Hey! Just so you know. No body of us in Sweden calls him Gustavus Adolphus. We just say Gustav den andre Adolf (Gustav II Adolf) and I would say he is the secound most famous of our old Kings. After Gustav Vasa
Oh, you Lion From The North... Oh, you Lion From The North... Mighty eagle, rule alone Liberator claim the throne Lion from the Northern Land Take the scepter from its hand
A time of religion and war, legends tell the tale of a lion This beast in the shape of a man with a dream to rule sea and land Yes I get to know him thanks to Sabaton.
Some fun facts: In 1621, in order to better defend southern Sweden from the Danes, Gustavus Adolphus ordered the construction of a fortress city of the entrance to the Göta river. This fortress town is what is today known as the city of Gothenburg, or Göteborg in swedish (”Göte” being a slightly changed “Göta”, and “borg” being the swedish word for fortress, so the name basically means “fortress of the Göta”) According to legend, Gustavus was looking down toward the wetlands at the river entrance from atop a mountain (which one it was, I’m not quite sure), pointed down toward it and said ”Här är där staden ska ligga!”, which translates to ”This is where the city will be!”. There is a statue depicting this outside the city hall in Gothenburg.
He was only 37 when he died. And he was full of life and passion when he lived. Everyone who got to know him liked him. His German import wife got heartbroken when he died, because she was truely in love with him and his burial took ages to accomplish because she could not accept that he was dead. They took out the King's heart and put it into a golden box which the Queen carried around everywhere. Sweden was mourning the loss of loved great King. And Oxenstierna had lost both a great friend and a great coworker. There was nobody that could replace Gustavus, despite Sweden had the best all star team in Europe of gifted Generals and administrators.
His tactics and writings were also inspiration for the New Model Army of the English Civil War, and as a result, the foundation of the fearsome Redcoat soldier in general. A much underappreciated genius and a worthy subject.
Swedish troops in the Thirty Years' War had mass twice daily (Lutherans retain the mass). In 1600s Estonia was part of the Swedish Kingdom. Gustavus Adolphus founded the University of Dorpat (today called Tartu) in Estonia. Estonians very proud of this university, graced it with a statue of Gustavus. He did a lot, actually.
Gustavus is one of these Renaissance Men who did almost everything they ever set out to, very well. It's amazing what he packed into 37 years, and when he died the died fighting.

Well done mr, I wrote my dissertation on this and for such a long and complicated ordeal these few years were id say this was pretty much on the point. There are many points that could have been made. The problematic situation that came with Wallenstein entering the conflict on the HREs behalf was much mired by the fact that alot of the princes, dukes and what have you, in germany, that had comitted to the cause did other things. Like they realized that their neighbour had sent troops and was thus weakened so before heading to assist Gustaphus they invaded their neighbour and on and on that went. Also the swedish use of cannons was not the only thing that set them apart. They were by far the best drilled close combat army for a good 2 centuries. Alot of armies during the time were mostly peasents or pressganged into service as long as they could shoot. So Gustaphus realized two things. Firstly the distance at which the first volley was fired seldom infered alot of casulties on his well drilled troops. So they marched them close, soaking the first fussilade, and then with fearsome accuracy in return decimated the enemy ranks. Enter the 2nd point. After which they would charge. Men who have little to no training facing swords, pikes and bayonetts simply ran. This was something they used to effect to break much larger armies time and time again all the way up and until the fall of the empire. Also it would have been worth mentioning that after his death the swedish army killed its way all the way into prague. Upon a bridge there a plaque still stands saluting the defenses that kept them from sacking the entire city.

Now the funny thing is, that this Pappenheim dude "second in imperial command" hails from a 4000 people village close to where I live. In Germany there still is a saying "I know my Pappenheimers" indicating their trustworthieness... nobody these days knows that this village truly exists :D
There's a phrase I somehow memorized in my youth. Supposedly when Adolphus was found wounded the soldiers asked who he was. Trying to save him, his young attendant answered that he was a Swedish general. The king raised himself a bit off the ground and said "Ich bin der König in Schweden selbst gewesen", I am the Swedish king himself. So they killed him on the spot.
What, no mention of Gustav Adolf’s major role in the alternate history fiction of Eric Flint, the “1632” series? Where the Battle of Luetzen never happened and Gustav survived?
Here are some suggestions for another video - all interesting people April Ellison/William Ellison Jr. (1790-1861) - a freed slave from South Carolina who became a successful slaveowner and planter himself before the civil war. George Eastman (1854-1932) - American entrepreneur who founded the Eastman Kodak company. He was a pioneer of photography and a major philanthropist. He commit suicide at the age of 77 because of chronic pain from health problems. Emile Zola (1840-1902) - French novelist and journalist who is an early practitioner in the literary genre, naturalism. He was involved in the Dreyfus affair, a political scandal in France. His book was the inspiration behind the film The Wolf of Wall Street starring Leonardo DiCaprio in 2013. Andrew Cunanan (1969-1997) - spree killer responsible for five murders before his suicide via gunshot. His victims include Gianna Versace and Lee Miglin. Lee Miglin (1924-1997) - American business tycoon, real estate developer and philanthropist who was spree killer, Andrew Cunanan’s third murder victim. “The Count of Saint Germain” (1691 or 1712 -died 1784) - European Adventurer who achieved prominence in high society in the 1700’s. His real name is unknown while his background is obscure. He claimed to be the son of Prince Francis II Rakoczi of Transylvania. He was arrested for suspicion of espionage during the Jacobite rebellion but was released without charge. Julia d’Aunigny (1670 or 1673 -died 1707) - 17th century French opera singer who was known for her flamboyant lifestyle. Her father was a secretary to the master of the horse to King Louis XIV. She was a keen sword fighter, cross-dressed and tried to run away with a female lover after killing a man in a duel. She died at the age of 33. Past American presidents, British prime ministers, monarchs and Roman emperors would be good as well.
A surprising aspect of both sides was their inability to fund their armies other than by pillaging, taxing beyond means and essentially standing over cities for 💰 Including those presumably "on their side". That bred resentment and difficulty ruling conquests.

Der Löwe aus Mitternacht kommt! Once more he's here for waaaaaar!
As a Swede, this video pleases me greatly
Do video on Swedish warship Vasa.
Great video, more 16th / 17th century please!
Can you do one on Santa Ana:Mexico's most Infamous Dictator
What, no mention of Gustav Adolf’s major role in the alternate history fiction of Eric Flint, the “1632” series? Where the Battle of Luetzen never happened and Gustav survived?
I just found a new historical hero! Christina! Bravo!!!
She quite literally abandoned her nation.
LIBERA ET IMPERA
AGUSTA PER ANGUSTA
- "We need Luxembourg to store our pickled herring."
- "Why can't you store them in Sweden?"
- "Oh the whiff"
Gets me every time.
I was looking for this comment, thank you!
AKA the guy with the best Sabaton song.
Gustavus Adolphus, libera et imperia!
As soon as heard “Arch Duke Ferdinand” I knew it was going to be a heck of a war.
Do a video on Axel Oxenstierna. You can't understand Gustavus Adolphus' Sweden without one.

Video suggestion: Leo major. The badass Canadian WW2 soldier who captured a german held city all on his own.
A surprising aspect of both sides was their inability to fund their armies other than by pillaging, taxing beyond means and essentially standing over cities for 💰 Including those presumably "on their side". That bred resentment and difficulty ruling conquests.
Good work Simon. I learnt this at A Level back in 1988 and you have hit it on the nose!
FINALLY!!! THANK YOU SIMON

I'm still pushing for a biographic of Haile Selassie.
