I think tips are so silly. We don’t tip doctors, someone bagging groceries, mechanics, mailman etc…..but I tip someone doing my hair/nails, a driver, someone bringing me food? Pay servers a livable wage and all other vocations just set the price and let people decide if they want to pay that. I don’t wanna tip my hair dresser because 1. I’m already paying a ridiculous amount 2. I work in healthcare on my feet 12hrs busting my behind serving people too. I do tip where it’s expected but doesn’t mean I like it lol
I’m so sick of tipping, why do I have to tip the pizza guy. When I already have a delivery fee and lord if you order through door dash or Uber eats you’re gonna be charged like $30 before you even pay for the damn food!!
Totally agree! I was saying the same thing for a delivery fee. I order a dang pizza and I’m paying way too much and the pizza ain’t all that. Prices are high and people sometimes can’t leave big tips. But they can afford the cost. The unwritten rule about tips is you should tip. That’s like saying paying for your meal isn’t enough and you have to tip too.
The delivery fee unfortunately doesn't even go to the driver anymore. It used to but now the restaurant keeps it. Not to mention "taxes and fees." It's ridiculous how they treat employees now.
As someone who has worked as a pizza delivery driver the delivery fee doesn't go to the driver, it goes to the store. It always sucked because people thought the delivery fee was a tip, and we'd have to explain that it wasn't. Now when I order pizza I normally go and pick it up to avoid having to pay the delivery fee and a tip (as the drivers normally use their own cars, and have to pay for their own gas, and maintenance on their cars). The only time I order delivery anymore is when the weather is bad, and I make sure to tip the driver well.
@@srichardf delivery used to be awesome when I was a teenager. Like 2005.. $5.25 an hr plus $1 per delivery and people usually tipped $3 average. In Korea, some genius tried to import this tipping system. Consumers made a blacklist of restaurants and the businesses asking for tip. They all lost customers and had to cancel the system and had to pay AT LEAST MINIMUM WAGES to the workers. Korean delivery companies, similar to Grubhub, lost 50% in profit that they had to cancel the tipping system. I think America should follow that step. And you know what? You will get way better service than in America.

@shawnknive i've been told by americans i should tip around $1-$2 per beer because the bartender had to use all there strength and knowledge too....... use a bottle opener 🤣🤣🤣 i can tell you i will never tip at a bar
My husband and I owned a restaurant and we didn't ask our clientele for tips. If tips were left on tables, we collected them all and split them among everyone (waitress, cook, dish washer) at the end of their shifts. Everyone felt more appreciated!
It’s the vague sense of entitlement to the tip that is the most off putting. I’ve been a dishwasher and a waiter. I’ve had plenty waiters relish in bringing in dishes and stacking them up like a house of cards and then going out for smokes. Basically getting to offload responsibility in a way that happens at very few jobs I’d imagine. I think the risk of no tip is sorta what comes with the territory. Not to mention the flexibility schedule wise. Hard to feel sorry for anyone working as a waiter really. It’s not the only entry level no skills required job opportunity. But it is the easiest one to get some fast cash that night tax free. 🎉
I tried waitressing once. I moved from being a cashier to a waitress. I hated it. It is not an easy job. I ended up going back to the cash register. People can be total jerks when it comes to food.
@olgrubbybastard Sounds like you just couldn't cut it as a waiter? Dishwashing positions are how any decent restaurants get their waitstaff. That's a job you get as a total newbie to the industry, not waiting. AND waiters/bartenders get taxed on their SALES at the end of the night so cash tips aren't easy, tax free, fast cash. When they get stiffed, the IRS still takes it's cut, as does any other tipped position in the restaurant! Anyone worth their spit in the industry knows that!
@@ThoughtsFew It's reeaal magical, a place where everything's gluten-free and people can make a living wage only working 40 hrs/wk. A place that the staff tips the customers, becauses it's so easy and pays so well!
I pressed 3% tip instead of 5% tip at a store called Tropical Smoothie, the screen beeped and said bad tip, personally I don’t mind tipping whenever it comes up asked bc I work at a fast food restraunt and I get it know it angers a lot of people, but I will never tip at Tropical Amoothie again for there outrageous tipping
The girl who is a waitress is giving more excuses to the restaurant industry, yeq it's the norm BUT IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE. the guy with the black jacket is 💯
Yes tipping has gone too far. The lady thinks she deserves tips but l doubt her and many other servers split their tips with the cooks and dishwashers. Basic job description of a server is take order, serve order, refill water and occasionally bring extra napkins or something. So why do they think they deserve a tip for doing the minimal of their job description? Because they have to deal with difficult people sometimes? Well then ask them for tips instead of the pleasant customers who ask for nothing out of your basic duties. If anything these restraunt workers should be tipping the pleasant customers for giving them a pleasurable work experience.
When is this show going to be about families/people in crisis? It has been soooooo bad this season. Internet, culture, politics is all they do now. it’s all so very very bad
that I agree i hate that tip option on frozen yogurt places.. like hello???? i made it myself lolz. but i still give like 10% bc i think ringing out my diy order correctly and charging me the right price does require manual labor. i guesss lmao
I do wonder if people in the US realise that they are the only country in the whole world that has this kind of tipping culture, sure we have tips elsewhere but they are lower 12.5% - 15% is normal, it is usually included by way of the service charge (often paid to all the workers not just front of house) and is more limited for example its not that common to tip a bar tender.
When was the last time a waiter tipped their Mechanic, Plumber, Electrician, Doctor, lawyer, ? Are we not providing a service as well ? It's a double standard if you don't tip everyone.
I see a tip as a gift for good service and not forced but as an incentive. another argument is what if someone tips when they don't have to just to be "nice" and it make syou uncomfortable if you Don't when you leave
Tips are very American because they do not care about paying people normal wages. In most other countries those things are not mandatory because they are included. I tip because I want to give extra. In America it's tipping because you need to pay for normal things an employee does. People think the system is wrong and blame everybody for not correcting the system. Where are the employers who put up a sign "You do not have to tip, we pay our employees normal wages". That would be a healthy start. Why are Americans not doing that?
I think that’s what us Americans are arguing about. Waiters argue against it tho because depending on where they work, what shift it is, on a certain day and how busy it can be, they can make big bucks just on tips. So they can often control how much they make depending on when they’re willing to work.
@@MichelleLyn84 But then it becomes a whole game. You earn terribly working these hours, nobody wants to work those hours. And get paid on different hours, because of tips. Everybody trying to work for tips on the hours which get more tips. Instead of just getting payment. Meanwhile other people are just getting payment any hour for doing a job. I work as a software developer. I get payment every month, whatever hours. But if I want payment per hour I become independent and I can earn a lot of money any hour. I wouldn't be going for tips.
@@MichelleLyn84 But doesn't this just create a situation just to order home and not even go there? And then just order online as small amount as possible for the cheapest delivery. At some point there is no fun anymore in going to a restaurant.
@@MichelleLyn84 Even weirder. The hairdresser expects a tip. Oh please. You are already paid, you are not special to expect it. Where do people do that? I give a tip because I feel like it, not because you can't feed your cat or keep your home. The meaning of a tip is gone at that moment. Tip is only meant to be to give something EXTRA, not that I need to decide someone can feed a baby.
Because nothing is stable in America. Our system is so close to another collapse. The rich keep getting richer while the poor stay poor and are treated like they deserve to be poor. Unfortunately now they can't blame it on not going to college anymore.
I was a server and bartender for 3 years. What people don’t realize is we have a tip share to tip out the host, busser, and bartender. The tip out is a percentage of our sales for the night, not our tips received. If we don’t get tipped on a meal, we would literally lose money on that table since we still have to tip out the other employees based off the sales for the table that stiffed us. Doubt this occurs at all restaurants, but I’m sure this is a large majority
This was not always the case. Back when I worked in service, the staff was paid regular wages and the wait staff kept ALL the tips. Nowadays its a way for the business owner to make more profits and stiff the people that do all the work.
Definitely still does💯!!! We have to tip out pay 6% of total sales while making $2.13hr... ($6 out of pocket for every $100 a guest orders)... Amazing guest definitely make it worth while because they see how hard you're working to give them a great experience!!! It just hurts when you get the ppl who run you back & forth purposely when they know they aren't going to tip (which means as the server you pay out of pocket for this too)
@Liam Miller you seem to be a ray of sunshine. if i know im gonna be serving you im gonna randomly force you to pay the meal right after you order it and bring it to you whenever i feel like because you arent tipping me anyways you A-hole
If you own the business, I shouldn't have to tip you. Also... If you're a restaurant, stop putting the tip amount on tax. Tax is not a service provided to me. I will refigure and tip the appropriate amount.
dont forget to tip the server who made your drinks and took your order and served you the food. i know its so hard to spend $10 more when the bill is $50. i know it will kill you. so do it because i want it to hurt you. or else ima embrass you by yelling out your tip to customers. i always grab the check book before the guest leaves. why should i be shy.
When you are asked to tip before your order is ready, tip. You don't know how your order will be treated without tipping. The food preparer can see you didn't tip.
He's right about the labor overhead for the rest of the non tipped help. As servers, we are often required to pay a "tip-out" to the host, the bar back, and bussers based on a percentage of our sales. Regardless of what tips we have actually made. As a result, I have personally LOST money on a really bad shift. This isn't the norm, but if tips are low and sales are high - we do lose a good chunk of our tips still. Depending on where you work of course.
I dont tip servers at all, i came to eat food, i just wanna order my food, eat, pay and leave, i dun need to have a full convo with the server or make friends, im just nice and friendly, if she takes my order correctly and brings my food, i always thank them, i eat and then i pay, thank them again and leave. Like if they did bad service people wouldnt even go there... I tip my full time techs like nail tech, cuz she spends hours making my nails look pretty and the way i like them... Guess everyone sees it differently, i see tht its the restorants job to provide the amount tht would suit my needs I worked in a restorant for 3years, i knew the most about the stuff there and i very rarely got tipped for my good service... and i even did outside of actual work decisions tht werent even on the menu to those customers and they still didnt appreciate it for me to get a financial thank u for tht
Wait staff gets paid less than minimum wage or they used to anyway. Back in the day it was only $2.15/hr or something like that. Where the rest of the staff get a hourly wage that is at least minimum wage. It is ridiculous to expect a tip for getting some jam for someone. That doesn't happen in my area though. Maybe that's an LA thing?
@Michelle Morgan Interesting. I would like to see the whole episode & see how the wait staff would feel about that. Because wait staff can make good money if they are good at their job & work in a higher dollar place. On the slow days it stinks but on a busy day it's great. I've seen excellent wait staff make fantastic money when cashing out their credit tips when i was a cashier. But also, the consumer would pay one way or the other. It would factor into the price of the meal. It's like when you go to a place now with a large party and they automatically make you pay 18% gratuity if you read the bottom of the ticket because they don't want people to work the server to death and leave a penny.
They’re paid per hour dumbass. They have a salary! Servers however do not. They’re paid $2 an hour and that gets taken away from taxes. Servers rely on tips AND on top of that, we have to share our tips with tip share. Educate yourself
I'm not tipping unless I sit down to eat a meal and get table service for the "normal" situation. However, if I get a fantastic hair cut or above and beyond service of some sort I MIGHT. Certainly not tipping to pick up a food order.
That dude needs to chill TF out. Waitresses /waiters are typically not paid minimum wage (I was paid 2.65 an hour and taxed). The dishwasher cooks etc are all paid at least minimum wage and don’t have all the side work, bussing etc to do on top of taking care of tables.
The point is that they should get paid by the employer. Years ago, I worked in that industry. The cooks and cleanup staff were paid at least minimum wage. The wait staff kept all the tips. When did that change??
I can't stand servers these days they're too entitled thinking they do so much service, at the end I rather tip the cooks and the back house that actually did the work while you brought a few plates and a drink. Honestly most servers wouldn't want a wage a because get real you're on worth 12-15 hr at most you a entry job which means you don't need no skills to do so
the problem is not the workers, the problem is the restaurant not paying their workers a living wages they paid their workers sub minimum wages and tip should be distributed equally among workers
Servers get paid less than all other positions hourly. It’s not the employees fault the employer doesn’t compensate at a fair rate. This is America and tipping is standard here and employees don’t get paid fairly so companies rely on out of pocket tips from customers so the employer doesn’t have to pay. If you really won’t tip then don’t go out lol that’s how the servers make money. Just boycott the service industry.
I'm a full-time Door Dash driver. I rely on tips to survive and help my mom out as well. It's so dangerous driving out there late at night these days, delivering non-essential goods to people who can afford the luxury of anything delivered. I spend money on my car, gas, insurance and my time and safety, the least a customer can do is throw me a few bucks as a tip. I wait in long lines and burn gasoline and Door Dash pays me $2.50 or $2.00 per delivery and some deliveries can take 30-40-50 minutes and a third of a gallon of gasoline for $2.50. I survive on gratuities.
And DD needs to raise the base pay!! Too often uninformed customers believe that DD hands over all of the delivery fees to the drivers.. NOT AT ALL!! DD lies to everyone, customers, merchants and esp, drivers. Tips are the main payment to drivers and DD doesn't even show the drivers the full amount in most cases but always in large tips. Who would drive 30 minutes/12 miles away from a city, into the mountains after going into a Safeway and waiting in line to deliver a bottle of tequila at 1am for $4??
So go get new job bro don’t rely i tips I used to push wheels chairs never cared if i didn’t care a tip treated everybody the same because I knew this was not my career and found my career
I 💯 believe a tip should be earned!!! I also think as soon as a person sits down at the table they should Tell the server they have no intention on tipping them for their service too but these ppl NEVER do
Why should you need to tell the waiter you are not gonna tip? If your service Will change because of that then you have no right to be at the service industry. If you want a tip then give good service and if im being asked to tip beforehand i say no and answer that i Will do that afterwards when the service is to my liking and then i give them a tip to an ammount that i want to tip and not what they want me to tip
I feel that the entire tipping culture is terrible. At the same time, I feel that servers should be paid for their work. I propose that buyers and servers all agree to a cut-off date in the not-too-distant future when all buyers will refuse to tip anything at all and all servers will refuse to work at all unless employers pay them the fair market price for their work. This way, from one minute to the next, we can rid ourselves of the whole rotten tipping culture, and everyone will know what they will pay before ordering and be secure in the knowledge that they will not be pressured to pay more after ordering.
The food service industry is so fuked up its laughable. Waitress get a base pay from their employer. They also "rely" on tips. Same goes for the bus boy. He gets base pay, and he relies on the servers tips. Usually all the servers will pay him directly. All while the boss only fully pays the cooks and dishwasher, and hostess. Usually the hostess plays role as front manager. And usually that hostess is the owners relative or wife
Instead of asking d for tips why not just put the price you want to charge so the person can decide to patronize or not instead being blindsided at the end
It went too far when it wasn't complimentary to get a tip anymore. Employers that can't afford to pay their employers an hourly wage should not be trying to run a business.
I don’t tip because it doesn’t feel appreciated, it feels expected. I would love to leave a 15% tip but I am met with disgust because it was not 20%. I will opt out of tipping. I hate giving my hair dressers $20 but they are disrespectful for leaving %15 tip. 20$ is alot of money. I know my hair bill was $160, but why should I leave 20%?????

In the uk unless you are going to a specialist restaurant alot of people don't tip. When i go over to American i will never tip someone for good service..... good service should be expected, lets get real you work in customer service. If you exceed my expectation then yes i will tip but never more then 10% because its a reward for your effort, ive paid my bill already and to ask for 20-30% is delusional. And for all of you saying "WELL IF YOU CANT AFFORD TO TIP YOU CANT AFFORD TO EAT OUT, GO COOK FOR YOURSELF" 🤡...... if i can afford to fly across the atlantic ocean over to the us im pretty sure i can afford to eat out 😂😂.
When it comes to servers we should be tipped 20 percent . We pay out 4 percent for food runners hosting and bussing. We get paid 2.13 per hour and owe taxes of 1700.00 per year!
i have no shame in chasing my guests out the door and asking them why they can't afford to tip me 20% on 200. i do not care. i make 2 dollars an hour without tips. work on night as a server and you understand why tipping should be mandatory. ofcourse i dont like im being under paid. i much rather the system be comission based off of sales and make 15% commison on everything a server sells to a customer. that would make more sense but restaurant owners with tip involved still face a staggering 5-10% profit margin. Just tip me you gah damn cheapskates if you dont have to tip then your bill will already be like 25% more expensive because servers tip out bussers, food runners, hostesses, bartenders.
Lol if you need to demand tips then you shouldnt be working in the service industry because if you believe people Will actually tip you if you chase them and demand free money to compensate the salary that your employer is refusing to pay you will mostly get a big fu to the face. Its just dumb that america makes something that is supposed to be an act of gratitude, basically a mandatory payment so the waiters have a chance to have a normal salary. Its pathetic. Now dont get me wrong. When i go to a restaurant i do tip as well, but i tip the ammount that I want to tip and not the ammount you want me to tip. I dont care about any percentages or guildtripping stories about how low your salary is. Thats not my problem. But i guess its a culture difference because over here in europe we have an actual normal service industry where the waiters and drivers are normally paid and a tip is usually small and an actual sign of gratitude. So until america starts to realize their own failing system and the people in the service industry start to stand up against their employers and demand higher salaries that country Will always be seen as a joke towards the rest of the world.
The profit range in a restaurant is very little for the owner...it costs thousands of dollars a week just for product and staff wage and gas and electricity....so to say your employer should pay you more is like saying your boss shouldn't make any money
Then a company should not exist. Expecting people to pay extra for nothing because they need to tip vs an employer just paying the same amount doesn't make a difference. Except if tips are put on different tax level and nobody declares them. That would be tax fraud.
This isn't remotely true. A well run restaurant will have very high profit margins. The employees of course see nothing of it. They employers are the actual bad guy in this tipping debate.
The answer to the woman’s question about “should I not get my hair done because I don’t have enough for a tip” is YES!! It’s absolutely rude. I always tell people as a server in college. “If you don’t have enough money to tip when you go out DONT GO OUT!”
The money to support any worker should come from thier job that the customer already supports by paying the required price for the service, if you don't like your wage take it up with the greedy boss who clearly makes enough money to run a business.
@@coffeelover0876 but it’s the same as saying I am going to tip my hairdresser $20, vs paying extra $20 for a haircut regardless of whether you like it or not. My husband and I owned a restaurant and we didn't ask our clientele for tips. If tips were left on tables, we collected them all and split them among everyone (waitress, cook, dish washer) at the end of their shifts. Everyone felt more appreciated!
Walter is 110 percent correct!
But as a dishwasher you are paid more hourly than a server.

Tipping should not be mandatory or laid on the customers. It has gone too far. Everybody wants a tip for something...

Tipping Is stuipet in America
Wow, this is a great reason to unionize, right guys? Otherwise why would anyone pay waiters a real wage!
Excellent idea! Unions would set standards, advocate for and protect them.
starbucks workers tried but faced union busting all the time
When was the last time a waiter tipped their Mechanic, Plumber, Electrician, Doctor, lawyer, ?

It is ridiculous to expect a tip for getting some jam for someone. That doesn't happen in my area though. Maybe that's an LA thing?
That’s why they’re saying pay waiters a fair wage and stop relying on the consumers to cover their pay
They don't want that because shaming ppl to tip works out more than minimum wage

Servers get paid less than all other positions hourly. It’s not the employees fault the employer doesn’t compensate at a fair rate.

When it comes to servers we should be tipped 20 percent . We pay out 4 percent for food runners hosting and bussing. We get paid 2.13 per hour and owe taxes of 1700.00 per year!
right? but those other people do not get it.
they think serving isnt even a real job lol.
i have no shame in chasing my guests out the door and asking them why they can't afford to tip me 20% on 200. i do not care. i make 2 dollars an hour without tips. work on night as a server and you understand why tipping should be mandatory. ofcourse i dont like im being under paid. i much rather the system be comission based off of sales and make 15% commison on everything a server sells to a customer. that would make more sense but restaurant owners with tip involved still face a staggering 5-10% profit margin.

They employers are the actual bad guy in this tipping debate.
so you they just want to exploit their worker with non living wages and put the burden to the relation between workers and customers?
The answer to the woman’s question about “should I not get my hair done because I don’t have enough for a tip” is YES!! It’s absolutely rude. I always tell people as a server in college. “If you don’t have enough money to tip when you go out DONT GO OUT!”
The money to support any worker should come from thier job that the customer already supports by paying the required price for the service, if you don't like your wage take it up with the greedy boss who clearly makes enough money to run a business.
