The actual term from 1:17 is a basal reader. You know like the McGuffey readers or those Houghton Mifflin Harcourt readers are anthology of stories. This was a good comparison vid. I honestly wouldn't have thought to look at these side by side. I've used the pathway readers over the years. I actually used quite a bit of plain(Anabaptist) curriculum materials. They are inexpensive and thorough. Those are all friends to large families on a budget. I also love living books like the ones Memoria Press use.
Erin Jahi Thanks! Yes, they’re very good. I like how they put on emphasis on character as well. I know I mentioned that in my 4th grade flip through but that really sticks out to me. They’re good moral stories. And the 1st-3rd follows the same kids so that’s also nice.
I think plain publishers know what they’re doing. I am always fascinated reading Rod and Staff’s little tid bits of info they put in their teacher books. They give great teaching tips (total side note).
I just wanted to mention that back when my oldest 2 children did the pathway readers for 1st through 3rd they said it prepared them to do well on their standardized test. We never do any official test prep outside of high school SAT prep. Well the looking through the text for answers to the comprehension questions gave them practice with that style of questioning. We normally just did narration prompt questions during our read alouds. The pathway readers gave them a different type of practice.
I really like your way of combining Pathways and Memoria Press. I watched some of your other videos. A question I have is how do you incorporate Sonlight readers (those readers look really good too!) when you do Language Arts? I really like all three of them, but what would be the practical way of using Sonlight readers with Pathways/Memoria Press literature?
Hi! I haven't done all 3 at the same time. I would do Pathway/MP or Pathway/SL OR do Pathway/MP and use Sonlight as read-aloud OR free reading. Ha. Hope that helps! Wait, one final option would be to do: 1 unit Pathway, 1 MP lit guide, 1 uni Pathway, 1 Sonlight book, 1 unit Pathway and so forth.
Joy Center of Learning combines the Pathway readers with a grammar, punctuation, and writing curriculum called Climbing to Good English. I used the CGE for my daughter's 7th and 8th grade years and it was very thorough. (**I am not affiliated with the Joy enter in any way. I used their CGE about 15 yrs ago for my daughter and now she is using Pathway and the CGE with her kids).

Erin Jahi Yes, I like that too. It definitely can challenge my kids, but in a good way.
We used Prairie primer with the little house books and could do it with all our children combined and they absolutely love the prairie primer
