times with the delayed second game. So any plans for a third installment of the series were cancelled.
I don't know why Trident deserves to be saved. He let his opponent who was literally in front of him just go around and pushed a pillar behind his back while he was just standing still like a dumbass😂
man I wanna play this game so bad right now. One of my all-time favorites for sure.
00:20 = children fearing the ocean for the rest of their lives.
This game wasn't for kids, tho.
Imagine this could be reimagined in MK X-11 style!
I really hope a new version of this is made for Wii, XBOX 360 and PS3.
GoBeyondDeath Or switch. Lol!
Or PS5
Y is this not a movie
Or a series. So much potential.
wait, I dont get it, if sparing these fighters form the deaths they were gonna have is key to saving the human race, they why make them fight each other at all? I know you need a reason for this to be a fighting game, but they put so much effort into making this story work then threw that plot hole in there XD
The Eternal Champion is not necessarily there to save mankind, but to facilitate mankind changing their fate through one of their own. He would be wasting his energy if he constantly had to step in, especially with the Dark Champion meddling with things on top of man screwing himself. The contest gives EC the best odds to pick the one who will spark mankind to save themselves.
@@goonerbear8659 ....huh.....
It's explained in the first game that he only has enough power left to bring one of them back to life, hence the contest. Not sure why that tidbit was left out here.
Rutawind
Yeah. Since all of them were great fighters ET gave all of them a literal fighting chance. Instead of picking one himself. Not sure why they left out your point either lol.
What they said. The Eternal Champion can only return one of the fighters to life, and the contest is his way of making sure that the one he sends back is the most fit to survive. If he just randomly picked one - say, Xavier - but Xavier didn't really have what it takes to survive, then Xavier would return to his life only to immediately screw up, get grabbed by the same mob and burned to death all the same. And then the Champion can't send anyone else back, and the human race is totally screwed.
(EDIT: And the time that all these champions spend in the Eternity Complex helps make them more fit to survive, come to think of it. For example, while Slash is hanging around in the Eternity Complex, fighting Xavier and everyone else, Slash learns how to make fire from Xavier. So if Slash proves himself by winning the contest and beating everyone, the Eternal Champion sends Slash back to 50,000 BC, Slash uses what he learned and saves himself from death by lapidation by making fire _on the spot,_ the tribe decides to listen to Slash for a change, and Slash makes prehistoric people more awesome long before they were scheduled to be awesome. And there's something in there about all the world becoming one tribe, no war, whatever. Thanks, Xavier!)
(Now, if only RAX could teach Slash the finer details of fabricating cybernetic implants....)
And yes, they could have illustrated that point a bit better in the sequel, just for any new players who missed the first Eternal Champions.
Why didn’t they get into any crossover games after the fact?
Give it Tekken game play and graphics this be a dope game
I read somewhere that the original creator of the series passed away about 3 years ago, so I don't know if another game will be made.
WTF was up w/that intro @ the beginning?
My favorite 4:26
5:11 rax coswell
00:46 Cinematic begins
Released First On Génesis™ AND THen For Sega CD™ With Cinemátic Cutscenes
I could never get into this game. I think it was due to the control and AI.
Such a long and drawn-out intro it's terrible, it's almost just as bad as the game.
Your face is bad.
Who came here for the deep water logo from tv tropes
Me
Is that "Mako" doing the voice of the Eternal Champion? Of course it is.
