The OSR and Me

  • So, I'm a recent convert to the OSR school of games in the D&D family. I like the rules, I like the kinds of drama that come from it, and I like how simple it is and that I don't have to deal with WotC in any way, shape or form.
    Let's talk about it!
Thanks to the people I nicked B-roll from. Sorry I look such a garish colour.

As a fan of many TTRPGs I am in agreement. BFRPG is my favorite of the "old school" systems mostly for the same reasons you mention in this video. The BRP based games were my 2nd love (after D&D) and remain at the top of my preferred system list. (I assume that you have a good idea why that might be based on your comments in this video.)
My experience with the OSR has been mostly positive. The energy, creativity and sharing reminds me of why I love this hobby! I very much like some of the retroclones and innovative reimagining of original systems that are part of the OSR. Less appealing is the curmudgeon element. I will remind viewers that the "grumpy", intolerant perspective is not universal among us older gamers, however. (For example, I started with the '74 box and Chainmail back when that was all there was. I'm old! And Itry very hard not to be "grumpy".) With so much gaming fun to share with others, what's not to like.
    Cheers!

Yeah, Basic is just so great. I'm looking forward to introducing some 5e elements for players soon. I just wanted to start off slow with that stuff.
Personally, though, its the presence of actual threats I really like. The players are understanding that you can't just Feat their way out of every encounter. It's always serious when swords are drawn.

I’ve introduced some new players (as in have never played a TTRPG in their lives) to OSE as their first dnd-like, and they picked it up almost intuitively. I fear that if I tried to get them into 5e, just the character creation would teach them that the important things are the special abilities they get and not the actual play at the table. Lots of simple wisdom imo in the OSR space, so long as you separate the wheat from the grognard chaff

That is a very good point actually. 5e does front load with huge amounts of things early in the game play and I think best practice is warning players 'about 4 sessions in there'll be another huge big choice.'
And yeah, OSR is great. Just, as always, the moaning old man are the loudest. I think my next OSR vid is going to be about how there's much more scope to investigate different sub genres of fantasy.

First, Wickerpunk is magnificent, and I recommend it often. Thank you for the work. To your question, I’ve got two systems for my OSR appetite: ACKS (soon to be ACKS II) and Shadowdark. I’m also a huge fan of Free League’s Forbidden Lands, which I think is OSR in tone though perhaps not in lineage.

Basic Roleplaying is not great for high adventure roleplaying, but if you're doing investigation, exploring, things like that, it's great. If you meant Basic Fantasy, the OSR thing, yeah, I'm all on board.

I like a lot of games, and have never played D&D. My choice of games these days would be Dungeons and Delvers Dice Pool (easy, written for kids in fact, but fixes the main faults I dislike with D&D system), or even free games like Pocket Fantasy (with extra class compendium is best), or Mini-Six Bare Bones (old Star Wars D6 system simplified a bit, and now generic rules, but can still do Star Wars).

Have you really never played D&D? I think you're a very rare breed indeed, my friend. Would you like to or are you happy staying Gold Star pure?

We had a ball as teenagers with d6 Star Wars though. I thought about doing an Exalted hack with it a few years ago but someone's nicked my copies. I also hear good stuff about Pocket Fantasy.
