A funny thing to note, the main villain of the first game is Junken, which in Japanese is the name of "Rock, Paper, Scissors". So in a weird way, it kind does make sense that he has to play it to beat some of the bosses. Plus the fact that Alex's main weapon in that game is his giant fist, is another play towards the good old "Rock, Paper, Scissors" game.
Back in the 80s they had a Master System with Alex Kidd in Miracle World for try out in our local mall. I went there almost every day to play this game. It has one of the most iconic video game soundtracks ever and it still comes back out of the depths of my brain from time to time to just to remind me of that by pleasing my inner ear.
Thank god They should take a break from Sonic and mind on the other characters significant to Sega like Jet set radio, Samba de amigo, Billy hatcher, etc

Remembering a forgotten hero. Dear Alex The Kidd. You couldn't defeat Super Mario in the Sega Nintendo wars becoming Sega's defeated mascot & become dethroned as Sega's mascot & forgotten in the annals of time losing the title as Sega mascot to Sonic The Hedgehog but the video game God's knew you went out fighting & you gave it your all. I'm so proud I shared a moment in time as a 5 year old child with you. Alex The Kidd, I'll never foget you ol' friend & on this day, I salute your memory.
Oh no, we can't have nudity on the Western gaming market. No! No, let's have the characters crushed beneath a gigantic anvil instead! Yeah, that'll be OK!

12:00 the Mark 3 is one of my favourite looking systems, looks so cool. Sega always made the best looking systems. My personal favourite looking system is the Japanese only Sega Saturn, the grey version with the blue buttons. Absolutely beautiful.
I swear that "Everyone going Atari" song in the first commercial at the start, it sounds like Weird Al Yankovic. Even lyrics sound like something he would write with how they flow and rhythm, or is it just me? Anyone?
I remember watching my friend make it to Alex Kidd in SEGA Superstars Tennis. Alex wrecked his face in record time. It was beautiful. And from my own first impressions of playing All-Stars Racing Transformed, I noticed that Alex was one of the better balanced racers at his default setting so I used to him almost the entire time. Plus, I mean... he's the eternal underdog, ya gotta love him. Being an American gamer, I had little to no exposure to the Master System because it simply wasn't sold in many places and didn't get the coverage that the NES did so I discovered Alex on the Genesis first with Enchanted Castle and thought that game was alright. It wasn't until the 2000s that I finally bought myself a Master System and Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Through retrospect is how I gained a fondness for the character and what SEGA tried to do with him. Maybe there's no place for him in today's market but I'd like to think they could make something fun with him if the timing and development team were right for the project. Much like with the people behind the upcoming Sonic Mania, you need minds at work that are die-hard fans of the original material. It sounds kind of cheesy but along with a new character design for him, I've imagined more than once having promotional videos with a remix of Kid Rock's "Bawitdaba" just to be able to sample the lyric "My name is Kid" into the moment of presenting Alex himself once again to the world. Heh.
Good review, most of the Alex Kidd reviewers claim the rock paper scissors is random. People who played know as you said the answers are the same unless you lose. Like Fatal Labyrinth reviews, most say that the levels are randomly generated and you can get stuck on one with no way up. There is actually always a way to the stairs though finding it can be tedius and the levels aren't randomly generated, they are already made and it puts you on an aleady made map at random.
Thanks for making this video! I had a serious Alex Kidd phase about 4 years ago, where I researched him extensively, and this was a nice summary of his history! I didn't know he had a board game, though...
Only really ever played Miracle world to death round my friends house because I never had a Sega console when I was a kid. Absolutely love the series now that I have my own master system. :) Great video buddy. Keep up the good work!

Thanks, I just discovered a tool for making Alex Kidd rom hacks called Kidd Ed. It has all kinds of options for changing the graphics, levels ect. It looks really cool.
So, why did they need an explanation in the storyline as to why his fist comically enlarges when he punches? A lot of cartoon characters use that effect to emphasize brute strength. They might as well explain why he flashes when he's invincible, or why he only has 3 frames of walking animation.

great retrospective mate, but I do have an answer to you not thinking Sega should bring the kidd back. I believe Alex Kidd could have a new 2D HD Platforming game that uses Miracle World / Enchanted Castle as it's base style game, but.... many Power-Ups could be collected to take advantage of the 'Lost Stars' aspect. Think about it..... How many 'Lost Stars' of Sega exsisting IP's do they throw away now-a-days? plenty. Imagen, collecting a 'Shinobi' Power-up turns Alex into 'Shinobi Kid' or how he was in Shinobi World with all the special moves that were given in that game?..... Fun fact: a lot of Alex Kidd's creative decisions from his first game make sense in light of his inspiration, Goku from the OG run of Dragon Ball. They're both tiny children who are trained martial artists, can shatter boulders and defeat most enemies with a single punch, can acquire the ability to fire destructive waves from their hands, and encorporate Jankenpo (Rock, Paper, Scissors) in their battles. He was even originally planned to attack with the Nyo-bo, Sun Wukong and Goku's weapon of choice.
"Mari-Oh" was named Kabuto in my game, and he is actually the first boss, not the last. You can even see on that beta screenshot that it says "Round 1". I had both Miracle World and Shinobi World and absolutely loved both. I think a modern 3d Alex Kidd game would work, actually

I had the first master system with Alex Kidd built in and Alex was eating a hamburger in my version also. It was a very late model obviously as the person my mum bought it off had a mega drive for ages before I got my master system for xmas.
The new Alex Kidd game for 2021 or so on consoles looks promising, with a retro mode included of the first game. Wish they released a Sega Master System Collection of Games like Sega does every console for the Genesis Collection Games.
Completely SERIOUS question here..... ive tried youtube'ing this but.... please tell me SLOPES. Whats the deal with the Mohawk Booty Shakin' villain?!?!?! I first seen it on GameSacks vid on Alex and thats how i came to learning about YOU and your channel, but seriously, did Sega create that badguy as a joke or was it a product of the times? I REALLY AM TRULY CURIOUS! And THANK YOU FOR YOUR UPLOADS! BETWEEN YOU, KIM JUSTICE AND LARRY BUNDYJR. YOU GUYS REPRESENT THE UK VERY WELL, THANK YOU. (This coming from a U.S. born youngster)
How can you consider Miracle World and Enchanted Castle superior games to Shinobi World? Shinobi World had good level design, no cheap one-hit deaths, and no rock-paper-scissors boss battles.
Juegazo.
I had a Sega Gamegear and it had about 100 games and out of those 100 or so games Alex Kidd was the only one worth playing and I hold him dear to my heart Rip Alex Kidd
I loved how Sumo Digital treated Alex in Superstars Tennis, Racing, etc. They took that old mass of 8-bit pixels and brought Alex into 3D exactly how I would have imagined it. If Sega ever does decide to take a punt on a new Alex Kidd game, I reckon they should give Sumo the reins and let them have at it.
+Blast Processing I 100% agree but like I said I think that so many mechanics would need to change before it was up to standards for new age gaming. huge thanks for commenting mate
I'm sure it's because of the theme song too. As kids we would have put crude lyrics to that little melody and in my head it was 'Alex the kid, Alex the kid something something something something-something'. That extra octave is what messed with our small minds!
Dan, I literally don't think you can impressive me anymore. Your standard of commentary and visuals is just unbelievably stunning. I absolutely loved that, perfect to watch and chill out to. I am in love with Alex Kidd in Miracle World, it is one of my all time favourites and I've completed it numerous times. I also have The Lost Stars and I got so confused after the first 7 levels when it just seemed to start again, I just do not understand why it is 7 levels doubled. I've never played High Tech World, it's just never grabbed me. You can die through falling down a hole in a set of stairs or eating too many hot dogs? WOW total PMSL, and it doesn't surprise me it was based on a crappy game! I have played Alex Kidd: BMX Trial via emulation and actually have a gameplay vid of it on dancentral as part of my Master System Compendium series but as you say, because it uses a specific paddle controller not available in other territories, I found even the controls on my computer keyboard difficult to work out and configure. Fun game though but yeah it does go on a bit. Alex Kidd looking like Martin Freeman's kid, I literally burst out laughing!!! I love your comparisons between different versions of the same game as well. I do have Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle but my Mega Drive cart has never worked so I played it via emulation, it was ok but nowhere near what Miracle World did for me. The only other game I absolutely loved as well as Miracle World is Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, it's fantastic, totally agree with everything you say. Love the ninja style, turning into fireballs, so so cool. I also love the fact he shows up in another game as a cashier talking about his fall from grace when Sonic took over, that's awesome, and again, your observations on cameos and little anecdotes where Alex was seen or showed up are so impressive. Just a perfect tribute to Alex Kidd, it couldn't be any better and as the words 'The End' flashed up I sat there feeling pleased and thoroughly entertained, job well done dude! :D
+Colossal Vids DUDE!!!! DUDE.... DUUUUUUUDE! That was amazing to read thanks so much :) I look forward to our colllaboration in 2016 :) seriously chuffed to bits :D
Really solid review! Makes excellent viewing as I bag board and box up my sonic the comics! Alex Kidd in the enchanted castle was my first ever megadrive purchase! Looking to revisit in a retro live stream soon :-)
I still remember the day I came home from school and my Dad had got me my Master System 2 all I had at first was Alex Kidd in Miracle World (as it was built in) and California Games
My mum and Dad used to do the same with Amstrad games if I ever got ill lol, I actually remember wishing I would get ill to get a bigger library hahaha
Personally i believe this game needs a sequel for the Wii U. It was very underrated. There should be new additions like new power ups, New levels, and a new controls for swimming
unpopolar opinion: Alex Kidd's in miracle world > Super Mario Bros >more variety with vehicles and various items, like the block that generates an invincible ghost if you pass over it >rpg-esque mechanics with money >the boss that aren't junken are... well, an attempt to a boss while mario... >no vehicles, not much variety >no money nor purpose on collecting money except for lives >the boss is literally "get past the brigde" repeated till the end and so on... com on i know it's unpopolar, it's just m,y opinion, but i can't be the only one that thinks it...
Also Mario has basically the same 3 levels over and over just with differenct colors while Alex goes horizontal, vertical and a lot of variety in its level design. Amazing especially considering the developers had only 3 months time from concept to final release of the game.
I got a chance to play the Mega Drive version in the early 90s and I liked the Master System game better. It just feels and plays right. And the Lovely Music sticks in my mind forever ^^
High Tech World was the first game I ever played on a Master System and loved it! I remember playing on my Genesis with the Master System converter and being blown away and by how hard it was for its time. I put many hours into the game before moving on to Altered Beast and the rest of the Genesis games. I still have fond memories of it. Yes, I eventually went to play the other games but wasn't as impressed as that one. Still a good franchise though.
The first game is almost great but WHY did they reverse the controls compared to Mario and just about every other platformer ever made? Glad they corrected that in Enchanted Castle.
7:40 The Lost Stars sequel was such a departure and disappointment as a fan of the first game, but became fun as a separate action game, compared to Miracle World which was an adventure game.
Absolutely fantastic video buddy. Great to watch :-) Alex Kidd in miracle world is one of my favourite games of all time. It's was actually built into some model one master systems and that's the one I had as a kid (you can see the console in some of my videos :-D) Ace stuff mate. Looking forward to more videos :-) All the best and have a great Christmas and New Year :-D

I would like to see Alex Kidd return! Imagine Alex Kidd done in VR like Astrobots! Do a couple of versions, one in VR and a platformer like Mario 3D world.
My god my entire childhood was based around a mega drive/snes counterfeit machine my mom got from a flea market vendor. i played SO many hours of Alex Kid enchanted castle I love it so much
"Martin Freeman in the Enchanted Castle" XD Sadly I agree that Alex Kidd probably wouldn't have a very successful comeback and should really be left to cameos/nostalgia pieces. Sega made soooooo many mistakes with the franchise which I feel have damaged the mascot beyond repair. It hurts to admit, but I still enjoy a few of his games :-) Excellent video as always!!!
Poor Alex Kidd. I miss those games, I used to play the first at my friend's house. This Summer at Comic Con they had the first game setup for people to play, no one could get past the first screen! Ha, ha! Also when I worked at AOL I noticed the logo for their system Dise look exactly like the silhouette of Alex Kidd. I wish I had taken a screenshot but I didn't want to get anybody's accounts hacked.
More companies should try to tackle making their games using the basis of their other games like Sega did with Alex Kidd in Shinobi. Like how about Mario in a Legend of Zelda type game, or Megaman in a Ghosts and Goblins game, and maybe perhaps NiGHTS in a Panzer Dragoon like game
Oh man, i loved Alex Kid! Really great game! I think i was 7 or 8 year :-) I mostly got to that cage level (i believe the one after the helicopter) and then i died most of the time :-P
"Atari! Atari! You are shooting up super hot shit rocks in an asteroid field, and in Missile Command you defend your shit hot city, if you don't you're shitty..."
I think Sega shouldn't have given up on Alex. Yeah, Sonic is cool, but more of Alex would have been good. I imagine a parallell universe where Sega continued with Alex, and won over Nintendo

Awesome video, I'm from Puerto Rico and the Alex kid Cover we got was the 1 from the US
I had the first master system with Alex Kidd built in and Alex was eating a hamburger in my version also.
Juegazo.
I had a Sega Gamegear and it had about 100 games and out of those 100 or so games Alex Kidd was the only one worth playing and I hold him dear to my heart
Rip Alex Kidd
Thanks I've been waiting for this one!
Why? It's a very bold video lol regardless big thanks for watching
I knew of Alex Kidd but never got to play any of the games. Great video!
+SpaceboyMusic Massive thanks mate, really appreciated
I always thought it was Alex the kid
A lot of people did, they just never read the packaging properly.
That's because of the tune.
Wtf, you're right. It was Alex the Kid now that I think of it.
I'm sure it's because of the theme song too. As kids we would have put crude lyrics to that little melody and in my head it was 'Alex the kid, Alex the kid something something something something-something'. That extra octave is what messed with our small minds!
Nope, Mandela Effect. Lol
Absolute pleasure mate, meant every word. I am so psyched for our collaboration, we just need to figure out a weekend that's good for both of us! :)
18:50 and now he's back like The Bride from Kill Bill.
...Ken-Oh becoming tiny when you've halfway beaten him makes so much sense now.
Ren Hoek: Mari-Oh, You Ediot kid!
I have to say the Shinobi Alex Kidd game is my favorite of the bunch, and since it's so easy it's a great intro into retro games for your friends.
Really solid review! Makes excellent viewing as I bag board and box up my sonic the comics! Alex Kidd in the enchanted castle was my first ever megadrive purchase! Looking to revisit in a retro live stream soon :-)
+GRUSS Newton Sounds good mate :) glad you had fun watching
"A bit of a product of its time, I suppose." The same can be said about Sonic, but for some reason that blue bastard won't die.
Was waiting for the Sega Gaga cameo at the end, nothing slips through your net!
I have never played the Alex Kidd in Shinobi World. It looks pretty good actually!
Excellent video as usual Daniel. Cheers!
I got Rampart, Double Dragon and Desert Strike once when I broke my leg, but nothing for getting ill
Personally i believe this game needs a sequel for the Wii U. It was very underrated. There should be new additions like new power ups, New levels, and a new controls for swimming
thanks for shoutout at the end!
+TheNintendoFreaks Not a problem dude, cheers for the suggestion
I just got a custom pendant of Alex Kidd on his BMX yesterday.... I've always been a Sega person... Lol
unpopolar opinion:
Alex Kidd's in miracle world > Super Mario Bros
>more variety with vehicles and various items, like the block that generates an invincible ghost if you pass over it
>rpg-esque mechanics with money
>the boss that aren't junken are... well, an attempt to a boss
while mario...
>no vehicles, not much variety
>no money nor purpose on collecting money except for lives
>the boss is literally "get past the brigde" repeated till the end
and so on... com on i know it's unpopolar, it's just m,y opinion, but i can't be the only one that thinks it...
I agree with you.
Also Mario has basically the same 3 levels over and over just with differenct colors while Alex goes horizontal, vertical and a lot of variety in its level design.
Amazing especially considering the developers had only 3 months time from concept to final release of the game.
Thank you so much for creating this
I got a chance to play the Mega Drive version in the early 90s and I liked the Master System game better. It just feels and plays right. And the Lovely Music sticks in my mind forever ^^
+daveruda cant denyt that misic, its sooooooo good
High Tech World was the first game I ever played on a Master System and loved it!
It took me 2 decades to figure out what alex was munching on at the end of each level.
The first game is almost great but WHY did they reverse the controls compared to Mario and just about every other platformer ever made? Glad they corrected that in Enchanted Castle.
I like the snail game. You know what built in game you get with the NES? Screen Flash.
He's eating a rice ball? I always thought that was him drinking from a beer tankard! XD
It's was actually built into some model one master systems and that's the one I had as a kid (you can see the console in some of my videos :-D)
Ace stuff mate. Looking forward to more videos :-) All the best and have a great Christmas and New Year :-D
+SoulFunkRetro Have a great xmas and year to you too :) BTW did you comment before i got to the bit where I talk about the game being built in to the master system 1? ;)
+Daniel “Slope's Game Room” Ibbertson Haha...yes I did mate. Just watching the rest now. Had to pop out so only watched half. Apologies for that. That will teach me to comment before watching all the video lol ;-)
Another superb video Dan.
+Andrew Monaghan Thanks buddy as always very much appreciated
I played so much of Alex Kidd in Miracle World back in the day.
You know I've watched a lot of your videos and their Super interesting and well Researched shame you don't do more Capcom games aside from Ghouls and Ghost but honestly these videos should be about game you really care about Keep up the good work and hopefully you get all the game series you'd like to do a Complete History of
+MP2066 I am never gonna run out of complete histories I wanna cover lol plenty more to come mate :D
good cannot wait to watch them I always learn something from your videos
Those side burns are unacceptable.
Alex the kidd in miracle world was built in to my sega master system but some had sonic built in, im glad i got alex the kidd.
Shit, the janken sequences always have the same answers..!? All these years I could have saved so much hassle if I’d figured that out..! 🤬
Great stuff as usual :-)
+Marius Myhre Massive thanks buddy
Update to Alex Kidd Miracle World 2
"Kick you in the miracle balls" "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
5:44 oh no. not again
I would like to see Alex Kidd return! Imagine Alex Kidd done in VR like Astrobots! Do a couple of versions, one in VR and a platformer like Mario 3D world.
Alex Kidd was also built into the master system one.
My god my entire childhood was based around a mega drive/snes counterfeit machine my mom got from a flea market vendor. i played SO many hours of Alex Kid enchanted castle I love it so much
Did you ever finish it? I remember pumping a serious amount of time into the game but never finishing it hahaha
+Daniel “Slope's Game Room” Ibbertson I don't think I ever did either 😂
I find the emphasis on "Alex" over "Kidd" interesting. I've always said it with the emphasis on "Kidd".
I loved this game as a kid. Alex kidd in miracle world was a game I played loads of, badly lol. thanks for the memories :) x
+xriskiex NOT A PROBLEM thanks so much for commenting :)
Alexx the Kidd had no chance against Mario. As a matter of fact, Sega's genius mascot will always be Sonic to me.
"Martin Freeman in the Enchanted Castle" XD
Sadly I agree that Alex Kidd probably wouldn't have a very successful comeback and should really be left to cameos/nostalgia pieces. Sega made soooooo many mistakes with the franchise which I feel have damaged the mascot beyond repair. It hurts to admit, but I still enjoy a few of his games :-)
Excellent video as always!!!
+MyGamerXP Yeah they really did make so many mistakes, cheers for commenting mate
Sidebar - I actually like your opening retro-beats over the Take you for a ride (to Irritation Avenue) x100
This series is coming back in the form of a remake
Thanks for explaining what game I had, The first one.
Id love to see a video like this on the wonderboy series
I think I will defo do the wonderboy series one day :)
Hope so, I only played the 3rd game, but by far my favorite game for the Master System
Fantastic video, love your channel, especially because your vids are from a UK perspective.
If I was rich I'd patreon you.
New sub. Binge watched a lot of you're stuff tonight keep it up mate
Ahhhh that's aweome bud :D I hope you enjoy your stay :D
still enjoying haha
Oh man, i loved Alex Kid! Really great game! I think i was 7 or 8 year :-) I mostly got to that cage level (i believe the one after the helicopter) and then i died most of the time :-P
"Atari! Atari! You are shooting up super hot shit rocks in an asteroid field, and in Missile Command you defend your shit hot city, if you don't you're shitty..."
I loved enchanted castle as a kid but I remember it being hard af
I think Sega shouldn't have given up on Alex. Yeah, Sonic is cool, but more of Alex would have been good. I imagine a parallell universe where Sega continued with Alex, and won over Nintendo
Where would Sonic be then in that timeline?
