I enjoy this lyric-spinto tenor voice of Ferruccio Tagliavini even when he sings the art song a whole step lower from the key most tenors sing. I wish there were more tenors that can sing Ideale in G major because it's a great key for those who don't have the A4.
I propose that the United Nations declare F. P. Tosti’s IDEALE as The Anthem of the World, or, The World’s Anthem! Oh that men might seek after The Ideal: Justice, freedom, mercy and peace!
It's a pity that Tagliavini's career wasn't longer. His almost unique ability to slide in and out of falsetto without the slightest break was wonderful. My favorite of his best recordings is of, Recondita Armonia, in 1940. (Available on RUclips)
almost 30 years at the top...not such a short career, and of course he made big headed decisions to sing roles heavier than his gorgeous instrument couls sustain...so, maybe a pity, yes...but my God what glory he left us!
I agree with most of what has been said to date - greatness of Bjorling, Gigli, Pavarotti, but take a listen to the young Giuseppe di Stefano (also on YT) - again I am not a di Stefano fan but this is one of his best recordings
