The problem is that social media companies are more like public utilities than news publishers. Imagine if Verizon blocked phone calls or Con Ed refused to provide electricity to people they disagreed with politically. This all started back in the late 1800s when Western Union routinely censored telegrams containing political speech they disagreed with. The government created legislation that classified companies like Western Union as common carries. They decided that If you were going to offer your services to the public that you had to treat all information equally. Then when the telegram gave way to telephones they were added to the list as well, so why should social media be any different?

Google is not like this at all, obviously, they cannot directly delete videos for no reason, that's is illegal in many ways. However, what we suspect Google may be doing is boosting up certain types of articles and videos so more people view them, hence affecting the election. And if your wondering, the difference between Google and Twitter is that Google is so much bigger and have so much more influence that they have much more strict regulations. The government is waiting for a reason to take action. That's why what they do is more low key than what twitter has been doing.

The problem is that social media companies are more like public utilities than news publishers. Imagine if Verizon blocked phone calls or Con Ed refused to provide electricity to people they disagreed with politically. This all started back in the late 1800s when Western Union routinely censored telegrams containing political speech they disagreed with. The government created legislation that classified companies like Western Union as common carries. They decided that If you were going to offer your services to the public that you had to treat all information equally. Then when the telegram gave way to telephones they were added to the list as well, so why should social media be any different?

Google is not like this at all, obviously, they cannot directly delete videos for no reason, that's is illegal in many ways. However, what we suspect Google may be doing is boosting up certain types of articles and videos so more people view them, hence affecting the election. And if your wondering, the difference between Google and Twitter is that Google is so much bigger and have so much more influence that they have much more strict regulations. The government is waiting for a reason to take action. That's why what they do is more low key than what twitter has been doing.
